Daniel 7

1 I den babyloniske konungen Belsassars första regeringsår hade Daniel en dröm och såg en syn på sitt läger. Sedan tecknade han upp drömmen och meddelade huvudsumman av dess innehåll.

2 Detta är Daniels berättelse: Jag hade en syn om natten, och såg i den huru himmelens fyra vindar stormade fram mot det stora havet.

3 Och fyra stora djur stego upp ur havet, det ena icke likt det andra.

4 Det första liknade ett lejon, men det hade vingar såsom en örn. Medan jag ännu såg härpå, rycktes vingarna av djuret, och det restes upp från jorden, så att det blev ställt på två fötter såsom en människa, och ett mänskligt hjärta blev givet åt det.

5 Sedan fick jag se ännu ett djur, det andra i ordningen; det var likt en björn, och det reste upp sin ena sida, och det hade tre revben i sitt gap, mellan tänderna. Och till det djuret blev så sagt: »Stå upp och sluka mycket kött.»

6 Därefter fick jag se ett annat djur, som liknade en panter, men på sina sidor hade det fyra fågelvingar; och djuret hade fyra huvuden, och välde blev givet åt det.

7 Därefter fick jag i min syn om natten se ett fjärde djur, övermåttan förskräckligt, fruktansvärt och starkt; det hade stora tänder av järn, det uppslukade och krossade, och vad som blev kvar trampade det under fötterna; det var olikt alla de förra djuren och hade tio horn.

8 Men under det att jag betraktade hornen, fick jag se huru mellan dem ett annat horn sköt upp, ett litet, för vilket tre av de förra hornen blevo bortstötta; och se, det hornet hade ögon lika människoögon, och en mun som talade stora ord.

9 Medan jag ännu såg härpå, blevo troner framsatta, och en som var gammal satte sig ned. Hans klädnad var snövit, och håret på hans huvud var såsom ren ull; hans tron var av eldslågor, och hjulen därpå voro av flammande eld.

10 En flod av eld strömmade ut från honom, tusen gånger tusen voro hans tjänare, och tio tusen gånger tio tusen stodo där till hans tjänst. Så satte man sig ned till doms, och böcker blevo upplåtna.

11 Medan jag nu såg härpå, skedde det att, för de stora ords skull som hornet talade -- medan jag ännu såg härpå -- djuret dödades och dess kropp förstördes och kastades i elden för att brännas upp.

12 Från de övriga djuren togs ock deras välde, ty deras livslängd var bestämd till tid och stund.

13 Sedan fick jag, i min syn om natten, se huru en som liknade en människoson kom med himmelens skyar; och han nalkades den gamle och fördes fram inför honom.

14 Åt denne gavs välde och ära och rike, och alla folk och stammar och tungomål måste tjäna honom. Hans välde är ett evigt välde, som icke skall tagas ifrån honom, och hans rike skall icke förstöras.

15 Då kände jag, Daniel, min ande oroas i sin boning, och den syn som jag hade haft förskräckte mig.

16 Jag gick fram till en av dem som stodo där och bad honom om en tillförlitlig förklaring på allt detta Och han svarade mig och sade mig uttydningen därpå:

17 »De fyra stora djuren betyda att fyra konungar skola uppstå på jorden.

18 Men sedan skola den Högstes heliga undfå riket och taga det i besittning för evig tid, ja, för evigheters evighet

19 Därefter ville jag hava tillförlitlig förklaring angående det fjärde djuret, som var olikt alla de andra, det som var så övermåttan förskräckligt och hade tänder av järn och klor av koppar, det som uppslukade och krossade och sedan trampade under fötterna vad som blev kvar;

20 så ock angående de tio hornen på dess huvud, och angående det nya hornet, det som sedan sköt upp, och för vilket tre andra föllo av, det hornet som hade Ögon, och en mun som talade stora ord, det som var större att skåda än de övriga,

21 det hornet som jag ock hade sett; föra krig mot de heliga och bliva dem övermäktigt,

22 till dess att den gamle kom och rätt blev skipad åt den Högstes heliga och tiden var inne, då de heliga fingo taga riket i besittning.

23 Då svarade han så: »Det fjärde djuret betyder att ett fjärde rike skall uppstå på jorden, ett som är olikt alla de andra rikena. Det skall uppsluka hela jorden och förtrampa och krossa den.

