Deuteronomio 33

1 Or questa è la benedizione con la quale Mosè, uomo di Dio, benedisse i figliuoli d’Israele, prima di morire.

2 Disse dunque: "L’Eterno è venuto dal Sinai, e s’è levato su loro da Seir; ha fatto splendere la sua luce dal monte di Paran, è giunto dal mezzo delle sante miriadi; dalla sua destra usciva per essi il fuoco della legge.

3 Certo, l’Eterno ama i popoli; ma i suoi santi son tutti agli ordini suoi. Ed essi si tennero ai tuoi piedi, e raccolsero le tue parole.

4 Mosè ci ha dato una legge, eredità della raunanza di Giacobbe;

5 ed egli è stato re in Ieshurun, quando s’adunavano i capi del popolo e tutte assieme le tribù d’Israele.

6 Viva Ruben! ch’egli non muoia; ma siano gli uomini suoi ridotti a pochi!"

7 E questo è per Giuda. Egli disse: Ascolta, o Eterno, la voce di Giuda, e riconducilo al suo popolo. Con tutte le sue forze egli lotta per esso; tu gli sarai d’aiuto contro i suoi nemici!"

8 Poi disse di Levi: "I tuoi Thummim e i tuoi Urim appartengono all’uomo pio che ti sei scelto, che tu provasti a Massa, e col quale contendesti alle acque di Meriba.

9 Egli dice di suo padre e di sua madre: "Io non li ho visti!" non riconosce i suoi fratelli, e nulla sa de’ propri figliuoli; perché i Leviti osservano la tua parola e sono i custodi del tuo patto.

10 Essi insegnano i tuoi statuti a Giacobbe e la tua legge a Israele; metton l’incenso sotto le tue nari, e l’olocausto sopra il tuo altare.

11 O Eterno, benedici la sua forza, e gradisci l’opera delle sue mani. Trafiggi le reni a quelli che insorgono contro di lui, che gli sono nemici, sì che non possan risorgere.

12 Di Beniamino disse: "L’amato dell’Eterno abiterà sicuro presso di lui. L’Eterno gli farà riparo del continuo, e abiterà fra le colline di lui".

13 Poi disse di Giuseppe: "Il suo paese sarà benedetto dall’Eterno coi doni più preziosi del cielo, con la rugiada, con le acque dell’abisso che giace in basso,

14 coi frutti più preziosi che il sole matura, con le cose più squisite che ogni luna arreca,

15 coi migliori prodotti de’ monti antichi, coi doni più preziosi de’ colli eterni, coi doni più preziosi della terra e di quanto essa racchiude.

16 Il favor di colui che stava nel pruno venga sul capo di Giuseppe, sulla fronte di colui ch’è principe tra i suoi fratelli!

17 Del suo toro primogenito egli ha la maestà; le sue corna son corna di bufalo. Con esse darà di cozzo ne’ popoli tutti quanti assieme, fino alle estremità della terra. Tali sono le miriadi d’Efraim, tali sono le migliaia di Manasse".

18 Poi disse di Zabulon: "Rallegrati, o Zabulon, nel tuo uscire, e tu, Issacar, nelle tue tende!

19 Essi chiameranno i popoli al monte, e quivi offriranno sacrifizi di giustizia; poich’essi succhieranno la dovizia del mare e i tesori nascosti nella rena".

20 Poi disse di Gad: "Benedetto colui che mette Gad al largo! Egli sta nella sua dimora come una leonessa, e sbrana braccio e cranio.

21 Ei s’è scelto le primizie del paese, poiché quivi è la parte riserbata al condottiero, ed egli v’è giunto alla testa del popolo, ha compiuto la giustizia dell’Eterno e i suoi decreti, insieme ad Israele".

22 Poi disse di Dan: "Dan è un leoncello, che balza da Bashan".

23 Poi disse di Neftali: "O Neftali, sazio di favori e ricolmo di benedizioni dell’Eterno, prendi possesso dell’occidente e del mezzodì!"

