1 A beše na celoj zemlji jedan jezik i jednake reči.

2 A kad otidoše od istoka, nađoše ravnicu u zemlji senarskoj, i naseliše se onde.

3 Pa rekoše među sobom: Hajde da pravimo ploče i da ih u vatri pečemo. I behu im opeke mesto kamena i smola zemljana mesto kreča.

4 Posle rekoše: Hajde da sazidamo grad i kulu, kojoj će vrh biti do neba, da stečemo sebi ime, da se ne bismo rasejali po zemlji.

5 A Gospod siđe da vidi grad i kulu, što zidahu sinovi čovečiji.

6 I reče Gospod: Gle, narod jedan, i jedan jezik u svih, i to počeše raditi, i neće im smetati ništa da ne urade šta su naumili.

7 Hajde da siđemo, i da im pometemo jezik, da ne razumeju jedan drugog šta govore.

8 Tako ih Gospod rasu odande po svoj zemlji, te ne sazidaše grada.

9 Zato se prozva Vavilon, jer onde pomete Gospod jezik cele zemlje, i odande ih rasu Gospod po svoj zemlji.

10 Ovo je pleme Simovo: beše Simu sto godina, kad rodi Arfaksada, druge godine posle potopa.

11 A rodiv Arfaksada požive Sim pet stotina godina, rađajući sinove i kćeri.

12 A Arfaksad požive trideset i pet godina, i rodi Salu;

13 A rodiv Salu požive Arfaksad četiri stotine i tri godine, rađajući sinove i kćeri.

14 A Sala požive trideset godina, i rodi Evera;

15 A rodiv Evera požive Sala četiri stotine i tri godine, rađajući sinove i kćeri.

26 A Tara požive sedamdeset godina, i rodi Avrama, Nahora i Arana.

27 A ovo je pleme Tarino: Tara rodi Avrama, Nahora i Arana; a Aran rodi Lota.

28 I umre Aran pre Tare oca svog na postojbini svojoj, u Uru haldejskom.

29 I oženi se Avram i Nahor, i ženi Avramovoj beše ime Sara a ženi Nahorovoj ime Melha, kći Arama oca Melhe i Jeshe.

30 A Sara beše nerotkinja, i ne imaše poroda.

31 I uze Tara sina svog Avrama i Lota sina Aronovog, unuka svog, i Saru snahu svoju, ženu Avrama sina svog; i pođoše zajedno iz Ura haldejskog da idu u zemlju hanansku, i dođoše do Harana, i onde se nastaniše.

32 I požive Tara svega dvesta i pet godina; i umre Tara u Haranu.

Doctrine

Doctrine may be defined as organized truth that informs the way we act and think about the world.

In common usage, "doctrine" is not something that has to be grand or solemn. We all have doctrines about many little things like lawn care, car maintenance, or fixing chili; this kind of doctrine is just the way we do something because we think it is the right way. Often the reasoning behind these doctrines is that it is the way our parents did it, that we read it somewhere, or that it just seems right.

Everyone has a doctrine about how they live their lives in general as well, such as a charitable doctrine of looking out for others, or a selfish doctrine of "me first." Whether or not we have given it much thought, we live in accordance with our doctrine - our way of thinking.

Swedenborg used "doctrine" quite specifically to mean the organized arrangement of spiritual teachings about various aspects of reality. All religions have sacred beliefs, some of them written, like the Bible or the Quran, and some of them oral. From these beliefs they establish doctrine. In many cases organizations of the same religion will emphasize or reject different sets of truths and develop different forms of doctrine. Moreover, different religions will disagree about the validity of the original beliefs. But most would agree that the Truth, with a capital T, comes from some version of God.

The Writings for the New Church tell us that, in the Bible, cities represent doctrine. This was because cities were organized habitations, home ground to many people, places where there was much interchange of ideas and goods between people. They were places that could accommodate differing neighborhoods, and that could be fortified. On a spiritual plane all these things can be said about doctrine. It’s interesting to notice just how often cities are mentioned in the Word, either to be conquered, lived in, or built. Mention of a city comes as early as Genesis 4:17, just after the expulsion from the garden of Eden, where we are told that Cain built a city in the land of Nod and named it after his son, Enoch. Then in Genesis 11, men are not only building the well-known tower of Babel, but also a city of which the tower was a part. There are hundreds of other cities mentioned, and they signify different structures of doctrine.

