1 E GIACOBBE, veggendo che vi era del grano da vendere in Egitto, disse a’ suoi figliuoli: Perchè state a riguardarvi l’un l’altro?

To many Protestant and Evangelical Italians, the Bibles translated by Giovanni Diodati are an important part of their history. Diodati’s first Italian Bible edition was printed in 1607, and his second in 1641. He died in 1649. Throughout the 1800s two editions of Diodati’s text were printed by the British Foreign Bible Society. This is the more recent 1894 edition, translated by Claudiana.

He-goat of the she-goat

The he-goat of the she-goat signifies natural truths or truths of the external man from which the delights of life are derived. A he-goat also signifies external truths grounded in delights. The truths of the external man, from which the delights of life are derived, are divine truths, in the same way as the truths of the literal sense of the Word in which the doctrinal matters of a genuine church are grounded. These are properly signified by he-goat, and the delights which are thence derived are signified by she-goat. Therefore, the phrase “he-goat of the she-goat”, in the genuine sense, signifies people in external truths and their consequent delights. If the term is used in the opposite sense, it refers to people in external truths, i.e., in appearances of truth derived from the sense of the letter of the Word, which are agreeable to the delights of their life, as those which are agreeable to the delights of the body, which in general are called pleasures, and which are agreeable to the delights of the mind [animus], which, in general, are honors and gains favoring self-love and the love of the world.
