1 E la parola dell’Eterno mi fu rivolta in questi termini:

2 "Figliuol d’uomo, c’erano due donne, figliuole d’una medesima madre,

3 le quali si prostituirono in Egitto; si prostituirono nella loro giovinezza; là furon premute le loro mammelle, e la fu compresso il loro vergine seno.

4 I loro nomi sono: quello della maggiore, Ohola; quella della sorella, Oholiba. Esse divennero mie, e mi partorirono figliuoli e figliuole; e questi sono i loro veri nomi: Ohola è Samaria, Oholiba è Gerusalemme.

5 E, mentre era mia, Ohola si prostituì, e s’appassionò per i suoi amanti,

6 gli Assiri, ch’eran suoi vicini, vestiti di porpora, governatori e magistrati, tutti bei giovani, cavalieri montati sui loro cavalli.

7 Ella si prostituì con loro, ch’eran tutti il fior fiore de’ figliuoli d’Assiria, e si contaminò con tutti quelli per i quali s’appassionava, con tutti i loro idoli.

8 Ed ella non abbandonò le prostituzioni che commetteva con gli Egiziani, quando questi giacevano con lei nella sua giovinezza, quando comprimevano il suo vergine seno e sfogavano su lei la loro lussuria.

9 Perciò io l’abbandonai in balìa de’ suoi amanti, in balìa de’ figliuoli d’Assiria, per i quali s’era appassionata.

10 Essi scoprirono la sua nudità, presero i suoi figliuoli e le sue figliuole, e la uccisero con la spada. Ed ella diventò famosa fra le donne, e su di lei furono eseguiti dei giudizi.

11 E la sua sorella vide questo, e nondimeno si corruppe più di lei ne’ suoi amori, e le sue prostituzioni sorpassarono le prostituzioni della sua sorella.

12 S’appassionò per i figliuoli d’Assiria, ch’eran suoi vicini, governatori e magistrati, vestiti pomposamente, cavalieri montati sui loro cavalli, tutti giovani e belli.

13 E io vidi ch’ella si contaminava; ambedue seguivano la medesima via;

14 ma questa superò l’altra nelle sue prostituzioni; vide degli uomini disegnati sui muri, delle immagini di Caldei dipinte in rosso,

15 con delle cinture ai fianchi, con degli ampi turbanti in capo, dall’aspetto di capitani, tutti quanti, ritratti de’ figliuoli di Babilonia, della Caldea, loro terra natia;

16 e, come li vide, s’appassionò per loro e mandò ad essi de’ messaggeri, in Caldea.

17 E i figliuoli di Babilonia vennero a lei, al letto degli amori, e la contaminarono con le loro fornicazioni; ed ella si contaminò con essi; poi, l’anima sua s’alienò da loro.

18 Ella mise a nudo le sue prostituzioni, mise a nudo la sua vergogna, e l’anima mia s’alienò da lei, come l’anima mia s’era alienata dalla sua sorella.

19 Nondimeno, ella moltiplicò le sue prostituzioni, ricordandosi dei giorni della sua giovinezza quando s’era prostituita nel paese d’Egitto;

20 e s’appassionò per quei fornicatori dalle membra d’asino, dall’ardor di stalloni.

21 Così tu tornasti alle turpitudini della tua giovinezza, quando gli egiziani ti premevan le mammelle a motivo del tuo vergine seno.

22 Perciò, Oholiba, così parla il Signore, l’Eterno: ecco, io susciterò contro di te i tuoi amanti, dai quali l’anima tua s’è alienata, li farò venire contro di te da tutte le parti:

23 i figliuoli di Babilonia e tutti i Caldei, principi, ricchi e grandi, e tutti i figliuoli d’Assiria con loro, giovani e belli, tutti governatori e magistrati, capitani e consiglieri, tutti montati sui loro cavalli.

24 Essi vengono contro di te con armi, carri e ruote, e con una folla di popoli; con targhe, scudi, ed elmi si schierano contro di te d’ogn’intorno; io rimetto in mano loro il giudizio, ed essi ti giudicheranno secondo le loro leggi.

