1 Και οτε ητο ο Αβραμ ενενηκοντα εννεα ετων, εφανη ο Κυριος εις τον Αβραμ και ειπε προς αυτον, Εγω ειμαι Θεος ο Παντοκρατωρ· περιπατει ενωπιον μου, και εσο τελειος.

2 Και θελω στησει την διαθηκην μου αναμεσον εμου και σου· και θελω σε πληθυνει σφοδρα σφοδρα.

3 Και επεσεν ο Αβραμ επι προσωπον αυτου· και ελαλησε προς αυτον ο Θεος, λεγων,

4 Εγω, ιδου, η διαθηκη μου ειναι προς σε· και θελεις γεινει πατηρ πληθους εθνων·

5 και δεν θελει καλεισθαι πλεον το ονομα σου Αβραμ, αλλα το ονομα σου θελει εισθαι Αβρααμ· διοτι πατερα πληθους εθνων σε κατεστησα·

6 και θελω σε αυξησει σφοδρα σφοδρα, και θελω σε καταστησει εις εθνη, και βασιλεις θελουσιν εξελθει εκ σου·

7 και θελω στησει την διαθηκην μου αναμεσον εμου και σου, και του σπερματος σου μετα σε εις τας γενεας αυτων, εις διαθηκην αιωνιον, δια να ημαι Θεος εις σε και εις το σπερμα σου μετα σε·

8 και θελω δωσει εις σε, και εις το σπερμα σου μετα σε, την γην της παροικιας σου, πασαν την γην Χανααν, εις κατασχεσιν αιωνιον· και θελω εισθαι ο Θεος αυτων.

9 Και ειπεν ο Θεος προς τον Αβρααμ, συ δε την διαθηκην μου θελεις φυλαξει, συ και το σπερμα σου μετα σε εις τας γενεας αυτων.

10 Αυτη ειναι η διαθηκη μου την οποιαν θελετε φυλαξει, αναμεσον εμου και υμων και του σπερματος σου μετα σε· παν αρσεν υμων θελει περιτεμνεσθαι.

11 Και θελετε περιτεμνει την σαρκα της ακροβυστιας υμων, και θελει εισθαι εις σημειον της διαθηκης μεταξυ εμου και υμων·

12 και παιδιον οκτω ημερων θελει περιτεμνεσθαι μεταξυ σας, παν αρσεν εις τας γενεας υμων ο γεγεννημενος εν τη οικια, και ο αργυρωνητος εκ παντος ξενου, οστις δεν ειναι εκ του σπερματος σου·

13 θελει εξαπαντος περιτεμνεσθαι ο γεγεννημενος εν τη οικια σου, και ο αργυρωνητος σου· και θελει εισθαι η διαθηκη μου επι της σαρκος υμων εις διαθηκην αιωνιον·

14 και το απεριτμητον αρσεν, του οποιου δεν ηθελε περιτμηθη η σαρξ της ακροβυστιας αυτου, η ψυχη εκεινη θελει εξολοθρευθη εκ μεσου του λαου αυτης· την διαθηκην μου παρεβη.

15 Και ειπεν ο Θεος προς τον Αβρααμ, Σαραν την γυναικα σου, δεν θελεις καλεσει πλεον το ονομα αυτης Σαραν, αλλα Σαρρα θελει εισθαι το ονομα αυτης.

16 Και θελω ευλογησει αυτην, και θελω προσετι δωσει εις σε υιον εξ αυτης· και θελω ευλογησει αυτην, και θελει γεινει μητηρ εθνων· βασιλεις λαων θελουσιν εξελθει εξ αυτης.

