1 OR la vita di Sara fu di cenventisette anni. Questi furono gli anni della vita di Sara.

2 E Sara morì in Chiriat-Arba, ch’è Hebron, nel paese di Canaan, ed Abrahamo entrò, per far duolo di Sara, e per piangerla.

3 Poi Abrahamo si levò d’appresso al suo morto, e parlò a’ figliuoli di Het, dicendo:

4 Io sono straniere ed avveniticcio appresso di voi; datemi la possessione di una sepoltura appo voi; acciocchè io seppellisca il mio morto, e mel levi d’innanzi.

5 E i figliuoli di Het risposero ad Abrahamo, dicendogli:

6 Signor mio, ascoltaci: Tu sei per mezzo noi un principe divino; seppellisci il tuo morto nella più scelta delle nostre sepolture; niuno di noi ti rifiuterà la sua sepoltura, che tu non vi seppellisca il tuo morto.

7 Ed Abrahamo si levò, e s’inchinò al popolo del paese, a’ figliuoli di Het; e parlò con loro, dicendo:

8 Se voi avete nell’animo che io seppellisca il mio morto, e mel levi d’innanzi, ascoltatemi: Intercedete per me appo Efron, figliuolo di Sohar;

9 che mi dia la spelonca di Macpela, che è sua, la quale è nell’estremità del suo campo; che me la dia per lo suo prezzo intiero, per possession di sepoltura fra voi.

10 Or Efron sedeva per mezzo i figliuoli di Het. Ed Efron Hitteo rispose ad Abrahamo, in presenza de’ figliuoli di Het, di tutti coloro ch’entravano nella porta della sua città, dicendo:

11 No, signor mio; ascoltami: Io ti dono il campo; ti dono ancora la spelonca ch’è in esso; io te ne fo un dono, in presenza de’ figliuoli del mio popolo; seppelliscivi il tuo morto.

12 Ed Abrahamo s’inchinò al popolo del paese;

13 e parlò ad Efron, in presenza del popolo del paese, dicendo: Anzi se così ti piace, ascoltami, ti prego: Io darò i danari del campo; prendili da me, ed io vi seppellirò il mio morto.

14 Ed Efron rispose ad Abrahamo, dicendogli:

15 Signor mio, ascoltami: Fra me e te che cosa è una terra di quattrocento sicli d’argento? seppelliscivi pure il tuo morto.

16 Ed Abrahamo acconsentì ad Efron, e gli pagò i danari ch’egli gli avea detto, in presenza de’ figliuoli di Het; cioè quattrocento sicli d’argento, correnti fra’ mercatanti.

17 Così l’acquisto del campo di Efron, il quale è in Macpela, ch’è dirimpetto a Mamre, insieme con la spelonca che è in esso, e con tutti gli alberi ch’erano in esso campo, in tutti i suoi confini attorno attorno,

18 fu fermato ad Abrahamo, in presenza de’ figliuoli di Het, fra tutti coloro ch’entravano nella porta della città di esso.

19 E dopo ciò, Abrahamo seppellì Sara, sua moglie, nella spelonca del campo di Macpela, ch’è dirimpetto a Mamre, ch’è Hebron, nel paese di Canaan.

20 Così l’acquisto di quel campo, e della spelonca ch’è in esso, fu fermato ad Abrahamo, per possession di sepoltura, dai figliuoli di Het.

Diodati’s first Italian Bible edition was printed in 1607, and his second in 1641. He died in 1649. Throughout the 1800s two editions of Diodati’s text were printed by the British Foreign Bible Society. This is the more recent 1894 edition, translated by Claudiana.

2905. A hundred years and twenty years and seven years. That this signifies their fullness, is evident from the signification of a “hundred,” as being what is full (see n. 2636); and of “twenty,” or twice ten, as being also what is full (see n. 1988); and of “seven,” as being what is holy (see n. 395, 433, 716, 881); thus it is the fullness or the end of what is holy belonging to the church that is here signified. (That numbers in the Word all signify things, may be seen above, n. 482, 487, 647, 648, 755, 813, 1963, 1988, 2075, 2252.)

[2] Their fullness, that is, the fullness of the states and times of the church, signifies their end; for the case with the church is like that of the ages of man, of which the first is childhood, the second youth, the third adult age, the fourth old age; the last, or old age, being called the fullness or end. It is also like the times and states of the year; of which the first is spring, the second summer, the third autumn, and the fourth winter; and this last is the end of the year. It is also like the times and states of the day, the first of which is dawn, the second noon, the third evening, and the fourth night; and when this has come, there is fullness or the end. To all these are the states of the church compared in the Word, and they are signified by the same; for by times are signified states (see n. 2625, 2788, 2837).

[3] The good and truth with those who are of the church are wont to decrease in this manner; and when there are no longer any good and truth (or as is said, when there is no longer any faith, that is, no charity) then the church has come to its old age, or its winter, or its night; and its time and state then are called “decision,” “consummation,” and “fulfillment” (see n. 1857). The same is signified when it is said of the Lord that He came into the world in the fullness of times, or when there was fullness; for there was then no longer any good, not even natural good; and consequently there was no truth. These are the things specifically signified by what is said in this verse.

395. That the words “whosoever slayeth Cain, vengeance shall be taken on him sevenfold” signify that to do violence to faith even when thus separated would be sacrilege, is evident from the signification of “Cain” which is faith separated from charity, and from the signification of “seven” which is what is sacred. The number “seven” was esteemed holy, as is well known, by reason of the six days of creation, and of the seventh, which is the celestial man, in whom is peace, rest, and the sabbath. Hence this number occurs so frequently in the rites of the Jewish Church, and is everywhere held sacred, and hence also both greater and less periods of time were distinguished into sevens, and were called “weeks” such as the great intervals of time to the coming of the Messiah (Daniel 9:24-25); and the time of seven years called a “week” by Laban and Jacob (Genesis 29:27-28). For the same reason, wherever it occurs, the number seven is accounted holy or inviolable. Thus we read in David:

Seven times a day do I praise Thee (Psalms 119:164).

In Isaiah:

The light of the moon shall be as the light of the sun, and the light of the sun shall be sevenfold, as the light of seven days (Isaiah 30:26),

where the “sun” denotes love, and the “moon” faith from love, which should be as love. As the periods of man’s regeneration are distinguished into six, before the seventh arrives, that is, the celestial man, so also are the periods of his vastation, up to the time when nothing celestial remains. This was represented by the several captivities of the Jews, and by the last or Babylonish captivity, which lasted seven decades, or seventy years. It is also said several times that the earth should rest on its sabbaths. The same is represented by Nebuchadnezzar, in Daniel:

His heart shall be changed from man, and a beast’s heart shall be given unto him, and seven times shall pass over him (Daniel 4:16, 23, 32).

And in John, concerning the vastation of the last times:

I saw another sign in heaven, great and marvelous, seven angels, having the seven last plagues (Revelation 15:1, 6-8);

and that:

The Gentiles should tread the holy city under foot forty and two months, or six times seven (Revelation 11:2).

And again:

I saw a book written within and on the back, sealed with seven seals (Revelation 5:1).

For the same reason the severities and augmentations of punishment were expressed by the number seven; as in Moses:

If ye will not yet for all this obey Me, then I will chastise you sevenfold for your sins (Leviticus 26:18, 21, 24, 28).

And in David:

Render unto our neighbors sevenfold into their bosom (Psalms 79:12).

Now as it was a sacrilege to do violence to faith-since as has been said it was to be of service-it is said that “whosoever should slay Cain, vengeance should be taken on him sevenfold.”