24 Och de tio hornen betyda att tio konungar skola uppstå i det riket; och efter dem skall uppstå en annan, som skall vara olik de förra, och som skall slå ned tre konungar.

25 Och denne skall upphäva sitt tal mot den Högste och föröda den Högstes heliga; han skall sätta sig i sinnet att förändra heliga tider och lagar; och de skola givas i hans hand under en tid, och tider, och en halv tid.

26 Men dom skall bliva hållen, och hans välde skall tagas ifrån honom och fördärvas och förgöras i grund.

27 Men rike och välde och storhet, utöver alla riken under himmelen, skall givas åt den Högstes heligas folk. Dess rike skall vara ett evigt rike, och alla välden skola tjäna och lyda det.»

28 Här slutar berättelsen. Men jag, Daniel, uppfylldes av många oroliga tankar, och färgen vek bort ifrån mitt ansikte; men jag bevarade i mitt hjärta vad som hade hänt.

194. And thou shalt not know what hour I will come upon thee. That this signifies man's ignorance of that time, and of his state then, is evident from the signification of hour, as being the time when man is to die, and also his state at the time; and from the signification of not knowing it, as being ignorant. It is said, what hour I will come upon thee, namely, as a thief; and in the sense of the letter is hereby meant that the Lord would thus come, but in the spiritual sense it is meant that evils and falsities would steal the knowledges which they have from the Word; for, in the sense of the letter of the Word, it is attributed to Jehovah, or the Lord, that He does evil, but, in the spiritual sense it is meant that He does evil to no one, but that man does evil to himself (as may be seen, Arcana Coelestia 2447, 5798, 6071, 6991, 6997, 7533, 7632, 7643, 7877, 7679, 7710, 7926, 8227, 8228, 8284, 8483, 8632, 9010, 9128, 9306, 10431).

[2] The reason why hour also signifies state is, because in the Word all times, as a day, a week, a month, a year, an age, signify states of life, and hence hour has a similar signification. (The cause of this may be seen in the work, Heaven and Hell 162-169, where time in heaven is treated of.)

But because hour signifies both time and state, therefore, where hour is mentioned in the Word it may to some extent be known that something other than time is signified by it.

In Matthew:

A householder hired labourers into his vineyard, who, laboured from the third hour, the sixth, the ninth, and the eleventh, and received an equal reward (Matthew 20:1-17).

By these hours in the world are meant times, but in heaven states of the life, because there are no hours in heaven, as times there are not measurable, and divided into days, and these into hours, as in the world, therefore instead of these they there perceive the states of the life of those who die, whether old, young, youths or children, who have alike procured to themselves spiritual life. To labour in the vineyard, denotes the procuring of spiritual life by means of knowledges of good and truth from the Word applied to the uses of life. (That a vineyard in the Word signifies the spiritual church, and spiritual life pertaining to man, may be seen, Arcana Coelestia 3220, 9139.) By the third, the sixth, and the ninth hours similar states of life are signified; for all numbers in the Word are significative, and those numbers have a similar signification. Three signifies a full state, or what is complete even to the end (see n. 2788, 4495, 7715, 8347, 9825). The like is signified by six and nine; but the number eleven signifies a state not yet full, but yet a state of reception, such as that of well-disposed children and infants. The twelfth hour up to which they all laboured, signifies truths and goods in their fulness (see n. 577, 2089, 2129, 2130, 3272, 3858, 3913. That all numbers in the Word are significative, see n. 4495, 4670, 5265, 6175, 9488, 9659, 10217, 10253; and that multiplied numbers have a similar signification to the simple numbers from which they arise by multiplication, hence three, six, and nine have a similar signification, see n. 5291, 5335, 5708, 7973).

[3] Since twelve signifies truths and goods in their fulness, and thus a state of light or of man's intelligence therefrom, the Lord says,

"Are there not twelve hours in the day? If any one walk in the day, he stumbleth not" (John 11:9).

In other places, also by hours are signified states of life, as in the Apocalypse:

"The four angels were loosed, which were prepared for an hour, and a day, and a month, and a year, to slay the third part of men" (9:15).

By the times here mentioned are meant states of evil in men, as will be seen when we come to the explanation of those words.

From these considerations it is now evident that by, Thou shalt not know in what hour I will come upon thee, is meant man's ignorance not only of the time of his death, but also of the state of his life at that time, which state remains to eternity; for according to the quality of the state of man's past life even to the end of it, such he remains to eternity.

