Zechariah 10

Studimi

1 Ask· ye Jehovah ·for rain in the time of the later··rain; Jehovah shall make rain··clouds, and give them showers of rain, for each··man the herb in the field.

2 For the teraphim have spoken iniquity, and the diviners beheld falsity, and have spoken vain dreams; they comfort with vanity. Therefore they journeyed as a flock; they were afflicted, for there was no shepherd.

3 My anger was··fierce against the shepherds, and I visited it on the he-goats; for Jehovah of Armies has visited His drove, the house of Judah, and has set them as His majestic horse in the battle.

4 Out··of him came··forth the corner, out··of him the peg, out··of him the battle bow, out··of him every taskmaster together.

5 And they shall be as mighty men, who tread··down their enemies in the mud of the streets in the battle; and they shall fight, because Jehovah is with them, and they shall shame the riders on horses.

6 And I will make· the house of Judah ·mighty, and I will save the house of Joseph, and I will cause them to dwell; for I have··compassion on them; and they shall be as if I had not cast· them ·off: for I am Jehovah their God, and I will answer them.

7 And they of Ephraim shall be as a mighty··man, and their heart shall be··glad as through wine; and their sons shall see it, and be··glad; their heart shall rejoice in Jehovah.

8 I will whistle for them, and bring· them ·together; for I have redeemed them; and they shall multiply as they have multiplied.

9 And I will sow them among the people; and they shall remember Me in far··off countries; and they shall live with their sons, and return.

10 I will return them also out··of the land of Egypt, and bring· them ·together out··of Assyria; and I will bring them into the land of Gilead and Lebanon; and no more room shall be found for them.

11 And he shall pass··through the sea with adversity, and shall smite the waves in the sea, and all the depths of the Nile shall··dry··up; and the pride of Assyria shall be brought··down, and the scepter of Egypt shall turn··aside.

12 And I will make· them ·mighty in Jehovah; and they shall walk··forth in His name, says Jehovah.

310. In the spiritual sense murders mean all manners of killing and destroying human souls. These are of many and varied kinds, for instance, turning them away from God, religion and the worship of God, making these things the subject of scandal, and persuading people of things which cause them to be hated and rejected. Such are all the devils and satans in hell, and linked with them are those in this world who offer violence to and prostitute the holiness of the church. It is those who destroy souls by means of falsities who are meant by the king of the abyss, called 'Abaddon' or 'Apollyon', that is, the destroyer, in Revelation 9:11; and in the prophetic parts of the Word by 'the slain', as in these passages:

Jehovah God has said, Feed the sheep to be slain, which their owners slaughtered, Zechariah 11:4-5, 7.

We were slain all day long; we were considered sheep for slaughter, Psalms 44:22.

Jacob will cause those who are to come to take root; has he not been slain even as he slew others? Isaiah 27:6-7.

A thief 1 does not come except to steal and slaughter sheep; I have come so that they may have life and plenty, John 10:10.

There are further passages of this kind, such as Isaiah 14:21; 26:21; Ezekiel 37:9 2 ; Jeremiah 4:31; 12:3; Revelation 9:4-5; 11:7. This is why the devil is called 'a murderer from the beginning' (John 8:44).

Fusnotat:

1. The Latin text has 'a stranger', but this is corrected in the author's copy. The word 'sheep' has been added to the quotation.

2. This reference appears to be wrong; possibly is intended.