17 Και επεσεν ο Αβρααμ επι προσωπον αυτου και εγελασε, και ειπεν εν τη καρδια αυτου, Εις ανθρωπον εκατονταετη θελει γεννηθη τεκνον; και η Σαρρα, γυνη ενενηκοντα ετων, θελει γεννησει;

18 Και ειπεν ο Αβρααμ προς τον Θεον, Ειθε ο Ισμαηλ να ζηση ενωπιον σου

19 Και ειπεν ο Θεος, Ναι η γυνη σου Σαρρα θελει γεννησει υιον εις σε, και θελεις καλεσει το ονομα αυτου Ισαακ· και θελω στησει την διαθηκην μου προς αυτον εις διαθηκην αιωνιον, και προς το σπερμα αυτου μετ' αυτον·

20 περι δε του Ισμαηλ σου εισηκουσα· Ιδου, ευλογησα αυτον, και θελω αυξησει αυτον, και θελω πληθυνει αυτον σφοδρα σφοδρα· δωδεκα αρχοντας θελει γεννησει, και θελω καμει αυτον εθνος μεγα·

21 αλλα την διαθηκην μου θελω στησει προς τον Ισαακ, τον οποιον θελει γεννησει η Σαρρα εις σε το ερχομενον ετος, εν τω αυτω τουτω καιρω.

22 Αφου δε ετελειωσε να λαλη μετ' αυτου, ανεβη ο Θεος απο του Αβρααμ.

23 Και ελαβεν ο Αβρααμ Ισμαηλ τον υιον αυτου, και παντας τους γεγεννημενους εν τη οικια αυτου, και παντας τους αργυρωνητους αυτου, παν αρσεν των ανθρωπων της οικιας του Αβρααμ, και περιετεμε την σαρκα της ακροβυστιας αυτων την αυτην εκεινην ημεραν, καθως ειπε προς αυτον ο Θεος.

24 Ο δε Αβρααμ ητο ενενηκοντα εννεα ετων, οτε περιετμηθη την σαρκα της ακροβυστιας αυτου.

25 Ισμαηλ δε ο υιος αυτου ητο δεκατριων ετων, οτε περιετμηθη την σαρκα της ακροβυστιας αυτου.

26 την αυτην εκεινην ημεραν περιετμηθη ο Αβρααμ, και Ισμαηλ ο υιος αυτου·

27 και παντες οι ανθρωποι της οικιας αυτου, οι γεγεννημενοι εν τη οικια, και οι εξ αλλογενων αργυρωνητοι περιετμηθησαν μετ' αυτου.

9659. 'And there shall be eight boards and their bases [made] from silver' means support in every respect from good and through truth that springs from good. This is clear from the meaning of 'eight' as what is so in every respect, dealt with below; from the meaning of 'boards' as good that lends support, dealt with in 9634; and from the meaning of 'bases [made] from silver' as support provided through truth from good, dealt with in 9643.

[2] 'Eight' means in every respect because this number has the same meaning as two and four, being the product of these when multiplied together. 'Two' and 'four' mean being joined together, completely so, 5194, 8423, 8877, and consequently also mean what is complete, 9103, and therefore what is so in every respect; for what exists in completeness does so in every respect. Another reason why 'eight' means what exists in completeness and in every respect is that since 'a week' means a whole period from beginning to end, 2044, 3845, 'the eighth day' means a complete state, from which a new beginning then commences. This explains why males had to be circumcised on the eighth day, Genesis 17:12; 21:4, for circumcision was a sign of purification from foul kinds of love by means of the truth of faith, 2039, 2046 (end), 2799, 3412, 3413, 4462. The foreskin corresponded to the defilement of good by those kinds of love, 4462, 7045, 7225, and the knife of flint with which circumcision was carried out was a sign of the truth of faith by means of which purification was accomplished, 2039 (end), 2046 (end), 2799, 7044.

[3] What exists in completeness and in every respect is also meant by 'eight' following 'seven' in Micah,

When Asshur comes into our land and treads our palaces we will set up over him seven shepherds and eight princes of men (homo), and they will feed 1 the land of Asshur with the sword; and he will deliver [us] from Asshur. Micah 5:5-6.

'Asshur' stands for reasoning on the basis of one's own intelligence about the Church's forms of good and its truths. Deliverance totally or in every respect from consequent falsity is meant by 'eight princes of men' who will bring destruction, 'princes of men' being the leading truths that rise out of good.