[4] Similar things are frequently said by the Lord in the Evangelists, as in Matthew:

"Ye know not in what hour your Lord doth come; be ye also ready; for in such an hour as ye think not, the Son of man shall come" (24:42, 44).

Again:

"The lord of the servant shall come in a day when he looketh not for him, and in an hour that he is not aware of" (24:50).

And again:

"Watch therefore, for ye know neither the day nor the hour wherein the Son of man shall come" (25:13).

It must be known that a man remains to eternity such as the quality of his whole life has been to the end, and not at all such as he is at the hour of death; for repentance then in the case of the evil is of no avail, but with the good it confirms the state.

4007. 'Every one that had white in it' means that which has truth in it. This is clear from the meaning of 'white' as truth, but strictly speaking as the Lord's Righteousness and Merit, and from this the Lord's righteousness and merit as these exist with man, dealt with in 3301, 3993. 'White' has that meaning because the light of heaven which radiates from the Lord, a light which is the source of splendour and brightness, means truth. Anything therefore on which that light falls and is made splendid and bright is that which is called the Lord's righteousness and merit existing with man. Those who acknowledge this, the Lord's righteousness, and who from good take it to themselves and reject their own, are specifically the ones meant by 'the righteous' whom the Lord refers to, in Matthew,

The righteous will shine like the sun in the kingdom of their Father. Matthew 13:43.

[2] The fact that that which is 'white', being splendid and bright, has this meaning is also evident from other places in the Word, as in Moses,

His eyes will be redder than wine, and his teeth whiter than milk. Genesis 49:12.

This refers to Judah, who represents the Lord as regards the Divinity of His Love, and in the internal sense the celestial kingdom, and so the celestial man, see 3881. 'Eyes redder than wine' means Divine Wisdom, and 'teeth whiter than milk' means Righteousness. In David,

You will purify me with hyssop and I shall be clean; You will wash me, and I shall become whiter than snow. Psalms 51:7.

'Washing and becoming whiter than snow' stands for being purified from sins by means of receiving and putting on the Lord's righteousness. In John,

In the midst of the seven lampstands one like the Son of Man. His head and hair were white, like white wool, like snow; and his eyes were like a flame of fire. Revelation 1:13-14.

You have a few names in Sardis, who have not soiled their garments, and they will walk with Me in white, for they are worthy. He who conquers will be clad in white garments. Revelation 3:4-5.

In the same book,

I counsel you to buy from Me gold purified in fire, that you may be rich, and white garments to clothe you. Revelation 3:18.

In the same book,

To each soul under the altar were given white robes. Revelation 6:9, 11.

In the same book,

I saw, standing before the throne and before the Lamb those clothed in white robes. One of the elders said to me, These clothed in white robes - who are they, and where have they come from? I said to him, Sir, you know. He said to me, These are they who are coming out of the great tribulation, and have washed their robes, and have made their robes white in the blood of the Lamb. Revelation 7:9, 13-14.

In the same book,

The angels were clothed in linen, white and splendid, and were girded around their breasts with golden girdles. Revelation 15:6.

In the same book,

I saw, and behold, a white horse, and he who sat on it had a bow; to him a crown was given. Revelation 6:2.

And elsewhere,

After this I saw heaven opened, and behold, a white horse. His armies in heaven were following Him on white horses and were clothed in linen white and clean. Revelation 19:11, 14.

[4] In all these places 'white' means the truth of faith; 'white garments' and 'white robes' have no other meaning. But the truth of faith does not exist with any who believe that they have faith of themselves and so believe that they are wise of themselves. Rather, it exists with those who believe that their faith and wisdom come from the Lord, for faith and wisdom are imparted to them because they do not ascribe any truth or good at all to themselves. Even less do they believe that they possess any merit through the truths and goods residing with them, and less still any righteousness, but only by ascribing these to the Lord, and so everything to His grace and mercy. This is what 'putting on white garments' means, and also what 'being made white in the blood of the Lamb' means. There are two things which all who enter heaven cast aside, namely their proprium and consequent confidence, and merit that is their own or self-righteousness. Then they assume a heavenly proprium which comes from the Lord, and the Lord's merit or righteousness. And to the extent that these are so assumed those persons advance further into heaven. These two things specifically are meant by 'red' and by 'white'; 'red' means the good of love and is present with those people at that time, 'white' the truth of faith.