25 Io darò corso alla mia gelosia contro di te, ed essi ti tratteranno con furore: ti taglieranno il naso e gli orecchi, e ciò che rimarrà di te cadrà per la spada; prenderanno i tuoi figliuoli e le tue figliuole e ciò che rimarrà di te sarà divorato dal fuoco.

26 E ti spoglieranno delle tue vesti, e porteran via gli oggetti di cui t’adorni.

27 E io farò cessare la tua lussuria e la tua prostituzione cominciata nel paese d’Egitto, e tu non alzerai più gli occhi verso di loro, e non ti ricorderai più dell’Egitto.

28 Poiché così parla il Signore, l’Eterno: Ecco, io ti do in mano di quelli che tu hai in odio, in mano di quelli, dai quali l’anima tua s’è alienata.

29 Essi ti tratteranno con odio, porteran via tutto il frutto del tuo lavoro, e ti lasceranno nuda e scoperta; e così saran messe allo scoperto la vergogna della tua impudicizia, la tua lussuria e le tue prostituzioni.

30 Queste cose ti saran fatte, perché ti sei prostituita correndo dietro alle nazioni, perché ti sei contaminata coi loro idoli.

31 Tu hai camminato per la via della tua sorella, e io ti metto in mano la sua coppa.

32 Così parla il Signore, l’Eterno: Tu berrai la coppa della tua sorella: coppa profonda ed ampia, sarai esposta alle risa ed alle beffe; la coppa è di gran capacità.

33 Tu sarai riempita d’ebbrezza e di dolore: e la coppa della desolazione e della devastazione, è la coppa della tua sorella Samaria.

34 E tu la berrai, la vuoterai, ne morderai i pezzi, e te ne squarcerai il seno; poiché son io quegli che ho parlato, dice il Signore, l’Eterno.

35 Perciò così parla il Signore, l’Eterno: Poiché tu m’hai dimenticato e m’hai buttato dietro le spalle, porta dunque anche tu, la pena della tua scelleratezza e delle tue prostituzioni".

36 E l’Eterno mi disse: "Figliuol d’uomo non giudicherai tu Ohola e Oholiba? Dichiara loro dunque le loro abominazioni!

37 Poiché han commesso adulterio, han del sangue sulle mani; han commesso adulterio coi loro idoli, e gli stessi figliuoli che m’avean partorito, li ha fatti passare per il fuoco perché servissero loro di pasto.

38 E anche questo m’hanno fatto: in quel medesimo giorno han contaminato il mio santuario, e han profanato i miei sabati.

39 Dopo aver immolato i loro figliuoli ai loro idoli, in quello stesso giorno son venute nel mio santuario per profanarlo; ecco, quello che hanno fatto in mezzo alla mia casa.

40 E, oltre a questo, hanno mandato a cercare uomini che vengon da lontano; ad essi hanno invitato de’ messaggeri, ed ecco che son venuti. Per loro ti sei lavata, ti sei imbellettata gli occhi, ti sei parata d’ornamenti;

41 ti sei assisa sopra un letto sontuoso, davanti al quale era disposta una tavola; e su quella hai messo il mio profumo e il mio olio.

42 E là s’udiva il rumore d’una folla sollazzante, e oltre alla gente presa tra la folla degli uomini, sono stati introdotti degli ubriachi venuti dal deserto, che han messo de’ braccialetti hai polsi delle due sorelle, e de’ magnifici diademi sul loro capo.

43 E io ho detto di quella invecchiata negli adulteri: Anche ora commettono prostituzioni con lei!… proprio con lei!

44 E si viene ad essa, come si va da una prostituta! Così si viene da Ohola e Oholiba, da queste donne scellerate.

45 Ma degli uomini giusti le giudicheranno, come si giudican le adultere, come si giudican le donne che spandono il sangue; perché sono adultere, e hanno del sangue sulle mani.

46 Perciò così parla il Signore, l’Eterno: Sarà fatta salire contro di loro una moltitudine, ed esse saranno date in balìa del terrore e del saccheggio.

47 E quella moltitudine le lapiderà, e le farà a pezzi con la spada; ucciderà i loro figliuoli e le loro figliuole, e darà alle fiamme le loro case.