[4] The fact that 'eight' means completeness and in every respect is also clear from an experience I had involving the admission and reception of some communities into heaven, about which see 2130. I saw as many as twelve communities received first, and after them as many as eight more; for people admitted and received into heaven are those who have been purified from earthly things, that is, from all love of them, and have gone on to receive instruction. The number eight on that occasion was a sign of that which was complete.

[5] 'Eight' has a similar meaning elsewhere in the Word, for example where it says that the portico of the gateway was 'eight cubits' long from the house, and that there were 'eight steps' up to the house, in Ezekiel 40:9, 31, 41. The description there is of the new house, by which the Lord's New Church is meant, truths leading to good and from good back to truths being meant by 'the portico' and 'the steps'.

[6] Anyone who does not know that spiritual realities or real things are implied by the numbers used in the Word cannot possibly see any such reality nor thus anything holy in the measures and numbers where the tabernacle, Solomon's temple, and after these the new house, new temple, and new land in Ezekiel, are described, when yet not a syllable in the Word is devoid of spiritual meaning. Let all who have intelligence weigh up in their mind what the measures and numbers in Chapters 40-48 of Ezekiel really mean, also the measures and numbers in John, at Revelation 21:17, where it says that the angel measured the wall of the new Jerusalem, a hundred and forty-four cubits, and that this measure was that of a man (homo), that is, of an angel, and also in the following, besides many other places,

Let him who has intelligence reckon the number of the beast, for it is the number of a man (homo), that is, its number is six hundred and sixty-six. Revelation 13:18.

7918. 'And you shall take a bunch of hyssop' means the outward means by which purification is effected. This is clear from the meaning of 'hyssop' as outward truth, the means by which purification is effected, dealt with below. It says that they were to take a bunch of hyssop because 'a bunch' is used to refer to truths and the arrangement of them, 5530, 5881, 7408. The reason why 'hyssop' means outward truth, the means of purification, is that all spiritual purification is effected by means of truths. For the earthly and worldly types of love from which a person has to be purified are not recognized except by means of truths. When these truths are instilled by the Lord a horror of those types of love, as of things unclean and damnable, is also at the same time instilled. The effect this horror has is that when something similar enters the person's thinking the feeling of horror returns, producing a loathing of those types of love. That is how a person is purified by truths, which serve as outward means. This was the reason why it was laid down that knives or 'small swords' made of flint should be used when circumcision took place, 'small swords' or knives made of flint being the truths of faith by means of which purification is effected, see 2799, 7044, and 'circumcision purification from filthy types of love, 2039, 2632, 3412, 3413, 4461, 7045.

[2] Since 'hyssop' had that meaning it was used in cleansings, which in the internal sense meant purifications from falsities and evils, as in the cleansing of leprosy in Moses,

The priest shall take for cleansing a leper two living clean birds, and cedarwood, and scarlet, and hyssop; and he shall dip them in the blood of the slaughtered bird, and sprinkle over the one to be cleansed. Leviticus 14:4-7.

Hyssop was likewise used in the cleansing of the house, if leprosy was in it, Leviticus 14:49-51. The preparation of the water of separation by which cleansings were accomplished also involved the use of cedarwood and hyssop, Numbers 19:6, 18. 'Cedarwood' meant inward spiritual truth, whereas 'hyssop' meant outward [spiritual] truth. Thus 'cedarwood' is the means effecting purification more internally, 'hyssop' the means effecting it more externally. That 'hyssop' is a means of purification is plainly evident in David,

You will purge me with hyssop and I shall become clean; You will wash me and I shall be made whiter than snow. Psalms 51:7.

'Purging with hyssop and becoming clean' stands for external purification, 'washing and being made whiter than snow' for internal purification, 'snow' and 'whiteness' having reference to truth, 3301, 3993, 4007, 5319. 'Hyssop' means a very low kind of truth and 'cedar' a superior kind of truth, as is evident from the following words in the first Book of Kings, Solomon spoke about trees, from the cedar which is in Lebanon even to the hyssop which comes out of the wall. 1 Kings 4:33.

Here 'the cedar' stands for the internal kind of truth and 'hyssop' for the external kind of truth that belong to intelligence.
