Jeremijas 51

Study

   

1 Taip sako Viešpats: “Aš pažadinsiu prieš Babilono ir Chaldėjos gyventojus naikinantį vėją.

2 Aš siųsiu į Babiloną vėtytojus. Jie vėtys jį ir ištuštins šalį. Ji bus apsupta iš visų pusių.

3 Šauliai, įtempkite lankus, šarvuotieji, pakilkite. Nesigailėkite jos jaunuolių ir sunaikinkite visą jos kariuomenę.

4 Žuvusieji ir sunkiai sužeisti chaldėjų krašte gulės gatvėse.

5 Izraelio ir Judo neatstūmė Viešpats, jų Dievas, nors jų kraštas yra pilnas nusikaltimų prieš Izraelio Šventąjį.

6 Bėkite iš Babilono, gelbėkitės, nežūkite dėl jo nusikaltimų. Tai Viešpaties keršto diena, ir Jis atlygins jam už jo darbus.

7 Babilonas buvo auksinė taurė Viešpaties rankoje, visa žemė pasigėrė iš jos. Jos vyno gėrė tautos, todėl jos išprotėjo.

8 Babilonas krito, jis sutriuškintas. Apraudokite jį, atneškite balzamo jo žaizdoms, gal jis pagis?”

9 Mes gydėme Babiloną, bet jis nepagijo. Palikime jį ir grįžkime kiekvienas į savo kraštą. Jo teismas pasiekė dangų.

10 Viešpats iškėlė mūsų teisumą. Eikime ir pasakokime Sione, ką Viešpats, mūsų Dievas, padarė.

11 Galąskite strėles, imkite skydus! Viešpats sukėlė medų karalius, nes Jo sumanymas yra sunaikinti Babiloną. Tai Viešpaties kerštas dėl šventyklos.

12 Iškelkite vėliavą prieš Babilono sienas, sustiprinkite sargybą, paruoškite pasalas. Ką Viešpats nusprendė, tai ir padarys Babilono gyventojams.

13 Tu, kuris gyveni prie gausių vandenų ir turi gausybę turtų. Atėjo tavo galas, tavo godumo saikas.

14 Kareivijų Viešpats prisiekė: “Tave užplūs žmonės kaip skėriai ir pakels prieš tave savo balsus”.

15 Jis savo jėga sukūrė žemę, savo išmintimi padėjo pasaulio pamatą ir savo supratimu ištiesė dangų.

16 Jo balso klauso vandenys danguose, Jis pakelia garus nuo žemės pakraščių. Jis siunčia žaibus su lietumi, paleidžia vėją iš savo sandėlių.

17 Žmogus neturi pažinimo ir yra neišmintingas. Amatininkai bus sugėdinti dėl savo drožinių, jų lieti atvaizdai yra apgaulė, juose nėra kvapo.

18 Jie yra tuštybė, paklydimo darbai. Jie pražus aplankymo dieną.

19 Visai kitokia yra Jokūbo dalis. Jis yra visa ko Kūrėjas, Izraelis yra Jo nuosavybė. Kareivijų Viešpats yra Jo vardas.

20 “Tu esi mano kūjis ir kovos ginklas. Tavimi sudaužysiu tautas ir sunaikinsiu karalystes.

21 Tavimi sunaikinsiu žirgą ir raitelį, kovos vežimą ir jame esantį.

22 Tavimi sunaikinsiu vyrą ir moterį, seną ir jauną, jaunuolį ir mergaitę,

23 piemenį ir bandą, artoją ir jungą su gyvuliais, kunigaikščius ir valdovus.

24 Bet Aš atlyginsiu Babilonui ir visiems Chaldėjos gyventojams jūsų akivaizdoje už jų piktybes, padarytas Sione,­sako Viešpats.­

25 Tu buvai naikinantis kalnas, sugadinęs visą žemę. Aš ištiesiu savo ranką prieš tave, sulyginsiu tave su žeme ir paversiu pelenais.

