1946. Et tu appelleras son nom Ismaël signifie l'état de la vie : Anciennement on donnait aux fils et aux filles des noms qui signifiaient l'état dans lequel avaient été les parents, et surtout les mères, quand elles les avaient conçus, ou pendant qu'elles étaient enceintes, ou au moment de l'accouchement, ou bien l'état dans lequel les enfants s'étaient trouvés en naissant : ainsi les noms étaient significatifs : ici est expliqué d'où Ismaël a tiré son nom, savoir : parce que Jéhovah a entendu l'affliction, ce qui était l'état de sa mère ; dans le Verset suivant est décrit ce que représente Ismaël.

Now when they had departed, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream, saying, "Arise and take the young child and his mother, and flee into Egypt, and stay there until I tell you, for Herod will seek the young child to destroy him."
