¹ And there was a famine in the land, besides^◦ the first famine that was in the days of Abraham. And Isaac went to^▵ Abimelech king of the Philistines, to Gerar.

² And Jehovah appeared to^▵ him, and said, Go· not ·down into Egypt; inhabit the land of which I speak^◦ to^▵ thee.

³ Sojourn in this land, and I will be with thee, and will bless thee; for to thee, and to thy seed, I will give all these lands, and I will raise·​·up the promise which I promised to Abraham thy father.

⁴ And I will cause thy seed to be multiplied as the stars of the heavens, and will give to thy seed all these lands; and in thy seed shall all the nations of the earth be blessed,

⁵ because^▵ Abraham obeyed My voice, and kept My charge, My commandments, My statutes, and My laws.

⁶ And Isaac dwelt in Gerar.

⁷ And the men^◦ of the place asked him as·​·to his woman^*; and he said, She^◦ is my sister; for he feared to say, She is my woman; lest the men^◦ of the place should kill me on·​·account of Rebekah; because^◦ she^◦ was good in appearance.

⁸ And it was, because^◦ the days were there prolonged to him, that Abimelech king of the Philistines looked·​·out through a window, and saw, and behold Isaac was laughing with^◦ Rebekah his woman.

⁹ And Abimelech called Isaac, and said, Surely behold she^◦ is thy woman. And how^◦ saidst thou, She^◦ is my sister? And Isaac said to^▵ him, Because^◦ I said, Lest I die on·​·account·​·of her.

¹⁰ And Abimelech said, What is this thou hast done to us, in that one of the people might have lightly lain·​·down with^◦ thy woman, and thou wouldst have brought guilt upon us?

¹¹ And Abimelech commanded all the people, saying, He who touches this man^◦ and his woman, dying he shall die.

¹² And Isaac sowed in that^◦ land, and found in that^◦ year a hundred measures, and Jehovah blessed him.

¹³ And the man^◦ became·​·great, and went on going^◦ and becoming·​·great until that he became· very ·great.

¹⁴ And he had^◦ livestock of the flock, and livestock of the herd, and much service; and the Philistines were·​·envious of him.

¹⁵ And all the wells that his father’s servants dug in the days of Abraham his father, the Philistines blocked· them ·up, and filled them with dust.

¹⁶ And Abimelech said to^▵ Isaac, Go from with us; for thou art exceedingly more numerous than we.

¹⁷ And Isaac went thence, and encamped by the brook of Gerar, and dwelt there.

¹⁸ And Isaac returned, and dug again^* the wells of waters which they had dug in the days of Abraham his father; and the Philistines blocked· them ·up after the death of Abraham; and he called them by names according·​·to the names which his father called them.

¹⁹ And the servants of Isaac dug in the gully, and found there a well of living waters.

²⁰ And the shepherds of Gerar strove with Isaac’s shepherds, saying, The waters are ours; and he called the name of the well Esek, because^◦ they contended^◦ with him.

²¹ And they dug another well, and they strove over that also, and he called the name of it Sitnah^*.

²² And he moved·​·away from thence, and dug another well, and over it they strove not, and he called the name of it Rehoboth; and he said, For now Jehovah has made us to be enlarged, and we shall be·​·fruitful in the land.

²³ And he went·​·up from thence to Beer-sheba.

²⁴ And Jehovah appeared to^▵ him in that^◦ night, and said, I^▵ am the God of Abraham thy father; fear not, for I^▵ am with^◦ thee, and I will bless thee, and will multiply thy seed, on^◦ account·​·of Abraham My servant.

²⁵ And he built there an altar, and called upon^◦ the name of Jehovah, and stretched his tent there, and there the servants of Isaac dug·​·out a well.

²⁶ And Abimelech went^◦ to^▵ him from Gerar, and Ahuzzath his companion, and Phichol the commander^◦ of his army.

²⁷ And Isaac said to^▵ them, Wherefore have you come to^▵ me, and you^◦ have hated me, and have sent· me ·away from^◦ you.

²⁸ And they said, Seeing we have seen that Jehovah was with thee; and we said, We pray^◦ thee, let there be an oath between us, between us and thee, and let us cut a covenant with thee.

²⁹ If thou shalt do evil with us, as^◦ we have not touched thee, and as^◦ we have done only good with thee, and have sent· thee ·away in peace; thou^◦ art now the blessed of Jehovah.

