Oseas 5

Study

   

1 Sacerdotes, oíd esto, y estad atentos, Casa de Israel; y Casa del Rey, escuchad: porque para vosotros es el juicio, pues habéis sido lazo en Mizpa, y red extendida sobre Tabor.

2 Y matando sacrificios han bajado hasta lo profundo; por tanto, yo seré la corrección de todos ellos.

3 Yo conozco a Efraín, e Israel no me es desconocido; porque ahora, oh Efraín, has fornicado, y se ha contaminado Israel.

4 No pondrán sus pensamientos en volverse a su Dios, porque espíritu de fornicación está en medio de ellos, y no conocen al SEÑOR.

5 Y la soberbia de Israel le desmentirá en su cara; e Israel y Efraín tropezarán en su pecado; tropezará también Judá con ellos.

6 Con sus ovejas y con sus vacas andarán buscando al SEÑOR, y no le hallarán; se apartó de ellos.

7 Contra el SEÑOR se rebelaron, porque engendraron hijos extraños; ahora los devorará un mes con sus heredades.

8 Tocad el shofar en Gabaa, trompeta en Ramá; sonad tambor en Bet-avén; tras ti, oh Benjamín.

9 Efraín será asolado el día del castigo; en las tribus de Israel hice conocer mi verdad.

10 Los príncipes de Judá fueron como los que traspasan mojones; derramaré sobre ellos como agua mi ira.

11 Efraín es vejado, quebrantado en juicio, porque quiso andar en pos de mandamientos.

12 Yo, pues, seré como polilla a Efraín, y como carcoma a la Casa de Judá.

13 Y verá Efraín su enfermedad, y Judá su llaga: irá entonces Efraín al Assur, y enviará al rey de Jareb; mas él no os podrá sanar, ni os curará la llaga.

14 Porque yo seré como león a Efraín, y como cachorro de león a la Casa de Judá; yo, yo arrebataré, y andaré; tomaré, y no habrá quien escape.

15 Andaré, y tornaré a mi lugar, hasta que conozcan su pecado, y busquen mi rostro. En su angustia madrugarán a mí.

47. 1. “Spirit” refers to an individual’s life. This is clear from the fact that we commonly speak of “yielding up the spirit” when someone dies. In this sense, then, “spirit” means the life of our breathing. In fact, the word “spirit” is derived from [a word for] breathing, which is why in Hebrew the word that means “spirit” also means “wind.”

We have two inner springs of life. One is the motion of the heart, and the other is the breathing of the lungs. The life that depends on the breathing of the lungs is the one properly meant by “spirit” and also by “soul.” In the appropriate place there will be a description of the way this is coordinated with our cognitive thinking, while the life dependent on the motion of the heart is coordinated with the love associated with our will.

It is clear from the following passages that “spirit” in the Word refers to an individual’s life.

You gather in their spirit; they breathe their last and return to dust. (Psalms 104:29)

He remembered that they were flesh, a spirit that departs and does not return. (Psalms 78:39)

When their spirit leaves, they will return to the earth. (Psalms 146:4)

Hezekiah expressed grief that “the life of his spirit” was departing. (Isaiah 38:16)

The spirit of Jacob came back to life. (Genesis 45:27)

A molded image is a lie, and there is no spirit within it. (Jeremiah 51:17)

The Lord Jehovih said to the dry bones, “I will put spirit into you so that you will live. Come from the four winds, O spirit, and breathe on these people who have been killed, and they will live”; and the spirit came into them, and they came back to life. (Ezekiel 37:5-6, 9-10)

When Jesus took the daughter’s hand, her spirit returned, and she arose immediately. (Luke 8:54-55)

11 Make sharp the arrows; hold firm the shields: Yahweh has stirred up the spirit of the kings of the Medes; because his purpose is against Babylon, to destroy it: for it is the vengeance of Yahweh, the vengeance of his temple.
