1 Och detta är den välsignelse gudsmannen Mose gav Israels barn före sin död;

2 han sade: »HERREN kom från Sinai, och från Seir gick hans sken upp för dem; man kom fram i glans från berget Paran, ut ur hopen av mångtusen heliga; på hans högra sida brann i eld en lag för dem.

3 Ja, han vårdar sig om folken; folkets heliga äro alla under din hand. De ligga vid din fot, de hämta upp av dina ord.

4 Mose gav åt oss en lag, en arvedel for Jakobs menighet.

5 Och Jesurun fick en konung, när folkets hövdingar församlades, Israels stammar allasammans.»

6 »Må Ruben leva och icke ; dock blive hans män en ringa hop.

7 Och detta sade han om Juda: »Hör, o HERRE, Judas röst, och låt honom komma till sitt folk. Med sina händer utförde han dess sak; bliv du honom en hjälp mot hans ovänner

8 Och om Levi sade han: »Dina tummim och dina urim, de tillhöra din frommes skara, dem du frestade i Massa, dem du tvistade med vid Meribas vatten,

9 dem som sade om fader och moder: 'Jag ser dem icke', och som icke ville kännas vid sina bröder, ej heller veta av sina barn. Ty de aktade på ditt tal, och ditt förbund höllo de.

10 De lära Jakob dina rätter och Israel din lag, de bära fram rökverk för din näsa och heloffer på ditt altare.

11 Välsigna, HERRE, hans kraft, och låt hans händers verk behaga dig. Krossa länderna på hans motståndare, på hans fiender, så att de icke kunna resa sig.»

12 Om Benjamin sade han: »HERRENS vän är han, han skall bo i trygghet hos honom, hos honom som överskygger honom alltid, och som har sin boning mellan hans höjder.»

13 Och om Josef sade han: »Välsignat av HERREN vare hans land med himmelens ädlaste gåvor, med dagg, med gåvor från djupet som utbreder sig därnere,

14 med solens ädlaste alster och månvarvens ädlaste frukter,

15 med de uråldriga bergens yppersta skatter och de eviga höjdernas ädlaste frukt,

16 med jordens ädlaste frukt och allt vad hon bär, och med nåd från honom som bodde i busken. Detta komme över Josefs huvud, över hans hjässa, furstens bland bröder.

17 Härlig är den förstfödde bland hans tjurar, såsom en vildoxes äro hans horn; med dem stångar han ned alla folk, ja ock dem som bo vid jordens ändar. Sådana äro Efraims tiotusenden. sådana Manasses tusenden.»

18 Och om Sebulon sade han: »Gläd dig, Sebulon, när du drager ut, och du, Isaskar, i dina tält.

19 Folk inbjuda de till sitt berg; där offra de rätta offer. Ty havens rikedom få de suga, och de skatter som sanden döljer.»

20 Och om Gad sade han: »Lovad vare han som gav så rymligt land åt Gad! Lik en lejoninna har han lägrat sig, han krossar både arm och hjässa.

21 Han utsåg åt sig förstlingslandet, ty där var hans härskarlott förvarad. Dock drog han med bland folkets hövdingar; HERRENS rätt utförde han och hans domar, tillsammans med det övriga Israel

22 Och om Dan sade han: »Dan är ett ungt lejon, som rusar ned från Basan.»

23 Och om Naftali sade han: »Naftali har fått riklig nåd och välsignelse till fyllest av HERREN. Västern och södern tage du i besittning.»

24 Och om Aser sade han: »Välsignad bland söner vare Aser! Han blive älskad av sina bröder, och han doppe sin fot i olja.

25 Av järn och koppar vare dina riglar; och så länge du lever, må din kraft bestå.»

26 »Ingen är lik Gud, o Jesurun; till din hjälp far han fram på himmelen och i sin höghet på skyarna.

27 En tillflykt är han, urtidens Gud, och härnere råda hans eviga armar. Han förjagade fienderna för dig, han sade: Förgör dem.