24 Poi disse di Ascer: "Benedetto sia Ascer tra i figliuoli d’Israele! Sia il favorito de’ suoi fratelli, e tuffi il suo piè nell’olio!

25 Sian le sue sbarre di ferro e di rame, e duri quanto i tuoi giorni la tua quiete!

26 O Ieshurun, nessuno è pari a Dio che, sul carro dei cieli, corre in tuo aiuto, che, nella sua maestà, s’avanza sulle nubi:

27 l’Iddio che ab antico è il tuo rifugio; e sotto a te stanno le braccia eterne. Egli scaccia d’innanzi a te il nemico, e ti dice: "Distruggi!"

28 Israele starà sicuro nella sua dimora; la sorgente di Giacobbe sgorgherà solitaria in un paese di frumento e di mosto, e dove il cielo stilla la rugiada.

29 Te felice, o Israele! Chi è pari a te, un popolo salvato dall’Eterno, ch’è lo scudo che ti protegge, e la spada che ti fa trionfare? I tuoi nemici verranno a blandirti, e tu calpesterai le loro alture".

9420. 'And Moses went up into the mountain of God' means in the direction of heaven. This is clear from the meaning of Mount Sinai, to which 'the mountain of God' refers here, as the law or Divine Truth which comes from the Lord, thus the Word as it exists in heaven, and therefore also heaven itself, dealt with in 8399, 8753, 8793, 8805. The reason why the revelation took place on a mountain and why that mountain is called 'the mountain of God' is that 'the mountain' means the heavenly attribute of love, which is good, and consequently means heaven, and in the highest sense the Lord, 795, 796, 2722, 4210, 6435, 8327, and 'the mountain of God' means Divine Truth springing from the Divine Good of the Lord's Divine Love, 8758. For the Lord is called 'God' in the Word by virtue of Divine Truth, and 'Jehovah' by virtue of Divine Good, 2769, 2807, 2822, 3921(end), 4295, 4402, 7010, 7268, 8192, 8301, 8988, 9167. This is why the words the mountain of God are used.

[2] The fact that 'Mount Sinai' means the law or Divine Truth emanating from the Lord's Divine Good, and so means the Word, and in the highest sense the Lord, is clear in David,

The earth trembled, the heavens also dropped [rain] before God. This Sinai [trembled] before God, the God of Israel. The chariots of God are myriad on myriad, 1 thousands of peacemakers; the Lord is within them, Sinai is within the sanctuary. Psalms 68:8, 17.

'The earth' and 'the heavens' are the external and the internal dimensions of the Church, see 1733, 2117, 2118 (end), 3355, 4535, and 'a chariot' is doctrinal teachings, 2760, 5321, 8146, 8148, 8215, so that 'the chariots of God' are matters of doctrine or God's truths as they exist in heaven. From all this it is evident that 'this Sinai before God, the God of Israel' and 'Sinai within the sanctuary' mean the law or Divine Truth emanating from the Lord's Divine Good, and in the highest sense the Lord in heaven. In the Book of Judges,

O Jehovah, when You went forth from Seir, when You set out from the field of Edom, the earth trembled, the heavens also dropped, the clouds indeed dropped water, the mountains flowed down before Jehovah, this Sinai before Jehovah. Judges 5:4-5.

'This Sinai' again stands for Divine Truth emanating from the Lord's Divine Good. Similarly in Moses,

Jehovah came from Sinai, and dawned from Seir upon them; He shone from Mount Paran, and came out of myriads of holiness. From His right hand came a fiery law for them. Deuteronomy 33:2.

