¹ ซาราห์มีอายุหนึ่งร้อยยี่สิบเจ็ดปี ซาราห์มีชีวิตถึงอายุนี้

² แล้วซาราห์ก็สิ้นชีวิตที่เมืองคีริยาทอารบา คือเมืองเฮโบรน ในแผ่นดินคานาอัน อับราฮัมไว้ทุกข์ให้ซาราห์และร้องไห้คิดถึงนาง

³ อับราฮัมยืนขึ้นหน้าศพพูดกับลูกหลานของเฮทว่า

⁴ "ข้าพเจ้าเป็นคนต่างด้าวและเป็นคนมาอาศัยอยู่ท่ามกลางท่าน ขอท่านให้ที่ดินท่ามกลางท่านเป็นสุสาน เพื่อข้าพเจ้าจะได้ฝังผู้ตายของข้าพเจ้าให้พ้นสายตาไป"

⁵ ลูกหลานของเฮทตอบอับราฮัมว่า

⁶ "นายเจ้าข้า โปรดฟังพวกเรา ท่านเป็นเจ้านายจากพระเจ้าท่ามกลางเรา ขอให้ฝังผู้ตายของท่านในอุโมงค์ฝังศพที่ดีที่สุดของเราเถิด ไม่มีผู้ใดในพวกเราที่จะหวงสุสานของเขาไว้ไม่ให้ท่าน หรือขัดขวางท่านมิให้ฝังผู้ตายของท่าน"

⁷ อับราฮัมก็ลุกขึ้นกราบลงต่อหน้าลูกหลานของเฮทชาวแผ่นดินนั้น

⁸ และพูดกับพวกเขาว่า "ถ้าท่านยินยอมให้ข้าพเจ้าฝังผู้ตายของข้าพเจ้าให้พ้นสายตาไปแล้ว ขอฟังข้าพเจ้าเถิด และวิงวอนเอโฟรนบุตรชายโศหาร์เพื่อข้าพเจ้า

⁹ ขอให้เขาให้ถ้ำมัคเป-ลาห์ ซึ่งเขาถือกรรมสิทธิ์นั้นแก่ข้าพเจ้า มันอยู่ที่ปลายนาของเขา ขอให้เขาขายให้ข้าพเจ้าเต็มตามราคาให้เป็นกรรมสิทธิ์สำหรับใช้เป็นสุสานในหมู่พวกท่าน"

¹⁰ ฝ่ายเอโฟรนอาศัยอยู่ท่ามกลางลูกหลานของเฮท เอโฟรนคนฮิตไทต์จึงตอบอับราฮัมให้บรรดาลูกหลานของเฮทผู้ที่เข้าไปที่ประตูเมืองของเขาฟังว่า

¹¹ "อย่าเลย นายเจ้าข้า โปรดฟังข้าพเจ้า ข้าพเจ้าให้นานั้นแก่ท่านและให้ถ้ำที่อยู่ในนานั้นแก่ท่าน ด้วยข้าพเจ้าให้แก่ท่านต่อหน้าลูกหลานประชาชนของข้าพเจ้า ขอเชิญฝังผู้ตายของท่านเถิด"

¹² อับราฮัมก็กราบลงต่อหน้าชาวแผ่นดินนั้น

¹³ และท่านพูดกับเอโฟรนให้ชาวแผ่นดินนั้นฟังว่า "แต่ถ้าท่านยินยอมให้แล้ว ขอฟังข้าพเจ้า ข้าพเจ้าจะจ่ายค่านานั้น ขอรับเงินจากข้าพเจ้าเถิด และข้าพเจ้าจะได้ฝังผู้ตายของข้าพเจ้าที่นั่น"

¹⁴ เอโฟรนตอบอับราฮัมว่า

¹⁵ "นายเจ้าข้า ขอฟังข้าพเจ้าเถิด ที่ดินแปลงนี้มีราคาเป็นเงินสี่ร้อยเชเขล สำหรับท่านกับข้าพเจ้าก็ไม่เท่าไร ฝังผู้ตายของท่านเถิด"

¹⁶ อับราฮัมก็ฟังคำของเอโฟรน แล้วอับราฮัมก็ชั่งเงินให้เอโฟรนตามจำนวนที่เขาบอกให้ลูกหลานของเฮทฟังแล้ว คือเงินสี่ร้อยเชเขลตามน้ำหนักที่พวกพ่อค้าใช้กันในเวลานั้น

¹⁷ นาของเอโฟรนในมัคเป-ลาห์ ซึ่งอยู่หน้ามัมเร มีนากับถ้ำซึ่งอยู่ในนั้น และต้นไม้ทั้งสิ้นซึ่งอยู่ในนาตลอดทั่วบริเวณนั้น จึงได้ขาย

¹⁸ ให้แก่อับราฮัมเป็นกรรมสิทธิ์ต่อหน้าลูกหลานของเฮท คือต่อหน้าบรรดาผู้ที่เข้าไปที่ประตูเมืองของเขา

¹⁹ ต่อมาอับราฮัมก็ฝังศพนางซาราห์ภรรยาของตน ในถ้ำที่นามัคเป-ลาห์หน้ามัมเร คือเมืองเฮโบรน ในแผ่นดินคานาอัน

²⁰ นาและถ้ำซึ่งอยู่ในนั้นลูกหลานของเฮทยอมขายให้แก่อับราฮัมเป็นกรรมสิทธิ์เพื่อใช้เป็นสุสาน

¹ Abram went up out of Egypt: he, his wife, all that he had, and Lot with him, into the South.

² Abram was very rich in livestock, in silver, and in gold.

³ He went on his journeys from the South even to Bethel, to the place where his tent had been at the beginning, between Bethel and Ai,

⁴ to the place of the altar, which he had made there at the first. There Abram called on the name of Yahweh.

⁵ Lot also, who went with Abram, had flocks, and herds, and tents.

⁶ The land was not able to bear them, that they might live together: for their substance was great, so that they could not live together.

⁷ There was a strife between the herdsmen of Abram's livestock and the herdsmen of Lot's livestock: and the Canaanite and the Perizzite lived in the land at that time.

⁸ Abram said to Lot, "Please, let there be no strife between me and you, and between my herdsmen and your herdsmen; for we are relatives.

⁹ Isn't the whole land before you? Please separate yourself from me. If you go to the left hand, then I will go to the right. Or if you go to the right hand, then I will go to the left."

¹⁰ Lot lifted up his eyes, and saw all the plain of the Jordan, that it was well-watered everywhere, before Yahweh destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah, like the garden of Yahweh, like the land of Egypt, as you go to Zoar.

¹¹ So Lot chose the Plain of the Jordan for himself. Lot traveled east, and they separated themselves the one from the other.

¹² Abram lived in the land of Canaan, and Lot lived in the cities of the plain, and moved his tent as far as Sodom.

¹³ Now the men of Sodom were exceedingly wicked and sinners against Yahweh.

¹⁴ Yahweh said to Abram, after Lot was separated from him, "Now, lift up your eyes, and look from the place where you are, northward and southward and eastward and westward,

¹⁵ for all the land which you see, I will give to you, and to your offspring forever.

¹⁶ I will make your offspring as the dust of the earth, so that if a man can number the dust of the earth, then your seed may also be numbered.

¹⁷ Arise, walk through the land in its length and in its breadth; for I will give it to you."

¹⁸ Abram moved his tent, and came and lived by the oaks of Mamre, which are in Hebron, and built an altar there to Yahweh.