48 E io farò cessare la scelleratezza nel paese, e tutte le donne saranno ammaestrate a non commetter più turpitudini come le vostre.

49 E la vostra scelleratezza vi sarà fatta ricadere addosso, e voi porterete la pena della vostra idolatria, e conoscerete che io sono il Signore, l’Eterno".

126. And I will give thee a crown of life. That this signifies wisdom, and thence eternal happiness, is evident from the signification of a crown, when said of those who are in the spiritual affection of the knowledges (cognitiones) of truth and good, as being wisdom, concerning which more will be said in what follows; and from the signification of life, as being eternal happiness, which is also called life eternal. The reason why those who are in the spiritual affection of truth and good, and who are here treated of, have eternal happiness is, that heaven is implanted in man by means of the knowledges of truth and good from the Word. He who believes that heaven is implanted by any other means, is much deceived; for man is born natural only, with the faculty of becoming spiritual; but he becomes spiritual by means of truths from the Word, and by a life according to them. How can any one ever become spiritual, unless he be instructed about the Lord, about heaven, a life after death, faith, and love, and other things which are the means of salvation? If man is ignorant of these things, he must remain natural; and a merely natural man cannot have anything in common with the angels of heaven, who are spiritual.

Man has two minds, one exterior, and the other interior; the exterior mind is called the natural mind, but the interior is called the spiritual mind; the former is opened by means of the knowledges (cognitiones) of things in the world, but the latter by the knowledges (cognitiones) of things which are in heaven; these the Word teaches, and the church from the Word; by means of these man becomes spiritual, when he knows them and lives according to them.

[2] This is meant by the words of the Lord in John:

"Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God" (3:5):

by water, are signified the truths of faith, and by spirit, a life according to them (as may be seen above, n. 71; and in The Doctrine of the New Jerusalem 202-209). Very many people believe at this day, that mankind will go to heaven solely by sacred worship performed in temples, and by adorations and prayers; but such of them as are unconcerned about the knowledges (cognitiones) of truth and good from the Word, and who neglect to furnish not only the memory, but also the life, with these, remain natural as before, nor do they become spiritual, because their sacred worship, adorations and prayers, do not proceed from a spiritual origin; for their spiritual mind is not opened by the knowledges of spiritual things and by a life according to them, but is empty; and worship proceeding from what is void is only a natural gesture, within which there is nothing spiritual. If such persons are insincere and unjust as to moral and civil life, then their sacred worship, adorations and prayers are inwardly of such a nature as to repel heaven, instead of which they believe that they receive heaven by this means; for such worship is like a vessel containing putrid or filthy matters, which filter through; it is also like a splendid garment that clothes a body covered with ulcers: I have seen many thousands of such cast into hell. But it is otherwise with the holy worship, the adorations and prayers of those who are in the knowledges of truth and good, and whose life is in accordance with them; with such, those things are pleasing to the Lord, for they are the effects of their spirit in the body, or the effects of their faith and love, and thus are not only natural gestures, but spiritual acts.

From these considerations it is evident that the knowledges of truth and good from the Word, and a life in agreement with them, alone make man spiritual: and that he who is thus made spiritual can be gifted with angelic wisdom from the Lord, together with eternal happiness; nor do the angels derive happiness from any other source than wisdom.

[3] The reason why a crown signifies wisdom is, that all those things that clothe man, and distinguish him, derive their signification from that part of him which they clothe or adorn (see Arcana Coelestia 9827), and a crown signifies wisdom, because it is worn on the head, by which in the Word wisdom is signified, for there wisdom resides. Accordingly it is written in Ezekiel:

"I have adorned thee with ornament, and I have placed bracelets upon thy hands; and a chain upon thy neck. Moreover, I have put a jewel upon thy nose, and earrings upon thine ears, and a crown of ornament upon thy head" (16:11, 12).

