1 Niin menivät Leviläisten ylimmäiset isät papin Eleatsarin ja Josuan Nunin pojan eteen, ja ylimmäisten isäin eteen Israelin lasten sukukunnissa,

2 Ja puhuttelivat heitä Silossa Kanaanin maalla ja sanoivat: Herra käski Moseksen kautta antaa meille kaupungeita asuaksemme, ja niiden esikaupungit meidän karjallemme.

3 Niin antoivat Israelin lapset Leviläisille perinnöstänsä, Herran käskyn jälkeen, nämät kaupungit esikaupunkeinensa:

4 Ja arpa lankesi Kahatilaisten sukukunnille: ja papin Aaronin lapset Leviläisistä saivat arvalla Juudan sukukunnalta, Simeonin sukukunnalta ja BenJaminin sukukunnalta kolmetoistakymmentä kaupunkia.

5 Vaan muille Kahatin lapsille tuli arvalla Ephraimin sukukunnalta, Danin sukukunnalta ja puolelta Manassen sukukunnalta kymmenen kaupunkia.

6 Gersonin lapsille tuli arvalla Isaskarin sukukunnalta, Asserin sukukunnalta, Naphtalin sukukunnalta ja puolelta Manassen sukukunnalta Basanissa kolmetoistakymmentä kaupunkia.

7 Merarin lapset sukuinsa jälkeen saivat Rubenin sukukunnalta, Gadin sukukunnalta ja Zebulonin sukukunnalta kaksitoistakymmentä kaupunkia.

8 Ja niin antoivat Israelin lapset Leviläisille arvalla nämät kaupungit esikaupunkeinensa, niinkuin Herra Moseksen kautta käskenyt oli.

9 Juudan lasten sukukunnalta ja Simeonin lasten sukukunnalta annettiin nämät kaupungit, jotka he nimittivät nimeltänsä,

10 Aaronin pojille Kahatilaisten suvusta Levin pojista; sillä ensimäinen arpa oli heidän.

11 Niin antoivat he heille KirjatArban, (Arba oli Enakin isä), se on Hebron, Juudan vuorella, ja esikaupungit ympäristöltä.

12 Mutta kaupungin pellon kylinensä antoivat he Kalebille Jephunnen pojalle perinnöksi.

13 Niin antoivat he papin Aaronin lapsille miehentappajain vapaakaupungin Hebronin esikaupunkeinensa ja Libnan esikaupunkeinensa,

14 Jatirin esikaupunkeinensa ja Estmoan esikaupunkeinensa,

15 Holonin esikaupunkeinensa ja Debirin esikaupunkeinensa,

16 Ain esikaupunkeinensa, Juttan esikaupunkeinensa ja BetSemeksen esikaupunkeinensa: yhdeksän kaupunkia niiltä kahdelta sukukunnalta;

17 BenJaminin sukukunnalta Gibeonin esikaupunkeinensa ja Geban esikaupunkeinensa,

18 Anatotin esikaupunkeinensa ja Almonin esikaupunkeinensa: neljä kaupunkia.

19 Kaikki pappein Aaronin poikain kaupungit olivat kolmetoistakymmentä ja niiden esikaupungit.

20 Mutta muut Kahatin lasten sukukunnat, Leviläiset, Kahatin sikiät saivat kaupunkia arvallansa Ephraimin sukukunnalta.

21 Ja he antoivat heille miehentappajan vapaakaupungin Sikemin esikaupunkeinensa Ephraimin vuorella ja Getserin esikaupunkeinensa,

22 Kibtsaimin esikaupunkeinensa ja BetHoronin esikaupunkeinensa: neljä kaupunkia;

23 Ja Danin sukukunnalta Elteken esikaupunkeinensa ja Gibtonin esikaupunkeinensa,

24 Ajalonin esikaupunkeinensa, GatRimmonin esikaupunkeinensa: neljä kaupunkia;

25 Puolelta Manassen sukukunnalta Thaanakin esikaupunkeinensa ja GatRimmonin esikaupunkeinensa: kaksi kaupunkia.

26 Kaikki muiden Kahatin lasten sukukuntain kaupungit olivat kymmenen ja niiden esikaupungit.

27 Gersonin lapsille Leviläisten sukukunnasta annettiin puolelta Manassen sukukunnalta miehentappajan vapaakaupunki Golan Basanissa esikaupunkeinensa ja Beestera esikaupunkeinensa: kaksi kaupunkia;

