1 Subiu, pois, Abrão do Egito para o Negebe, levando sua mulher e tudo o que tinha, e Ló o acompanhava.

2 Abrão era muito rico em gado, em prata e em ouro.

3 Nas suas jornadas subiu do Negebe para Betel, até o lugar onde outrora estivera a sua tenda, entre Betel e Ai,

4 até o lugar do altar, que dantes ali fizera; e ali invocou Abrão o nome do Senhor.

5 E também Ló, que ia com Abrão, tinha rebanhos, gado e tendas.

6 Ora, a terra não podia sustentá-los, para eles habitarem juntos; porque os seus bens eram muitos; de modo que não podiam habitar juntos.

7 Pelo que houve contenda entre os pastores do gado de Abrão, e os pastores do gado de Ló. E nesse tempo os cananeus e os perizeus habitavam na terra.

8 Disse, pois, Abrão a Ló: Ora, não haja contenda entre mim e ti, e entre os meus pastores e os teus pastores, porque somos irmãos.

9 Porventura não está toda a terra diante de ti? Rogo-te que te apartes de mim. Se tu escolheres a esquerda, irei para a direita; e se a direita escolheres, irei eu para a esquerda.

10 Então Ló levantou os olhos, e viu toda a planície do Jordão, que era toda bem regada (antes de haver o Senhor destruído Sodoma e Gomorra), e era como o jardim do Senhor, como a terra do Egito, até chegar a Zoar.

11 E Ló escolheu para si toda a planície do Jordão, e partiu para o oriente; assim se apartaram um do outro.

12 Habitou Abrão na terra de Canaã, e Ló Habitou nas cidades da planície, e foi armando as suas tendas até chegar a Sodoma.

13 Ora, os homens de Sodoma eram maus e grandes pecadores contra o Senhor.

14 E disse o Senhor a Abrão, depois que Ló se apartou dele: Levanta agora os olhos, e olha desde o lugar onde estás, para o norte, para o sul, para o oriente e para o ocidente;

15 porque toda esta terra que vês, te hei de dar a ti, e à tua descendência, para sempre.

16 E farei a tua descendência como o pó da terra; de maneira que se puder ser contado o pó da terra, então também poderá ser contada a tua descendência.

17 Levanta-te, percorre esta terra, no seu comprimento e na sua largura; porque a darei a ti.

18 Então mudou Abrão as suas tendas, e foi habitar junto dos carvalhos de Manre, em Hebrom; e ali edificou um altar ao Senhor.

635. Lastly I will reveal this secret. Seven chapters of Revelation describe the termination of the present church, in terms similar to the devastation of Egypt. In both cases this was by similar plagues, each of which stands in the spiritual sense for some falsity advancing its devastation to the point of destruction. This church, therefore, which is at the present time lost, is also called Egypt as spiritually understood (Revelation 11:8). The plagues in Egypt were as follows.

The waters were turned to blood, so that all the fish died and the river stank (Exodus 7; similar language in Revelation 8:8; 16:3). Blood means Divine truth falsified (see Apocalypse Revealed 379, 404, 681, 687-688). The fish that died mean likewise truths in the natural man (Apocalypse Revealed 290, 405).

Frogs came forth upon the land of Egypt (Exodus 8). There is also a mention of frogs in Revelation 16:13. Frogs mean reasonings as a result of a longing for the falsification of truth (see Apocalypse Revealed 702).

In Egypt foul ulcers appeared upon men and beasts (Exodus 9); similar language in Revelation 16:2. Ulcers mean inward evils and falsities which can destroy the good and truth in the church (see Apocalypse Revealed 678).

In Egypt hail fell mixed with fire (Exodus 9); similar language in Revelation 8:7; 16:21. Hail means hellish falsity (see Apocalypse Revealed 399, 714).

Locusts were sent upon Egypt (Exodus 10); similar language in Revelation 9:1-11. Locusts mean falsities in outermost things (see Apocalypse Revealed 424, 430).

Oppressive darkness was brought upon Egypt (Exodus 10:21); similar language in Revelation 8:12. Darkness means falsities arising from ignorance, or from false ideas of religion, or from evil living (see Apocalypse Revealed 110, 413, 695).

The Egyptians finally perished in the sea of Suph 1 (Exodus 14). In Revelation the dragon and the false prophet perished in the lake of fire and brimstone (Revelation 19:20; 20:10). Both the sea of Suph and that lake have the same meaning, hell.

The reason why similar language is used of Egypt and of the church, the termination and end of which is described in Revelation, is that Egypt stands for the church, which in its beginnings was outstanding. So before its church was devastated, Egypt is equated with the Garden of Eden and the garden of Jehovah (Genesis 13:10; Ezekiel 31:8). It is also called 'the corner-stone of the tribes', and 'the sons of wise men and of the kings of ancient time' (Isaiah 19:11, 13). More about Egypt in its earliest state and in its devastation will be found in Apocalypse Revealed 503.

5081. 'With his two courtier-ministers' means from both kinds of sensory powers in the body; that is to say, from these [the new natural man] turned away. This is clear from the meaning of 'courtier-ministers', who in this case are the cupbearer and the baker, as both kinds of sensory powers, dealt with above in 5077, 5078. In relation to the interior man, meant by 'lord the king', the bodily senses - sight, hearing, smell, taste, and touch - are also ministers, courtiers so to speak. For they serve to provide the interior man with evidence gathered from experience in the visible world and in human society, thereby enabling it to become intelligent and wise. For the human being is born with not even any knowledge, let alone with any intelligence or wisdom. He is born with no more than the capacity to receive and be endowed with these. Such reception and endowment is effected through two different channels, an internal channel and an external one. By the internal channel that which is from the Divine flows in, by the external that which is from the world. The two meet within a person, in which case, so far as the person allows himself to receive light from the Divine, he enters into wisdom. The things that flow in by the external channel come through the bodily senses; yet they do not flow in of their own accord but are called forth by the internal man to serve as a base laid down for celestial and spiritual things flowing in from the Lord by the internal channel. From this it may be seen that the bodily senses are like courtier-ministers. In general everything exterior, in relation to what is interior, is a minister; the entire natural man in relation to the spiritual man is nothing else.

[2] The word used in the original language means minister, courtier, bed-chamber servant, and eunuch. In the internal sense the good and truth of the natural man are meant, as is the case here. But specifically the good of the natural man is meant, as in Isaiah,

Do not let the son of the foreigner who clings to Jehovah say, Jehovah surely separates me from being with His people. Do not let the eunuch say, Behold, I am dry wood. For thus said Jehovah to the eunuchs who keep My sabbaths and choose that in which I delight, and are holding fast to My covenant, I will give those in My house and within My walls a place and a name better than sons and daughters; I will give them an eternal name which will not be cut off. Isaiah 56:3-5.

In this case 'the eunuch' stands for the good of the natural man, and 'the son of the foreigner for the truth of the natural man; for the Lord's Church is both external and internal. Those who belong to the external Church are natural; those who belong to the internal Church are spiritual. Those who are natural and yet are governed by good are 'the eunuchs', while those governed by truth are 'the sons of the foreigner'. Also, since the truly spiritual or internal ones are to be found solely within the Church, 'the sons of the foreigner' in addition means therefore those who are outside the Church - the gentiles - who are nevertheless governed by the truth as taught by their religion, 2049, 2593, 2599, 2600, 2602, 2603, 2861, 2863, 7263, while 'the eunuchs' means those governed by good.
