658. Those three degrees which in general are called those of the human understanding - that is to say, intellect, reason, and knowledge - are also meant, as has been stated, by the windows for the three storeys of the Temple in Jerusalem, 1 Kings 6:4, 6, 8. They are also meant in what has appeared earlier by the rivers that went out of the garden of Eden from the east, where 'the east' means the Lord, 'Eden' love which belongs to the will, 'the garden' resulting intelligence, and 'the rivers' wisdom, reason, and knowledge.