28 Isaskarin sukukunnalta Kision esikaupunkeinensa, Dabrat esikaupunkeinensa,

29 Jarmut esikaupunkeinensa ja EnGannim esikaupunkeinensa: neljä kaupunkia;

30 Asserin sukukunnalta Miseal esikaupunkeinensa, Abdon esikaupunkeinensa,

31 Helkat esikaupunkeinensa ja Rehob esikaupunkeinensa: neljä kaupunkia;

32 Naphtalin sukukunnalta miehentappajan vapaakaupunki Gedes Galileassa esikaupunkeinensa ja HammotDor esikaupunkeinensa, Kartan esikaupunkeinensa: kolme kaupunkia.

33 Kaikki Gersonilaisten sukukuntain kaupungit olivat kolmetoistakymmentä ja niiden esikaupungit.

34 Merarin lapsille, toisille Leviläisille, annettiin Sebulonin sukukunnalta Jokneam esikaupunkeinensa ja Kartta esikaupunkeinensa,

35 Dimna esikaupunkeinensa, Nahalal esikaupunkeinensa: neljä kaupunkia,

36 Rubenin sukukunnalta Betser esikaupunkeinensa ja Jaksa esikaupunkeinensa,

37 Kedemot esikaupunkeinensa ja Mephaat esikaupunkeinensa: neljä kaupunkia;

38 Gadin sukukunnalta miehentappajan vapaakaupunki Ramot Gileadissa esikaupunkeinensa ja Mahanaim esikaupunkeinensa,

39 Hesbon esikaupunkeinensa ja Jaeser esikaupunkeinensa: kaikki neljä kaupunkia.

40 Kaikki toisten Leviläisten Merarin lasten kaupungit, heidän suvussansa arpansa jälkeen, olivat kaksitoistakymmentä.

41 Kaikki Leviläisten kaupungit Israelin lasten perinnön seassa olivat kahdeksanviidettäkymmentä ja niiden esikaupungit.

42 Ja itsekullakin kaupungilla oli hänen esikaupunkinsa ympäristöllänsä, niin oli niillä kaikilla kaupungeilla.

43 Ja niin antoi Herra Israelin lapsille kaiken sen maan, jonka hän vannoi heidän isillensä antaaksensa; ja he omistivat sen ja asuivat siinä.

44 Ja Herra antoi heille levon kaikella heidän ympäristöllänsä, niinkuin hän vannoi heidän isillensä; ja ei yksikään heidän vihollisistansa seisonut heitä vastaan, vaan kaikki heidän vihollisensa antoi Herra heidän käsiinsä.

2909. 'In Kiriath Arba, which is Hebron in the land of Canaan' means within the Church. This becomes clear from the meaning of 'Kiriath Arba' as the Church as regards truth, and from the meaning of 'Hebron in the land of Canaan' as the Church as regards good. In the Word, especially the prophetical part, whenever truth is the subject, good also is included, on account of the heavenly marriage that exists in every detail of the Word, see 683, 793, 801, 2173, 2516, 2712. Here therefore when Kiriath Arba is mentioned, so also is 'Hebron in the land of Canaan'. The land of Canaan is the Lord's kingdom, 1413, 1437, 1607, and locations in that land were in varying ways representative, 1585, 1866.

[2] As regards 'Kiriath Arba, which is Hebron', this was a region where Abraham, Isaac and Jacob dwelt. Abraham's dwelling there is evident from what has gone before,

Abraham came and dwelt in [the oak-groves of] Mamre, which are in Hebron. Genesis 13:18.

And Isaac and Jacob's dwelling there too is evident from what comes further on, Jacob came to Isaac his father in Mamre, to Kiriath Arba, which is Hebron, where Abraham and Isaac sojourned. Genesis 35:27.

Joseph was sent by Jacob his father to his brothers, from the Valley of Hebron. Genesis 37:14.

From the representation dealt with already of those three personages it is clear that 'Kiriath Arba, which is Hebron' represented the Church before Jerusalem did so.