Jerusalem is here treated of, by which is signified the church, as established by the Lord, and its quality; by the particular adornments here mentioned are meant, in the spiritual sense, such things as belong to the church; these derive their respective significations from the part to which they are applied; by a crown is here meant wisdom. (But what is meant specifically by ornament, may be seen, Arcana Coelestia 10536, 10540; what by bracelets, n. 3103, 3105; what by a chain, n. 5320; what by a jewel, n. 4551; and what by earrings, n. 4551, 10402.) Similarly the wisdom that is from the knowledges of truth and good from the Word and from a life according to them, is signified by a crown in many other passages in the Word, as in Isaiah 28:5; Jeremiah 13:18; Lamentations 5:15, 16; Ezekiel 21:25, 26; 23:42; Zech. 6:11-13; Psalms 89:38, 39; 132:17, 18; Job. 19:9; Apoc. 3:11; 4:4. The custom of crowning kings comes down from ancient times, when men were acquainted with representatives and significatives, for they knew that kings represented the Lord as to Divine truth, and that a crown was used to signify wisdom. (That kings represented the Lord as to Divine truth, may be seen, Arcana Coelestia 1672, 2015, 2069, 3009, 4581, 4966, 5068, 6148.) That those who are in truths are called kings and kings' sons (see above, n. 31). And because those who are in the knowledges of truth are called kings in the Word, and kings have crowns, therefore in this place, where they are treated of, it is said that they should receive a crown of life.

10402. 'Pull away the ear-jewels of gold from the ears of your wives, of your sons, and of your daughters' means drawing out of the literal sense of the Word such things as are favourable to external forms of love and to the immediate offspring of these loves. This is clear from the meaning of 'pulling away' as drawing out, at this point out of the literal sense of the Word since that sense is the subject; from the meaning of 'the ear-jewels of gold which are on the ears' as symbols representative of obedience to the delights belonging to external kinds of love and discernment of them, for obedience and discernment are meant by 'the ears', and the good of love - at this point the delight belonging to external kinds of love - is meant by 'gold', so that 'the ear-jewels of gold' are symbols representative of that obedience and discernment (for the meaning of 'the ears' as obedience and discernment, see 2542, 4652-4660, 8990, 9397, 10061; for that of 'gold' as the good of love, 1551, 1552, 5658, 6914, 6917, 9510, 9874, 9881, so that when it has reference to external kinds of love, which are self-love and love of the world, 'gold' means the delight belonging to them, thus that which is evil, 8932; and the fact that 'ear-jewels' consequently are symbols representative of obedience and discernment, 4551); from the meaning of 'wives' as forms of good in the Church, dealt with in 3160, 4823, 6014, 7022, 8337, and therefore in the contrary sense as forms of evil there, 409; from the meaning of 'sons' as truths, and in the contrary sense as falsities, dealt with in 489, 491, 533, 1147, 2623, 2803, 2813, 3373, 3704, 4257, 6583, 6584, 9807; and from the meaning of 'daughters' as affections for truth and good, and therefore in the contrary sense as affections for falsity and evil, dealt with in 2362, 3963, 6729. From all this it is evident that 'pull away the ear-jewels of gold from the ears of your wives, of your sons, and of your daughters' means drawing out of the literal sense of the Word such things as are discerned to be obedient or favourable to the delights belonging to external forms of love and favourable to the major ideas resulting from these.

[2] The fact that 'ear-jewels' are symbols of obedience and discernment is clear in Hosea,

Contend with your mother, since she is not My wife, in order that she may remove her whoredoms from her sight 1 , lest perhaps I strip her naked, and make her like a wilderness, and do not have mercy on her children, since she has said, I will go after my lovers, those giving me my bread and my water, my wool and my linen. And she did not know that it was I who gave her the grain and the new wine and the oil, and who multiplied the silver for her, and the gold they made for baal. And I will lay waste her vine and her fig tree. And I will visit on her 2 the days of the baals to whom she burned incense and decked herself with her ear-jewels and her other jewellery, and went after her lovers and forgot Me. Hosea 2:1-13.

'Burning incense to and decking herself with ear-jewels for the baals' denotes worshipping the baals as gods and being obedient to them.

