Kings 21

Study

And it was, after these words*, that Naboth the Jezreelite had a vineyard which was in Jezreel beside the palace of Ahab king of Samaria.

And Ahab spoke to Naboth, saying, Give me thy vineyard, and it shall be to me for a vegetable garden; for it is near, beside my house; and I will Give to thee instead··of it a better vineyard than it; or, if it is good in thine eyes, I will Give to thee this price in silver.

And Naboth said to Ahab, Far··be··it to me from Jehovah, that I should give the inheritance of my fathers unto thee.

And Ahab came to his house, sullen and gloomy, on··account··of the word which Naboth the Jezreelite had spoken unto him, and had said, I will not give thee the inheritance of my fathers. And he lay··down upon his bed, and turned· his face ·around, and ate no bread.

And Jezebel his wife came unto him, and spoke unto him; Why is it that thy spirit is sullen, and thou eatest no bread?

And he spoke to her, For I spoke to Naboth the Jezreelite, and said unto him, Give me thy vineyard for silver; or if thou delightest··in it, I will Give thee a vineyard instead of it; and he said, I will not Give thee my vineyard.

And Jezebel his wife said unto him, Thou now makest a kingdom upon Israel. Arise, eat bread and let thy heart be··well; I will give to thee the vineyard of Naboth the Jezreelite.

And she wrote letters in the name of Ahab, and sealed them with his seal, and sent the letters unto the elders and to the nobles that were in his city, dwelling with Naboth.

And she wrote in the letters saying, Proclaim a fast, and cause Naboth to sit at the head of the people.

And cause two men, sons of Belial, to sit in··front··of him, and let them testify against him, saying, Thou didst bless as God and the king*. And bring· him ·out and stone him and he shall die.

And the men of his city, the elders and nobles who dwelt in his city, did as Jezebel sent unto them, as it was written in the letters which she had sent unto them.

They proclaimed a fast, and made Naboth sit at the head of the people.

And two men, the sons of Belial, came··in and sat in··front··of him; and the men of Belial testified against Naboth in··front··of the people, saying, Naboth did bless as God and the king. And they brought· him ·forth outside the city, and stoned him with stones, and he died.

And they sent to Jezebel, saying, Naboth was stoned, and is··dead.

And it was, as Jezebel heard that Naboth was stoned and died, that Jezebel said to Ahab, Arise, possess the vineyard of Naboth the Jezreelite, which he refused to give to thee for silver; for Naboth is not alive, but dead.

And it was, when Ahab heard that Naboth was··dead, that Ahab arose to go··down to the vineyard of Naboth the Jezreelite, to take··possession··of it.

And the word of Jehovah was unto Elijah the Tishbite, saying,

Arise, go··down to meet Ahab, king of Israel, who is in Samaria; behold, he is in the vineyard of Naboth, whither he has gone··down to take··possession··of it.

And thou shalt speak unto him, saying, Thus says Jehovah, Hast thou murdered and also dispossessed? And thou shalt speak unto him, saying, Thus says Jehovah, In the place where dogs lapped··up the blood of Naboth, shall dogs lap··up thy blood, even thine.

And Ahab said to Elijah, Hast thou found me, O my enemy? And he said, I have··found thee, because thou hast sold thyself to do evil in the eyes of Jehovah.

Behold, I will bring evil against thee, and will sweep··away after thee, and will cut··off from Ahab every one that urinates against a wall, and him that is restrained and left in Israel.

And I will make thy house as the house of Jeroboam the son of Nebat, and as the house of Baasha the son of Ahijah, for the provocation which thou hast provoked, and hast made Israel to sin.

And of Jezebel also spoke Jehovah, saying, The dogs shall eat Jezebel within the rampart of Jezreel.

Him that dies of Ahab in the city, shall the dogs eat; and him that dies in the field shall the fowl of the heavens eat.

Only there was no··one as Ahab, who did··sell himself to do evil in the eyes of Jehovah, whom Jezebel his wife incited.

And he made himself abominable exceedingly in going after idols, according to all that the Amorites did, whom Jehovah dispossessed from before the sons of Israel.

And it was, when Ahab heard those words*, that he rent his garments, and put sackcloth upon his flesh, and fasted, and lay in sackcloth, and went slowly.

And the word of Jehovah was unto Elijah the Tishbite, saying,

Dost thou see that Ahab humbles himself before Me? Because he humbles himself before Me, I will not bring the evil in his days; in the days of his son I will bring the evil on his house.
