Genesis 33

1 Kui Jaakob oma silmad üles tõstis ja vaatas, ennäe, siis tuli Eesav ja koos temaga nelisada meest. Ta jaotas nüüd lapsed Lea ja Raaheli ja mõlema teenija vahel,

2 seadis teenijad ja nende lapsed ette, Lea ja tema lapsed nende järele, Raaheli ja Joosepi viimaseiks.

3 Ta ise aga läks nende eel ja kummardas seitse korda maani, kuni ta jõudis oma venna juurde.

4 Aga Eesav jooksis temale vastu ja süleles teda, langes temale kaela ja suudles teda; ja nad nutsid.

5 Siis ta tõstis oma silmad üles ja nägi naisi ja lapsi, ja ta küsis: 'Kes need sul on?' Ja tema vastas: 'Need on lapsed, keda Jumal su sulasele armulikult on andnud.'

6 Ka teenijad astusid ligi, nemad ise ja nende lapsed, ja nad kummardasid.

7 Siis astus ligi ka Lea koos oma lastega ja nad kummardasid; lõppeks astusid ligi Joosep ja Raahel ja kummardasid.

8 Siis ta küsis: 'Mida sa kavatsed kogu selle leeriga, keda ma kohtasin?' Ja tema vastas: 'Oma isanda silmis armu leida!'

9 Aga Eesav ütles: 'Mul eneselgi on küllalt, mu vend. Jäägu sulle, mis sul on!'

10 Kuid Jaakob vastas: 'Sugugi mitte! Kui ma nüüd su silmis olen armu leidnud, siis võta mu kingitus minult vastu! Sest ma olen ju tohtinud näha su palet, otsekui näeks Jumala palet, ja sa oled olnud mu vastu lahke.

11 Võta nüüd minu tervituskink, mis sulle toodi, sest Jumal on olnud mu vastu armuline ja mul on kõike küllalt!' Ja ta käis temale peale, kuni ta võttis.

12 Siis ütles Eesav: 'Hakkame liikuma ja lähme, ja mina käin sinuga rinnu.'

13 Aga Jaakob vastas temale: 'Mu isand näeb ju, et lapsed on väetid ja minu hooleks on imetajad lambad ja lehmad; kui neid liiga kiiresti aetakse ühegi päeva, siis sureb kogu kari.

14 Mingu aga mu isand oma sulase eel ja mina liigun pikkamisi oma ees käiva karja kannul ja laste kannul, kuni ma jõuan oma isanda juurde Seiri.'

15 Eesav ütles: 'Ma jätan siis sinu juurde osa rahvast, kes koos minuga on.' Aga tema vastas: 'Mispärast nõnda? Kui ma ainult oma isanda silmis armu leiaksin!'

16 Ja Eesav läks selsamal päeval oma teed tagasi Seiri.

17 Aga Jaakob liikus Sukkotti, ehitas enesele koja ja tegi oma karjadele lehtkatused; seepärast pandi sellele paigale nimeks Sukkot.

18 Ja Jaakob jõudis Mesopotaamiast tulles õnnelikult Sekemi linna, mis on Kaananimaal, ja lõi linna ees leeri üles.

19 Ta ostis selle väljaosa, kuhu ta oma telgi oli üles löönud, Sekemi isa Hamori lastelt saja rahatüki eest.

20 Ja ta püstitas sinna altari ning pani sellele nimeks 'Jumal, Iisraeli Jumal'.

4502. And took Dinah out of Shechem’s house, and went forth. That this signifies that they took away the affection of truth, is evident from the representation of Dinah, as being the affection of truth (see above, n. 4498). It is according to the proximate internal sense that they took away the affection of truth from those who were of the remains of the Most Ancient Church, because it is said that they “took her out of Shechem’s house,” “Shechem’s house” signifying the good of the truth of that church. But as the subject treated of is the extirpation of truth and good among the descendants of Jacob who are here signified by his sons, and as all things are to be taken in application to the subject treated of, therefore by “Shechem’s house” is here signified simply the good of truth such as had existed with the man of the Most Ancient Church; and what is signified is that this was extinguished in the nation sprung from Jacob; for in the internal sense of the Word the signification of the names and words is determined by the subject to which they are applied; yet here there is at the same time signified the breaking down of the good and truth with Hamor and Shechem and his family, because they acceded to externals, as shown above (n. 4493).