26 Tavo akmenų nenaudos nei kampams, nei pamatams. Tu būsi amžina dykyne.

27 Iškelkite vėliavą, trimituokite trimitais, kad išgirstų tautos. Sušaukite prieš jį Ararato, Minio ir Aškenazo karalystes. Paskirkite kariuomenei vadą ir surinkite tiek karių kaip skėrių laukuose.

28 Pasiruoškite kovai kartu su medų karaliais, valdovais, kunigaikščiais ir visais jų valdžioje esančiais kraštais.

29 Žemė pajudės ir drebės, nes Babilonui bus įvykdytas Viešpaties sprendimas. Babilono kraštas taps tuščias ir negyvenamas”.

30 Babilono kariai nebeina į kovą. Jie sėdi tvirtovėse netekę drąsos. Jų gyvenvietės dega, vartai išlaužti.

31 Pasiuntinys sutinka pasiuntinį. Jie neša žinią Babilono karaliui, kad jo miestas paimtas iš visų pusių:

32 brastos užimtos, įtvirtinimai dega, kariai apimti panikos.

33 Kareivijų Viešpats, Izraelio Dievas, sako: “Babilonas yra kaip klojimas kūlimo metu. Dar valandėlė, ir derliaus metas ateis”.

34 “Nebukadnecaras, Babilono karalius, ėdė mane ir naikino, paliko mane kaip tuščią indą. Jis prarijo mane kaip slibinas. Pripildęs savo pilvą mano gardumynais, mane išstūmė.

35 Man ir mano žmonėms padaryta skriauda tekrinta ant Babilono”,­sakys Sionas. “Mano kraujas tekrinta ant Chaldėjos”,­sakys Jeruzalė.

36 Viešpats sako: “Aš ginsiu tavo bylą ir atkeršysiu už tave. Aš išdžiovinsiu Babilono vandenis, jo šaltiniai išseks.

37 Babilonas pavirs griuvėsių krūva šakalams gyventi, vieta pasibaisėjimo ir pajuokos, be gyventojų.

38 Jie riaumos kaip liūtai, staugs kaip liūtų jaunikliai.

39 Aš jiems paruošiu puotą: jie nusigers ir užmigs amžinu miegu.

40 Aš juos nuvesiu į skerdyklą kaip avinėlius, avinus ir ožius.

41 Krito Šešachas, pasaulio puošmena! Babilonas tapo siaubu tautoms!

42 Jūra įsiveržė į Babiloną, daugybė bangų užliejo jį.

43 Jo miestai virto dykyne, išdžiūvusia žeme, kurioje niekas negyvena ir joks žmogus per ją nekeliauja.

44 Aš nubausiu Belį Babilone ir išplėšiu iš jo gerklės, ką jis prarijo. Tautos nebeplauks pas jį. Babilono sienos krito.

45 Išeik iš jo, mano tauta! Kiekvienas gelbėkite savo gyvybę nuo degančios Viešpaties rūstybės.

46 Nenusiminkite, neišsigąskite gandų, kurie kas metai sklis krašte apie neramumus ir valdovų tarpusavio kovas.

47 Ateina laikas, kai Aš teisiu Babilono atvaizdus; visas kraštas susigės, o jo gyventojai bus išžudyti.

48 Tada dangus, žemė ir visa, kas juose yra, džiaugsis žuvimu Babilono, kurį užims iš šiaurės atėjęs naikintojas.

49 Kaip Babilono ranka žudė Izraelyje, taip Babilone kris nužudytieji.

50 Jūs, kurie ištrūkote nuo kardo, eikite, nestovėkite vietoje, ir, toli būdami, atsiminkite Viešpatį ir Jeruzalę”.

51 Mes susigėdome, girdėdami pajuokas; gėda apdengė mūsų veidus, kai svetimi atėjo į šventąją vietą Viešpaties namuose.

52 “Ateis diena, kai Aš nuteisiu jų drožinius; tuomet visame krašte vaitos sužeistieji.

53 Jei Babilonas pakiltų iki dangaus ir savo pilis pastatytų iki debesų, mano siųstas naikintojas užklups jį”,­sako Viešpats.