28 Så fick Israel bo i trygghet, Jakobs källa vara i ro, i ett land med säd och vin, under en himmel som dryper av dagg.

29 Säll är du, Israel; ja, vem är dig lik? Du är ett folk som får seger genom HERREN, genom honom som är din skyddande sköld, honom som är ditt ärorika svärd. Ja, dina fiender skola visa dig underdånighet, och du skall gå fram över deras höjder.»

9420. 'And Moses went up into the mountain of God' means in the direction of heaven. This is clear from the meaning of Mount Sinai, to which 'the mountain of God' refers here, as the law or Divine Truth which comes from the Lord, thus the Word as it exists in heaven, and therefore also heaven itself, dealt with in 8399, 8753, 8793, 8805. The reason why the revelation took place on a mountain and why that mountain is called 'the mountain of God' is that 'the mountain' means the heavenly attribute of love, which is good, and consequently means heaven, and in the highest sense the Lord, 795, 796, 2722, 4210, 6435, 8327, and 'the mountain of God' means Divine Truth springing from the Divine Good of the Lord's Divine Love, 8758. For the Lord is called 'God' in the Word by virtue of Divine Truth, and 'Jehovah' by virtue of Divine Good, 2769, 2807, 2822, 3921(end), 4295, 4402, 7010, 7268, 8192, 8301, 8988, 9167. This is why the words the mountain of God are used.

[2] The fact that 'Mount Sinai' means the law or Divine Truth emanating from the Lord's Divine Good, and so means the Word, and in the highest sense the Lord, is clear in David,

The earth trembled, the heavens also dropped [rain] before God. This Sinai [trembled] before God, the God of Israel. The chariots of God are myriad on myriad, 1 thousands of peacemakers; the Lord is within them, Sinai is within the sanctuary. Psalms 68:8, 17.

'The earth' and 'the heavens' are the external and the internal dimensions of the Church, see 1733, 2117, 2118 (end), 3355, 4535, and 'a chariot' is doctrinal teachings, 2760, 5321, 8146, 8148, 8215, so that 'the chariots of God' are matters of doctrine or God's truths as they exist in heaven. From all this it is evident that 'this Sinai before God, the God of Israel' and 'Sinai within the sanctuary' mean the law or Divine Truth emanating from the Lord's Divine Good, and in the highest sense the Lord in heaven. In the Book of Judges,

O Jehovah, when You went forth from Seir, when You set out from the field of Edom, the earth trembled, the heavens also dropped, the clouds indeed dropped water, the mountains flowed down before Jehovah, this Sinai before Jehovah. Judges 5:4-5.

'This Sinai' again stands for Divine Truth emanating from the Lord's Divine Good. Similarly in Moses,

Jehovah came from Sinai, and dawned from Seir upon them; He shone from Mount Paran, and came out of myriads of holiness. From His right hand came a fiery law for them. Deuteronomy 33:2.

795. 'All the high mountains beneath the whole sky were covered' means that all goods stemming from charity were done away with. This is clear from the meaning of 'mountains' among the most ancient people. Among them 'mountains' meant the Lord, for they conducted their worship of Him on mountains because these were the loftiest parts of the earth. Consequently 'mountains' meant heavenly things which they also called 'the most high', and accordingly love and charity, and so the goods that stem from love and charity, which are heavenly things. In the contrary sense also, the people who are haughty are called 'mountains' in the Word, and so mountains also mean self-love. The Most Ancient Church also is meant in the Word by 'mountains' from the fact that mountains rose up above the earth and were nearer so to speak to heaven, where things have their origins.

[2] That 'mountains' means the Lord, and all heavenly things deriving from Him, that is, goods that stem from love and charity, is clear from the following places in the Word. These show what 'mountains' means in particular, for every single detail takes its meaning from the matter to which it applies. In David,

The mountains will bring peace, and the hills, in righteousness. Psalms 72:3.

'Mountains' stands for love to the Lord, 'hills' for love towards the neighbour, such as existed with the Most Ancient Church, which, since it was of such a nature, is also meant in the Word by 'mountains' and therefore 'hills'. In Ezekiel,

On My holy mountain, on the mountain height of Israel, said the Lord Jehovih, there all the house of Israel, all of them that are in the land, will serve Me. Ezekiel 20:40.