[2] That what has thus far been unfolded about Simeon and Leviticus is really so, may be seen from the prophetic utterances of Jacob just before his death:

Simeon and Leviticus are brethren, instruments of violence are their swords; let not my soul come into their secret, in their congregation let not my glory be united, for in their anger they slew a man, and in their pleasure they unstrung an ox; cursed be their anger, for it was vehement, and their fury, for it was grievous; I will divide them in Jacob, and scatter them in Israel (Genesis 49:5-7);

by “Simeon and Levi” are signified the truth of faith which with the descendants of Jacob was turned into falsity, and the good of charity which was turned into evil (as shown above, n. 4499, 4500). They are called “brethren” because good is the brother of truth, or charity is the brother of faith (n. 4498). “Instruments of violence are their swords” signifies that falsities and evils inflicted violence on truths and goods (n. 4499). “Let not my soul come into their secret, in their congregation let not my glory be united” signifies disjunction as to life and doctrine, for in the Word “soul” is predicated of life (n. 1000, 1040, 1742, 3299), and “glory” of doctrine. “For in their anger they slew a man, and in their pleasure they unstrung an ox” signifies that in evil of set purpose they extinguished the truth of the church and the good of the church (for a “man” is the truth of the church, n. 3134, and an “ox” is its good, n. 2180, 2566, 2781). “Cursed be their anger, for it was vehement, and their fury, for it was grievous” signifies the penalty for turning away from truth and good (for “to curse” is to turn one’s self away, and also to be punished therefor, n. 245, 379, 1423, 3530, 3584; “anger” is a turning away from truth, and “fury,” from good, n. 357, 3614). “I will divide them in Jacob, and scatter them in Israel” signifies that goods and truths will no longer be in the external and the internal of their church (“to divide” and “to scatter” denote to separate and to extirpate from them, n. 4424; “Jacob” is the external of the church, and “Israel” the internal, n. 4286).

[3] These things were said of Simeon and Leviticus in that prophecy because by them is signified the truth and good of the church in general; but when these have become null and void, and still more when falsities and evils succeed in their place, the church is then extinct. That such is the meaning of these prophetic words is evident from the fact that the tribe of Simeon and the tribe of Leviticus were not cursed above the other tribes; for the tribe of Leviticus was taken for the priesthood, and the tribe of Simeon was among the other tribes of Israel as one of them.

3584. Cursed are they that curse thee. That this signifies that he who disjoins himself shall be disjoined; and that “blessed are they that bless thee” signifies that he who conjoins himself shall be conjoined, is evident from the signification of “being cursed” as being to be disjoined; and of “being blessed,” as being to be conjoined (n. 3504, 3514, 3530, 3565). These things are predicated of truths, and by “those who curse” are signified falsities which separate themselves from truths; and by “those who bless” are signified truths which adjoin themselves to other truths; for with truths and goods the case is that they form a society together, at last making as it were one city; and in such a manner they also consociate. This originates from the form of heaven, in which the angels are ranged in order according to the relationships and affinities of good and truth, and thus together constitute one kingdom or one city, from which truths and goods flow in with man, and are disposed in him into a similar form, and this by the Lord alone. But how the case herein is, will be more plainly evident from the correspondence of the Grand Man, which is heaven, with each and everything that is in man; which correspondence will of the Lord’s Divine mercy be described at the close of the chapters. From all this it is now evident what is involved in the blessing of Isaac pronounced to Jacob, but meant with respect to Esau; namely, the fructification of good through the multiplication of truth, and again the fructification of truth.