54 Šauksmas kyla iš Babilono, baisus sunaikinimas Chaldėjos krašte,

55 nes Viešpats plėšia Babiloną ir tildo jo galingą balsą, nors jo bangos šniokščia kaip galingi vandenys, girdimi jų triukšmingi balsai.

56 Priešas veržiasi į Babiloną; jo kariai patenka į nelaisvę, jų lankai sulaužyti. Viešpats, atlygio Dievas, tikrai atlygins.

57 “Aš nugirdysiu Babilono kunigaikščius, išminčius, valdovus, karo vadus ir karius. Jie užmigs amžinu miegu ir nepabus”,­sako Karalius, kareivijų Viešpats.

58 “Plačioji Babilono siena bus sulyginta su žeme ir aukštieji vartai sudeginti. Tautos vargo veltui, giminės dirbo ir statė ugniai”,­sako Viešpats.

59 Pranašo Jeremijo žodis Serajai, Machsėjos sūnaus Nerijos sūnui, kai jis lydėjo Zedekiją, Judo karalių, jo ketvirtais karaliavimo metais į Babiloną. Seraja buvo žymus kunigaikštis.

60 Jeremijas užrašė į knygą visas nelaimes, kurios ištiks Babiloną, visus žodžius, kurie parašyti prieš Babiloną.

61 Jeremijas sakė Serajai: “Nuvykęs į Babiloną, perskaityk visus šiuos žodžius

62 ir sakyk: ‘Viešpatie, Tu grasinai šitą vietą taip sunaikinti, kad čia nebebūtų nieko: nei žmonių, nei gyvulių, ir ji liktų amžina dykyne’.

63 Perskaitęs šią knygą, pririšk prie jos akmenį ir įmesk ją į Eufrato upę,

63. Verse 13. And in the midst of the seven lampstands one like unto the Son of man, signifies the Lord, from whom is the All of heaven and of the church. This is evident from the signification of "in the midst," as being in the inmost (See Arcana Coelestia., n. 1074, 2940, 2973); and as all things proceed from the inmost, as light proceeds from the center to the circumferences, so "in the midst" signifies from whom; also from the signification of "the seven lampstands," as being the new heaven and the new church (of which just above, n. 62; and from the signification of "the Son of man," as being the Lord in respect to the Divine Human, and also in respect to Divine truth, because Divine truth proceeds from His Divine Human. From this it can be seen why the Lord appeared "in the midst of seven lampstands," namely, because from Him the All of heaven and the church proceeds; for it is the good of love and of faith that makes heaven and the church, and that this good is from the Divine is known in the Christian world, and as it is from the Divine, it is from the Lord, for the Lord is the God of heaven, and the Divine of the Lord makes heaven (See the work on Heaven and Hell (Heaven and Hell 2-6, 7-12 that this is His Divine Human, 78-86).

[2] That the Son of man is the Lord in respect to the Divine Human, and also in respect to Divine truth, because Divine truth proceeds from His Divine Human, is evident from those passages in the Word where the Son of man is mentioned. Thus in John:

The multitude said to Jesus, How sayest Thou, The Son of man must be lifted up? Who is this Son of man? Jesus answered thee, Yet a little while is the light with you; walk while ye have the light, lest darkness overtake you. While ye have the light believe in the light, that ye may be sons of light (John 12:34-36).

From these words it is clear that "the Son of man" and "Light" have a like signification; for when the people asked, Who is the Son of man? the Lord answered that He was the Light in which they should believe. (That "light" is the Divine truth proceeding from the Lord's Divine Human, see in the work on Heaven and Hell 126-140; and in The Doctrine of the New Jerusalem 49; thus also the Son of man. )

[3] In Luke:

Blessed are ye when men shall hate you for the Son of man's sake (Luke 6:22).

"For the Son of man's sake" is for the sake of Divine truth that proceeds from the Lord. Divine truth is the All of faith in and of love to the Lord. Because the evil deny these things, and those who deny also hate them, while the good acknowledge them, therefore it is said that the good are blessed.

