48 And Abimelech gat him up to mount Zalmon, he and all the people that were with him; and Abimelech took an axe in his hand, and cut down a bough from the trees, and took it, and laid it on his shoulder, and said unto the people that were with him, What ye have seen me do, make haste, and do as I have done.

Commentary

 

Grieve at heart, to

  

'To grieve at heart' is in reference to love, and 'to repent,' to wisdom, as in Genesis 6:6.

591. Verse 7 And Jehovah said, I will wipe out man whom I have created from upon the face 1 of the ground, from man even to beast, even to creeping thing, and even to birds of the air; 2 for I repent of having made them.

'Jehovah said, I will wipe out man' means that man would bring about his own end. 'Whom I have created from upon the face 1 of the ground' means mankind among the descendants of the Most Ancient Church. 'From man even to beast, and even to creeping thing' is the fact that everything belonging to his will would bring about his end. 'Even to birds of the air' 2 is everything belonging to the understanding or thought. 'For I repent of having made them', as previously, means compassion.
