1 Después de estas cosas vino la palabra del SEÑOR a Abram en visión, diciendo: No temas, Abram; yo soy tu escudo, y tu galardón será sobremanera grande.

2 Y respondió Abram: Señor DIOS ¿qué me has de dar, siendo así que yo ando solo, y el mayordomo de mi casa es el damasceno Eliezer?

3 Dijo más Abram: He aquí no me has dado simiente, y he aquí el hijo de mi casa me hereda.

4 Y luego la palabra del SEÑOR vino a él diciendo: No te heredará éste, sino el que saldrá de tus entrañas, aquél te heredará.

5 Y le sacó fuera, y dijo: Mira ahora a los cielos, y cuenta las estrellas, si las puedes contar. Y le dijo: Así será tu simiente.

6 Y creyó al SEÑOR, y se lo contó por justicia.

7 Y le dijo: Yo soy el SEÑOR, que te saqué de Ur de los caldeos, para darte a heredar esta tierra.

8 Y él respondió: Señor DIOS ¿en qué conoceré que la tengo de heredar?

9 Y le dijo: Apártame una becerra de tres años, y una cabra de tres años, y un carnero de tres años, una tórtola también, y un palomino.

10 Y tomó él todas estas cosas, y las partió por la mitad, y puso cada mitad una enfrente de otra; mas no partió las aves.

11 Y descendían aves sobre los cuerpos muertos, y las ojeaba Abram.

12 Y fue que poniéndose el sol cayó sueño sobre Abram, y he aquí que un temor, una oscuridad grande cayó sobre él.

13 Entonces dijo a Abram: Ten por cierto que tu simiente será peregrina en tierra no suya, y les servirán, y serán afligidos cuatrocientos años.

14 Mas también a la gente a quien servirán, juzgo yo; y después de esto saldrán con grande riqueza.

15 Y tú vendrás a tus padres en paz, y serás sepultado en buena vejez.

16 Y en la cuarta generación volverán acá; porque aun no está cumplida la maldad del amorreo hasta aquí.

17 Y sucedió que puesto el sol, y hubo una oscuridad, y he aquí un horno de humo, y una antorcha de fuego que pasó por entre las mitades.

18 Aquel día hizo el SEÑOR pacto con Abram diciendo: A tu simiente daré esta tierra desde el río de Egipto hasta el río grande, el río Eufrates;

19 al cineo, y al cenezeo, y al cadmoneo,

20 al heteo, y al ferezeo, y al rafeo,

21 y al amorreo, y al cananeo, y al gergeseo, y al jebuseo.

1825. That “three years old” involves all things of the church as to times and states, is evident from the signification of “three” in the Word. By “three” is signified the full time of the church, from its origin even to its end, and thus all its state. The last time of the church is therefore signified by the third day, the third week, the third month, the third year and the third age, which are all the same. As the state of the church is signified by the number three, so also is the state of everyone who is a church, and everything which is of the church, as may be seen from the signification of this number in the passages adduced from the Word (n. 720, 901).

[2] That “a heifer of three years” thus signifies the time or state of the church even to the last, that is, when it has been vastated or made desolate, may also be seen in Isaiah:

My heart crieth out upon Moab; her fugitives are unto Zoar, a heifer of three years old; for by the ascent of Luhith, with weeping he shall go up in it; for in the way of Horonaim they shall raise up a cry of breaking to pieces (Isaiah 15:5).

Also in Jeremiah:

Gladness and exultation are gathered from Carmel, and from the land of Moab; and I will make 1 wine to cease from the winepresses; none shall tread with shouting; the shouting shall be no shouting. From the cry of Heshbon even unto Elealeh, even unto Jahaz have they uttered their voice, from Zoar even unto 2 Horonaim, a heifer of three years old; for the waters of Nimrim also shall become desolations (Jeremiah 48:33-34).

No one could possibly perceive what these things mean unless he knew what is signified by “Moab,” by “Zoar,” “the ascent of Luhith,” “the cry of Heshbon unto Elealeh,” by “Jahaz,” by “Horonaim,” “the waters of Nimrim,” and by “a heifer three years old.” That this is an uttermost vastation is plain.

8328. 'The place for You to dwell in' means where the Lord is. This is clear from the meaning of 'the place' as a state, dealt with just above in 8325, at this point a state of good originating in the Divine since it is used to mean heaven; and from the meaning of 'Jehovah's dwelling-place' or 'for You to dwell in' as where the Lord is. For 'dwelling in' has reference to good, see 2712, 3613; 'Jehovah's dwelling-place' means good and consequently heaven, 8269, 8309; and 'Jehovah' in the Word means the Lord, see above in 8261. The Lord refers many times to 'the Father who is in the heavens', and when He does so the Divine within heaven is meant, and so the good from which heaven exists. Considered by Himself the Divine is above the heavens; but the Divine within the heavens is the Good present within the Truth that emanates from the Divine. This is what 'Father in the heavens' is used to mean, in Matthew,

... so that you may be sons of the Father who is in the heavens.... so that you may be perfect, as your Father who is in the heavens is perfect. Matthew 5:44, 48; 6:1.

Our Father who is in the heavens, may Your name be kept holy. Matthew 6:9. ... he who does the will of the Father who is in the heavens. Matthew 7:21.

And in addition, Matthew 10:32-33; 16:17; 18:10, 14, 19.

[2] The Divine within the heavens is Good within Divine Truth which emanates from the Lord; but the Divine above the heavens is Divine Good itself. 'The place for You to dwell in' means heaven where Divine Truth emanating from the Lord resides; for this Truth composes heaven and is meant by 'Father in the heavens', and it exists there as the good which constitutes the life of those who are in heaven. Light may be shed on this, on how Divine Truth which emanates from the Lord becomes good in heaven, by comparison with the sun and the light radiating from it. Inwardly the sun is fire, but the radiation from the sun is light. This light holds within itself heat which causes gardens to grow and become paradise-like. The actual fire of the sun does not pass over to the planet, for it would scorch and burn everything up; rather, light in which heat is present flows from the fire of the sun. In the spiritual sense that light is Divine Truth, its heat is the good within Truth springing from Divine Good, and the paradise it produces is heaven.