[4] In the same:

The days will come when ye shall desire to see one of the days of the Son of man, but ye shall not see it. Then they shall say to you, Lo here, or Lo there. Go not away, nor pursue after (Luke 17:22-23).

"To desire [to see] one of the days of the Son of man," is to desire Divine truth, which is genuine truth, as to something thereof; the end of the church is here meant, when there will no longer be any faith, because there will be no charity, at which time all Divine truth will perish; and because Divine truth is signified by "the Son of man," it is said, "Then shall they say, Lo here, or Lo there; pursue not after."

[5] In the same:

When the Son of man cometh, shall He find faith upon the earth? (Luke 18:8);

which means that when Divine truth shall be revealed out of heaven it will not be believed. Here also, "the Son of man" is the Lord in respect to Divine truth; the coming of the Lord is the revelation of Divine truth at the end of the church (See Arcana Coelestia 3900, 4060).

[6] In Matthew:

As the lightning cometh forth from the east, and is seen even unto the west, so shall the coming of the Son of man be. Then shall appear the sign of the Son of man in heaven; and then shall all the tribes of the earth lament, and they shall see the Son of man coming in the clouds of heaven, with power and glory (Matthew 24:27, 30).

That by "the coming of the Lord in the clouds of heaven" is here signified the revelation of Divine truth at the end of the church, see above n. 36.

[7] In the same:

I say unto you, Henceforth ye shall see the Son of man sitting at the right hand of power, and coming in the clouds of heaven (Matthew 26:64).

And in Luke:

From henceforth shall the Son of man be seated at the right hand of the power of God (Luke 22:69).

"The Son of man" is the Lord in respect to the Divine Human, and in respect to Divine truth proceeding from Him; "to sit at the right hand of power" means that He has omnipotence; its being said that they were now about to see this means that Divine truth was in its omnipotence when the Lord in the world had conquered the hells and reduced to order all things there and in the heavens, and that thus those who received Him in faith and love could be saved (See Arcana Coelestia 9715. That to "sit at the right hand" means omnipotence, see Arcana Coelestia 3387, 4592, 4933, 7518, 8281, 9193; that all the power of good is by means of truth, n. 6344, 6423, 8304, 9327, 9410, 9639, 9643. That Divine power itself is by means of Divine truth proceeding from the Lord's Divine Human, see n. 6948; that the "clouds" in which the Son of man is to come are the Word in the letter, which is Divine truth in the ultimate of order, see the preface to chapter 18 of Genesis, n. 4060, 4391, 5922, 6343, 6752, 8443, 8781; and that "glory" is Divine truth itself, such as it is in the internal sense of the Word, see n. 4809, 5922, 8267, 9429).

[8] From this it can now be seen what is signified by these words in Revelation:

I saw, and behold, a white cloud, and upon the cloud one sat like unto the Son of man, having on His head a golden crown (Revelation 14:14).

And in Daniel:

I saw in the night visions, and behold, there came with the clouds of the heavens one like unto the Son of man (Daniel 7:13).

Because all judgment is executed according to truth, therefore it is said, that it was given to the Lord:

To execute judgment, because He is the Son of man (John 5:27); and that:

The Son of man shall render unto every man according to his deeds (Matthew 16:27);

and that:

When the Son of man shall come, He shall sit on the throne of His glory, and shall judge (Matthew 25:31).

[9] In Matthew:

He that soweth the good seed is the Son of man, the field is the world, the seed are the sons of the kingdom, the tares are the sons of the evil one (Matthew 13:37-38).

"Good seed" is Divine truth; it is therefore said that the Son of man soweth it; "the sons of the kingdom" are Divine truths in heaven and the church; for "son" is truth (See Arcana Coelestia 489, 491, 533, 1147, 2623), and, in the contrary sense, falsity, which also is "the son of the evil one."

[10] In the same:

The Son of man hath not where to lay His head (Matthew 8:20);

by which is meant that Divine truth had no place anywhere, that is, with any man at that time. That the Son of man was about to suffer and be put to death (Matthew 17:12, 22-23; 26:2, 24, 45; Mark 8:31; 9:12, 31) signifies that thus they were about to treat Divine truth, consequently the Lord, who was Divine truth itself. This He also teaches in Luke:

But first must the Son of man suffer, and be rejected of this generation (Luke 17:25).