[3] Earlier parts of that chapter have also been quoted to allow it to be seen what the outward sense of the Word is like without the inward, and what it is like together with the inward, and so how the Word is understood by those who see its outward statements in isolation from what is inward, and how it is understood by those who see the outward statements from the point of view of that which is inward. Those who see the outward statements in isolation from what is inward inevitably take them literally. That is, they take them to mean that they should literally contend with the mother of the children of Israel; that she was literally no longer loved by Jehovah as a wife; that if she did not remove the whoredoms from herself she would literally be stripped naked and made like a wilderness, and Jehovah would not have mercy on her children, since she had said that she was going to go after her lovers who gave her bread, water, wool, and linen; that she did not know it was Jehovah who gave her the grain, the new wine, and the oil, and multiplied the silver; that they made the gold for baal; that for this reason her vine and her fig tree would be laid waste; and that there would literally be a visitation on her because she burned incense to the baals, decked herself with ear-jewels and other jewellery for them, and went after her adulterous lovers, forgetful of Jehovah.

[4] All this is the literal meaning, and so it is how those who see the outward statements in isolation from their inward meaning understand the Word, for it is how the Jews at the present day and also some Christians understand it. But that is not the real meaning of the Word, as all who have any degree of enlightenment may see. By 'mother', regarding whom all those things are stated, they do not understand a mother but the kind of Church that existed among that nation. They take each of the things stated regarding her to mean something that has to do with the Church; for all those things are such as follow in order from what is put forward or laid down first. That is how they take 'whoredoms', 'lovers', and 'children' or 'sons', then 'bread, water, wool, linen, grain, new wine, oil, silver, gold', after that 'vine and fig', and also 'incense' and 'ear-jewels'.

[5] What each of these serves to mean can be known from no other source than the internal sense. In this sense 'mother' and 'wife' mean the Church; 'making her naked, and like a wilderness' means leaving it without any good of love or truth of faith, truths of faith and forms of the good of love, of which it will be bereft, being meant by 'sons', 'bread and water', 'wool and linen', 'grain, new wine, oil, silver, and gold', and finally 'vine and fig'. The actual worship springing from obedience to falsities and evils, which take over for truths and forms of good, is meant by 'burning incense to the baals and being decked out with ear-jewels and other jewellery for them'.

'Mother' means the Church, see 289, 2691, 2717, 4257, 5581.

So does 'wife', 252, 253, 409, 749, 770, 7022.

'Her being made naked' means being deprived of forms of the good of love and the truths of faith, 9960.

'A wilderness' means a state devoid of the Church's truth and good, 2708, 3900, 4736, 7055.

'Whoredoms' means falsifications of truth, 2466, 2729, 4865, 8904, so that 'lovers' means those who falsify.

'Sons' means truths, and in the contrary sense falsities, 489, 491, 533, 1147, 2623, 2803, 2813, 3373, 3704, 4257, 6583, 6584, 9807.

'Bread and water' means the good of love and truth of faith, 9323.

'Wool' means the good in the external man, 9470.

'Linen' means the truth there, 7601, 9959.

'Grain' means good from which truth may be obtained, 5295, 5410, 5959.

'New wine' means truth derived from good, 3580.

'Oil' means celestial good, 9780, 10261.

'Silver' means truth and 'gold' good in general, 1551, 1552, 5658, 6914,

6917, 9881.

'Vine' means the internal spiritual Church, 1069, 6376, 9277.

'Fig' means the external good of that Church, 217, 4231, 5113.

'Burning incense' means worship, 10177, 10298.

'Ear-jewel' is a symbol representative of obedience, 4551, so that 'being decked out with it' means offering obedience.

[6] When all the entities listed immediately above are understood instead of or in conjunction with the people or things that serve to mean them, the nature of the Word discerned on a spiritual level, thus the nature of the spirit within it, becomes apparent. All who read the Word are sustained by the Lord on that level of meaning; but none receive and accept it apart from those whose interiors are open. And since these receive it within the cognitions or knowledge they possess, they accept it so far as they can understand it, that is, in the measure and manner that their power of understanding can be enlightened through the cognitions or knowledge in their possession. In addition to this, they are affected in a general way by the holiness that radiates from the Word.