3355. In the internal sense 'an earthquake' is an alteration of the state of the Church. This is clear from the meaning of 'the earth' as the Church, dealt with in 566, 662, 1066, 1068, 1262, 1733, 1850, 2117, 2118, 2928, and from the meaning of 'a quake' as an alteration of state, here an alteration as regards the things that constitute the Church, namely good and truth. This is also evident from other places in the Word, as in Isaiah,

It will happen, that he who is fleeing from the sound of the terror will fall into the pit, and he who is climbing out of the middle of the pit will be caught in the snare, for the floodgates from on high have been opened and the foundations of the earth have been made to tremble, the earth has been utterly shattered. The earth has been made to quake thoroughly, the earth staggers like a drunken man, it sways to and fro like a hut, and heavy upon it is its transgression, and it will fall and not rise again. And it will be on that day, that Jehovah will visit the host of the height on high and the kings of the ground on the ground. Isaiah 24:18-21.

Here it is quite evident that 'the earth' is the Church, for the subject is a Church whose 'foundations' are said to 'have been made to tremble', while the Church itself, having been 'shattered' and 'made to quake', 'staggers' and 'sways to and fro' when good and truth are not known any longer. 'The kings of the ground' are truths, in this case falsities, upon which visitation will take place. As regards 'kings' meaning truths and in the contrary sense falsities, see 1672, 2015, and as regards 'the ground' being similar in meaning to 'the earth', namely the Church, though there is a difference, see 566, 1068.

[2] In the same prophet,

I will make a man (homo) more rare than pure gold, and a man (homo) than the gold of Ophir. Therefore I will make heaven quake and the earth will quake out of its place, at the wrath of Jehovah Zebaoth and in the day of His fierce anger. Isaiah 13:12-13.

Here also, the subject being Judgement Day, 'the earth' plainly stands for the Church which is said to 'quake out of its place' when it undergoes a change of state - 'place' meaning state, see 1273-1275, 1377, 2625, 2837. In the same prophet,

Is this the man who, making the earth quake, making the kingdoms quake, makes the world into a wilderness and destroys its cities? Isaiah 14:16-17.

This refers to Lucifer. 'The earth' stands for the Church, which is said 'to quake' when it lays claim to all things as its own. For 'kingdoms' means the truths accepted by the Church, see 1672, 2547.

[3] In Ezekiel,

It will be on that day, that Gog will come over the land of Israel. My wrath will come up in My anger and in My zeal. In the fire of My wrath I will say, Surely on that day there will be a great earthquake on Israel's ground. Ezekiel 38:18-20.

'Gog' stands for external worship that has been separated from internal and so made idolatrous, 1151. 'Israel's land' or 'ground' stands for the spiritual Church, 'an earthquake' for an alteration of its state. In Joel,

The earth quaked before Him, the heavens trembled. The sun and the moon were darkened, and the stars withdrew their shining. Joel 2:10.

This also refers to Judgement Day. 'The earth quaked' stands for an altered state of the Church, 'the sun and moon' for the good of love and the truth of faith, 1529, 1530, 2441, 2495, which are said to be 'darkened' when goods and truths are not acknowledged any longer. 'The stars' stands for cognitions of good and truth, 2495, 2849. In David,

The earth trembled and quaked, and the foundations of the mountains shook and trembled because He was angered. Psalms 18:6-7.

'The earth trembled and quaked' stands for the Church when its state has become perverted.

[4] In John,

When he opened the sixth seal I looked again, and behold, a great earthquake took place, and the sun became black as sackcloth made of hair, and the full moon became like blood, and the stars in the sky fell to the earth. Revelation 6:12-13.

Here 'an earthquake', 'the sun', 'the moon', and 'the stars' have a similar meaning to that which they have above in Joel. In the same book,

At that hour a great earthquake took place, and a tenth part of the city fell, and there were killed in the earthquake seven thousand people. 1 Revelation 11:13.

From all these places it is evident that 'an earthquake' means nothing other than an alteration of the state of the Church, and that 'the earth' has no other meaning in the internal sense than the Church. And since 'the earth' is the Church it is clear that 'the new heaven and the new earth' which are to take the place of the previous heaven and earth, Isaiah 65:17; 66:22; Revelation 21:1, means nothing other than a new Church, internal and external, 1733, 1850, 2117, 2118 (end).