[11] In Jeremiah:

No man [vir] shall dwell there; neither shall a son of man [hominis] sojourn there (Jeremiah 49:18, 33).

And in the same:

In the cities no man [vir] shall dwell, nor shall a son of man [hominis] pass through them (Jeremiah 51:43).

He who does not know the spiritual sense of the Word believes that by "cities" here are meant cities, and that by "man," and "son of man," are meant a man and a son; and that the cities were to be so desolated that no one should be in them, but it is the state of the church in respect to the doctrine of truth that is described by these words; for "cities" are the doctrinals of the church (See Arcana Coelestia 402, 2449, 3216, 492, 4493); and "man" is its very truth conjoined with good (See n. 3134, 7716, 9007); therefore a "son of man" is truth.

[12] As Divine truth proceeding from the Lord was signified by "the Son of man," therefore the prophets by whom it was revealed were called "sons of man" (as Daniel 8:17; and Ezekiel 2:1, 3, 6, 8; 3:1, 3-4, 10, 17, 25; 4:1, 16; 8:5-6, 8, 12, 15; 12:2, 3, 9, 18, 22, 27). As most things in the Word have also a contrary sense, so "son of man" has a contrary signification, which is the falsity opposite to truth. Thus in Isaiah:

What art thou, that thou art afraid of man, that dies; and of the son of man, who shall be as grass (Isaiah 51:12).

And in David:

Put not your trust in princes, in the son of man, with whom there is no salvation (Psalms 146:3).

"Princes" are primary truths (See Arcana Coelestia 2089, 5044); so, in the contrary sense, primary falsities; and "the son of man" is falsity itself.

9643. 'And forty bases of silver' means complete support received through truth. This is clear from the meaning of 'forty' as completeness, dealt with in 9437; from the meaning of 'bases' as support, since bases serve as supports; and from the meaning of 'silver' as truth, dealt with in 1551, 2954, 5658, 6112, 6914, 6917, 7999. The bases were made from silver and the boards overlaid with gold because good is meant by 'the boards', 9634, and truth by 'the bases', and good possesses power and on this account lends support through truth. As regards good, that it possesses power through truth, see 6344, 6423, 9327, 9410, and that 'gold' means good and 'silver' truth, 113, 1551, 1552, 5658, 6914, 6917, 8932, 9490, 9510. Good possesses power through truth because truth gives shape to good, which means that good also possesses specific quality; for outward shape exists where specific quality does so. The good can then be a real influence among things, in one way or another. So it is that the ability resides potentially in good, but that this cannot be exercised except through truth. Ability so exercised is actual power, consequently power that provides support.

[2] Bases also correspond to a person's feet and soles of the feet; in general they correspond to the bones, which lend support to all the fleshy parts in the body. By the feet and likewise the bones truth that provides support is meant, and by the fleshy parts in the body good which supports itself by means of truth.

All things on the natural level resemble the human form, and carry the same meaning as the parts of it they resemble, see 9496.

'Flesh' means good, 3813, 6968, 7850, 9127.

'Feet' means the natural, thus truth that has power from good within it, 5327, 5328.

'Body' means good, 6135.

'Bones' means truth that provides support, 3812 (end), 8005.

[3] So it is also that by 'foundations', which are a general base, the truth of faith and faith itself are meant, as becomes clear from places in the Word where 'foundations' are mentioned, for example in Isaiah,

Do you not know, do you not hear, do you not understand the foundations of the earth? Isaiah 40:21.

A person unacquainted with what 'the foundations' and what 'the earth' mean inevitably takes 'the foundations of the earth' here to denote the inner depths of the planet, even though he may realize, if he stops to think about it, that something other than them is meant; for what meaning can knowing, hearing, and understanding the foundations of the earth have? From this it becomes clear that by 'the foundations of the earth' such things as have to do with the Church are meant. The fact that 'the earth' in the Word means the Church is plainly evident from places in the Word where 'the earth' is mentioned, see those quoted in 9325. And the fact that its foundations are the truths of faith, for these truths serve the Church as foundations, becomes clearer still from the following places: In David,

They do not acknowledge, neither do they understand; they walk in darkness. All the foundations of the earth are unstable. Psalms 82:5.

