'If he said thus: The speckled will be your wages, then all the flocks bore speckled' means His freedom, and that in His freedom the Lord adopted those things - even evils that were linked to the goods. This is clear from the state of the matter in the internal sense, which is that He had the freedom to change the wages, and in so doing that in His freedom He adopted those things. That even evils linked to the goods are meant is clear from the meaning of 'the speckled' as good with which evils have been mingled, dealt with in 3993, 3995, 4005.