Here 'holy mountain' stands for love to the Lord, 'mountain height of Israel' for charity towards the neighbour. In Isaiah,

It will be in the latter days that the mountain of the house Jehovah will be established on the top of the mountains, and raised above the hills. Isaiah 2:2.

This stands for the Lord and consequently for everything heavenly.

[3] In the same prophet,

Jehovah Zebaoth will make for all peoples on this mountain a feast of fat things, and He will swallow up on this mountain the face 1 of the covering. Isaiah 25:6-7.

'Mountain' stands for the Lord and consequently for everything heavenly. In the same prophet,

It will be that on every high mountain, and on every lofty hill, there will be brooks, streams of water. Isaiah 30:25.

'Mountains' stands for goods that stem from love, 'hills' for goods that stem from charity, such goods being the source of truths of faith, which are 'brooks and streams of water'. In the same prophet,

You will have a song as in the night when a feast is hallowed, and joy of heart as when one goes with a flute to come to the mountain of Jehovah, to the Rock of Israel. Isaiah 30:29.

'Mountain of Jehovah' stands for the Lord with reference to goods that stem from love, 'Rock of Israel' for the Lord with reference to goods that stem from charity.

[4] In the same prophet,

Jehovah Zebaoth will come down to fight on Mount Zion and on its hill. Isaiah 31:4.

Here and in many other places 'Mount Zion' stands for the Lord and consequently for everything celestial, which is love, and 'hill' for what is celestial but lower, which is charity.

In the same prophet,

Get you up on to the high mountain, O Zion, herald of good tidings; lift up your voice with strength, O Jerusalem, herald of good tidings. Isaiah 40:9.

'Getting up on to the high mountain and declaring good tidings' is worshipping the Lord from love and charity, which are inmost things, and are therefore also called most high. That which is inmost is referred to as the most high. In the same prophet,

Let the inhabitants of the rock sing, let them shout from the top of the mountains. Isaiah 42:11.

'Inhabitants of the rock' stands for those who abide in charity, 'shouting from the top of the mountains' for worshipping the Lord from love. In the same prophet,

How beautiful on the mountains are the feet of Him who is bringing good tidings, causing peace to be heard, bringing good tidings of good, causing salvation to be heard. Isaiah 52:7

'Bringing good tidings on the mountains' in like manner stands for preaching about the Lord from doctrine concerning love and charity, and for worshipping from these. In the same prophet,

The mountains and the hills will resound before you with song, and all the trees of the field will clap their hands. Isaiah 55:12.

This stands for worshipping the Lord from love and charity, which are 'the mountains and the hills', and from faith deriving from these, which is 'the trees of the field'.

[5] In the same prophet,

I will set all My mountains as a way, and My pathways will be raised up. Isaiah 49:11.

'Mountains' stands for love and charity, 'way' and 'pathway' for the truths of faith deriving from these, which are said to be 'raised up' when they stem from love and charity, which are inmost. In the same prophet,

He who trusts in Me will take possession in the land, and will inherit My holy mountain. Isaiah 57:13.

This stands for the Lord's kingdom where there is nothing other than love and charity. In the same prophet,

I will bring forth seed from Jacob, and from Judah the heir of My mountains, and My chosen ones will possess it. Isaiah 65:9.

'Mountains' stands for the Lord's kingdom and for celestial goods, and 'Judah' for the celestial Church. In the same prophet,

Thus said the High and Lofty One inhabiting eternity, whose name is the Holy One. I dwell as the High and Holy One Isaiah 57:15.

Here 'high' stands for holy. Consequently 'mountains', on account of their height above the earth, meant the Lord, and holy heavenly things that are His. This also is why it was from Mount Sinai that the Lord proclaimed the Law. Love and charity are also what the Lord means by 'mountains' when, in reference to the close of the age, He says that those who were then in Judaea were to flee to the mountains, Matthew 24:16; Luke 21:21; Mark 13:14. Here 'Judaea' stands for the vastated Church.