It is not the foundations of the earth that are unstable but, as is self-evident, it is the truths of the Church with those who neither acknowledge nor understand them and walk in darkness. In the same author,

The earth quaked and trembled, and the foundations of the mountains shook and quaked. Psalms 18:7.

'The mountains' are forms of the good of love, 795, 4210, 6435, 8327, their 'foundations' are the truths of faith. In Isaiah,

The floodgates from on high have been opened, and the foundations of the earth have been shaken. Isaiah 24:18.

Since 'the foundations' means the truth of faith, and 'city' doctrine based on it, therefore also the Word speaks of 'the foundations of the city' when the truth of doctrine is meant. For the meaning of 'city' as doctrinal teachings based on truth, see 402, 2449, 2943, 3216, 4492, 4493.

[4] This goes to show what the meaning is of 'the foundations of the city, the holy Jerusalem' in John,

The wall of the city, the holy Jerusalem, had twelve foundations, and on them the names of the twelve apostles of the Lamb. The foundations of the wall of the city were adorned with every kind of precious stone. Revelation 21:14, 19-20.

A person unacquainted with what 'the holy Jerusalem', 'the city', 'the wall', 'the foundations', and 'the twelve apostles' mean cannot see any arcanum at all that lies within this description. Nevertheless 'the holy Jerusalem' means the Lord's New Church which will take the place of the one that is ours at the present day; 1 'the city' doctrinal teachings; 'the wall' the truth protecting and defending, and 'its foundations' the truths of faith; and 'the twelve apostles' all forms of the good of love and the truths of faith in their entirety. From this it becomes clear why it says that there will be twelve foundations, adorned with every kind of precious stone; for 'precious stone' means the truth of faith springing from the good of love, 114, 3858, 6640, 9476, and 'the twelve apostles' all aspects of love and faith in their entirety, 3488, 3858 (end), 6397.

[5] From all this it is evident what is meant by 'the foundations' in those verses in John and also by 'the foundations' in Isaiah,

Behold, I am arranging your stones with antimony, and will lay your foundations in sapphires. Isaiah 54:11.

'Sapphires' are interior truths, 9407. In the same prophet,

Jehovah will strike Asshur with a rod. At that time every stroke 2 will be that of the rod of the foundation on which Jehovah will cause [him] to rest. Isaiah 30:31-32.

'The rod of the foundation' is the power of truth. For the meaning of 'the rod' as power, see 4013, 4015, 4876, 4936, 6947, 7011, 7026. And in Jeremiah,

They shall not take from you a stone for a corner, nor a stone for foundations. Jeremiah 51:26.

'A stone for foundations' stands for the truths of faith.

[6] In Job,

Where were you when I laid the foundations of the earth? Tell Me, if you have understanding. 3 Who determined the measures of it, if you know? Onto what [were] its bases [fastened]? Or who laid its corner-stone, when the morning stars sang together, and all the sons of God bellowed? Job 38:4-7.

A person unacquainted with what 'the earth', 'its measures', and 'its bases' mean in the internal sense, and also what 'corner-stone', 'morning stars', and 'the sons of God' mean, sees no arcanum at all in this description. He will suppose that the actual earth, and also the foundations, measures, bases, and corner-stone of it are what is meant. Nor will he have any idea at all of what is meant by 'the morning stars sang' and 'the sons of God bellowed'. But a person will pass from darkness to light if he knows that 'the earth' is the Church, 'its foundations' are the truth of faith, 'its measures' the state of good and truth, 'its bases' the actual truths that provide support, 'the corner-stone' the power of truth, 'the morning stars' cognitions or knowledge of good and of truth springing from good, and 'the sons of God' God's truths. These sons are said 'to bellow' when they come into existence, those stars 'to sing' when they rise.