Finally, in the next to last chapter of the Word (Revelation 20) we are told of the descent from God of the City New Jerusalem, coming down to earth. We in the New Church believe that this City represents a new doctrine, given by the Lord, written down and published by Emanuel Swedenborg in the 1700s, that resolves the false ideas that came into Christianity with the ideas of three persons in God, and with the later belief in salvation by faith alone.

New Christian doctrine holds that there is one God - one Divine Person who is the Lord God Jesus Christ, and that salvation requires a joining of faith and charity (a belief in true ideas, and a love for God and the neighbor).

508. The sixth experience.

One day a magnificent church building appeared to me; it was square in plan with a roof like a crown, with arches above and a raised parapet running around. Its walls were all windows made of crystal, its door of a pearly substance. Inside on the south side towards the west there was a platform, on which the open Word lay at the right surrounded by a blaze of light, so bright as to spread round and light up the whole platform. In the middle of the church was a shrine with a curtain in front of it; but this was now raised and there stood a golden cherub with a sword which he brandished in all directions in his hand.

[2] When I caught sight of all this, as I meditated, the meaning of each of the details came flooding into my mind. The church meant the new church; the door of a pearly substance, entry into it; the windows of crystal the truths which enlighten it; the platform the priesthood and their preaching; the Word on it, open and lighting up the top of the platform, the revelation of its internal, or spiritual, sense; the shrine in the middle of the church the link of that church with the heaven of angels; the golden cherub there the Word in its literal sense; the sword brandished in his hand meant that this sense can be twisted in different ways, so long as it is made to refer to some truth. The lifting of the curtain in front of the cherub meant that now the Word was laid open.

[3] Later, when I got closer, I saw there was an inscription over the door: NOW IT IS PERMITTED. This meant that now it is permitted to enter with the understanding into the mysteries of faith. Seeing this inscription led me to think that it is extremely dangerous to enter with the understanding into the dogmas of faith which have been put together out of one's own intelligence and the falsities it produces, and even more so to seek to support them by quoting the Word. This has the effect of shutting off the understanding at the top and little by little also at the bottom, to such an extent that theology is not only disliked but actually wiped out, like the writing on a paper being destroyed by book-worms, or the wool of a piece of cloth by grubs. His understanding then concerns itself only with political affairs which affect his life in the country where he lives, and with civil affairs relating to his official duties, and with domestic affairs of his household; and in all of these he constantly embraces nature, being led by the enticement of its pleasures to love it, as an idolater does the golden image in his lap.

[4] Now since the dogmas of present-day Christian churches are put together not from the Word, but from people's own intelligence and the false ideas that come from that, and also by means of some ideas supported from the Word, for this reason the Lord's Divine providence has seen to it that among Roman Catholics the Word has been taken away from laymen, while among Protestants it remains open, though shut off by their frequent saying that the understanding must be kept in obedience to their faith.

[5] But in the new church the opposite happens; here it is permitted with the understanding to approach and penetrate all its secrets, and also to support them from the Word. The reason is that its doctrines are a series of truths revealed by the Lord through the Word; and proving them by rational argument causes the understanding to be opened up above more and more. This lifts it into the light enjoyed by the angels of heaven; and that light is in essence truth, and it makes the acknowledgment of the Lord as the God of heaven and earth shine out in all its glory. This is what the inscription 'NOW IT IS PERMITTED' over the door means; and the removal of the curtain of the shrine in front of the cherub has the same meaning. It is a rule in the new church that falsities shut off the understanding, and truths open it up.

[6] After this I saw what looked like a child overhead, holding a paper in his hand. As he approached me, he grew in size until he was a man of average height. He was an angel from the third heaven; all there look at a distance like children. When he reached me, he held the paper out to me. But since it was written in the rounded script customary in that heaven, I gave it back and asked them to expound the meaning of what was written on it in words I could comprehend in my thinking.

'What is written here,' he replied, 'is: FROM NOW ON ENTER INTO THE MYSTERIES OF THE WORD WHICH HAVE SO FAR BEEN HIDDEN: FOR EACH ONE OF ITS TRUTHS IS A MIRROR IN WHICH WE SEE THE LORD.'
