Après que l'homme s'est examiné, a reconnu ses péchés et a fait pénitence, il doit rester constamment dans le bien jusqu'à la fin de la vie : si, au contraire, il retombe ensuite dans sa précédente vie du mal et s'y attache, alors il profane, car alors le mal est conjoint au bien ; de là son dernier état est pire que le premier, selon les paroles du Seigneur :

« Quand l'esprit » immonde sort de l'homme, il parcourt des lieux arides, cherchant repos, mais il n'en trouve pas ; alors il dit : Je retournerai dans ma maison, d'où je suis sorti ; et étant venu, il la trouve vide, et balayée, et ornée pour lui ; alors il s'en va, et il s'adjoint sept autres esprits pires que lui, et étant entrés ils ils habitent là : et le dernier (état) de cet homme devient pire que le premier.