³⁰ And he made for them a feast, and they did eat and drink.

³¹ And they got·​·up·​·early in the morning, and promised a man^◦ to his brother; and Isaac sent· them ·away, and they went from^◦ him in peace.

³² And it was, in that^◦ day, that the servants of Isaac came and told him concerning the matter^◦ of the well which they had dug; and they said to him, We have found waters.

³³ And he called it Shebah^*; therefore the name of the city is Beer-sheba^* even·​·to this day.

³⁴ And Esau was a son of forty years, and he took for a woman Jehudith, the daughter of Beeri the Hittite, and Basemath, the daughter of Elon the Hittite.

³⁵ And they were bitterness of spirit to Isaac and to Rebekah.

¹ And it was, after these words^*, that one said to Joseph, Behold, thy father is·​·sick; and he took his two sons with him, Manasseh and Ephraim.

² And one told Jacob, and said, Behold, thy son Joseph comes to^▵ thee; and Israel strengthened himself, and sat on the bed^◦.

³ And Jacob said to^▵ Joseph, God^◦ Shaddai was seen by me at Luz in the land of Canaan, and blessed me,

⁴ and He said to^▵ me, Behold I will make· thee ·fruitful, and will cause thee to be multiplied, and will give thee for an assembly of peoples; and I will give this land to thy seed after thee for an eternal possession^◦.

⁵ And now thy two sons, who were·​·born to thee in the land of Egypt, before I came to^▵ thee into Egypt, they^◦ are mine; Ephraim and Manasseh, as Reuben and Simeon, they shall be mine.

⁶ And thy begotten which thou begettest after them, shall be thine; on the name of their brothers they shall be called in their inheritance.

⁷ And I^◦, in my coming from Paddan, Rachel died on me in the land of Canaan, in the way, when there was still a tract of land to come toward Ephrath; and I buried her there in the way of Ephrath, this^◦ is Bethlehem.

⁸ And Israel saw the sons of Joseph, and said, Whose are these?

⁹ And Joseph said to^▵ his father, These^◦ are my sons, whom God has given me in this place. And he said, Take them, I pray^◦, to^▵ me, and I will bless them.

¹⁰ And the eyes of Israel were·​·heavy from being·​·old; he was· not ·able to see. And he presented them to^▵ him; and he kissed them and embraced them.

¹¹ And Israel said to^▵ Joseph, I did not judge^▵ to see thy face again; and behold, God has made me see thy seed also.

¹² And Joseph brought· them ·out from between his knees; and he bowed· himself ·down with his face^◦ to^▫ the earth.

¹³ And Joseph took the two of them, Ephraim in his right·​·hand on Israel’s left hand, and Manasseh in his left hand on Israel’s right·​·hand, and presented them to^▵ him.

¹⁴ And Israel put·​·forth^◦ his right·​·hand, and put it on the head of Ephraim, and he^◦ was the younger^▵, and his left hand on the head of Manasseh; he put·​·forth his hands crosswise^*, for Manasseh was the firstborn.

¹⁵ And he blessed Joseph, and said, The God before whom my fathers walked, Abraham and Isaac, the God who shepherds me as·​·long·​·as I am, even·​·until this day,

¹⁶ the Angel who redeems me from all evil, bless the lads; and let my name be called in them, and the name of my fathers Abraham and Isaac; and let them grow to a multitude in the midst^◦ of the earth.

¹⁷ And Joseph saw that his father put his right hand upon the head of Ephraim, and it was·​·evil in his eyes; and he held^◦ the hand of his father to remove it from on the head of Ephraim onto^◦ the head of Manasseh.

¹⁸ And Joseph said to^▵ his father, Not so, my father; for this is the firstborn; set thy right·​·hand on his head.

¹⁹ And his father refused, and said, I know, my son, I know; he^◦ also shall be for a people, and he^◦ also shall become·​·great; nevertheless his younger^◦ brother shall be·​·greater than he, and his seed shall be the fullness of the nations.

²⁰ And he blessed them on^◦ this^◦ day, saying, In thee shall Israel bless, saying, God set thee as Ephraim and as Manasseh; and he set Ephraim before Manasseh.

²¹ And Israel said to^▵ Joseph, Behold, I^▵ die; and God shall be with you, and shall return you to^▵ the land of your fathers.

²² And I^◦ give thee one portion^* above thy brothers, which I took out·​·of the hand of the Amorite with my sword and with my bow.