[3] In the course of time every Church deteriorates until it ceases to possess any faith or charity at all, at which point it is destroyed. This too was represented by 'Kiriath Arba, which is Hebron', that is to say, when this place was occupied by the Anakim, by whom dreadful false persuasions were meant, 581, 1673, regarding which occupation by the Anakim, see Numbers 13:21-22; Joshua 11:21; 14:15; 15:13-14; Judges 1:10. As regards the end or close of the Church and its destruction, this was represented by Joshua's utterly destroying everything in that place, Joshua 10:36-37; 11:21, and by Judah and Caleb's smiting the Anakim, Judges 1:10; Joshua 14:13-15; 15:13-14. The establishment again of a new Church was represented by the allotment of its fields and villages to Caleb as his inheritance, Joshua 21:12. The city itself however became a city of refuge, Joshua 20:7; 21:13, and a city for priests, for the sons of Aaron, Joshua 21:10-11, within the inheritance of Judah, Joshua 15:54.

[4] From this it is evident that Hebron represented the Lord's spiritual Church in the land of Canaan. For the same reason also David was ordered by Jehovah's command to go to Hebron and was there anointed king over the house of Judah; and after he had reigned there for seven years and six months he went to Jerusalem and took possession of Zion, see 2 Samuel 2:1-11; 5:5; 1 Kings 2:11, at which point the Lord's spiritual Church now began to be represented by Jerusalem, and His celestial Church by Zion.

1 It happened after the death of Saul, when David was returned from the slaughter of the Amalekites, and David had stayed two days in Ziklag;

2 it happened on the third day, that behold, a man came out of the camp from Saul, with his clothes torn, and earth on his head: and so it was, when he came to David, that he fell to the earth, and did obeisance.

3 David said to him, "Where do you come from?" He said to him, "I have escaped out of the camp of Israel."

4 David said to him, "How did it go? Please tell me." He answered, "The people have fled from the battle, and many of the people also have fallen and are dead; and Saul and Jonathan his son are dead also."

5 David said to the young man who told him, "How do you know that Saul and Jonathan his son are dead?"

6 The young man who told him said, "As I happened by chance on Mount Gilboa, behold, Saul was leaning on his spear; and behold, the chariots and the horsemen followed hard after him.

7 When he looked behind him, he saw me, and called to me. I answered, 'Here I am.'

8 He said to me, 'Who are you?' I answered him, 'I am an Amalekite.'

9 He said to me, 'Please stand beside me, and kill me; for anguish has taken hold of me, because my life is yet whole in me.'

10 So I stood beside him, and killed him, because I was sure that he could not live after that he had fallen. I took the crown that was on his head, and the bracelet that was on his arm, and have brought them here to my lord."

11 Then David took hold on his clothes, and tore them; and likewise all the men who were with him.

12 They mourned, and wept, and fasted until evening, for Saul, and for Jonathan his son, and for the people of Yahweh, and for the house of Israel; because they were fallen by the sword.

13 David said to the young man who told him, "Where are you from?" He answered, "I am the son of a foreigner, an Amalekite."

14 David said to him, "How were you not afraid to put forth your hand to destroy Yahweh's anointed?"

15 David called one of the young men, and said, "Go near, and fall on him." He struck him, so that he died.

16 David said to him, "Your blood be on your head; for your mouth has testified against you, saying, 'I have slain Yahweh's anointed.'"

17 David lamented with this lamentation over Saul and over Jonathan his son

18 (and he commanded them to teach the children of Judah [the song of] the bow: behold, it is written in the book of Jashar):

19 "Your glory, Israel, is slain on your high places! How the mighty have fallen!

20 Don't tell it in Gath. Don't publish it in the streets of Ashkelon, lest the daughters of the Philistines rejoice, lest the daughters of the uncircumcised triumph.

21 You mountains of Gilboa, let there be no dew nor rain on you, neither fields of offerings; For there the shield of the mighty was vilely cast away, The shield of Saul was not anointed with oil.

22 From the blood of the slain, from the fat of the mighty, Jonathan's bow didn't turn back. Saul's sword didn't return empty.

23 Saul and Jonathan were lovely and pleasant in their lives. In their death, they were not divided. They were swifter than eagles. They were stronger than lions.

24 You daughters of Israel, weep over Saul, who clothed you in scarlet delicately, who put ornaments of gold on your clothing.

25 How are the mighty fallen in the midst of the battle! Jonathan is slain on your high places.

26 I am distressed for you, my brother Jonathan. You have been very pleasant to me. Your love to me was wonderful, passing the love of women.

27 How are the mighty fallen, and the weapons of war perished!"
