Krig i Ordet representerar bekämpningen av frestelser när det som är gott attackeras av det som är ont eller falskt. Det onda som attackerar kommer från ett av de många helvetessamhällena och det fungerar genom att väcka en självisk kärlek i vårt sinne som strider mot vad vi vet är rätt. Då attackerar vår själviska kärlek kärleken som ger näring till önskan att vara en bra person och det finns krig i våra sinnen. Detta representeras av krig som Israels barn utkämpade i och runt Kanaans land, av vilka det finns en lång historia i det gamla testamentet. De själviska kärleken flödar i våra sinnen från vår ärftlighet, och de goda kärleken kommer långt med vårt samvete när det utvecklas. Om vi inte hade något samvete kunde vi inte frestas, skulle vi omedelbart följa önskan om vår själviskhet och ge efter. Men slutresultatet är att vi är i slaveri till hells och kommer att göra vad de vill.

This disposition comes from the Lord, who never wishes to afflict anyone with evil or thrust him down into hell, not even if he were the worst and bitterest enemy of all. It is the person who afflicts himself with evil and so rushes into hell. This also follows from the very nature of evil and the very nature of good. The inherent nature of evil is to wish to injure everyone, but the inherent nature of good is to injure none. The evil are acting in conformity with their own life when they are attacking, for their constant desire is to destroy. The good are acting in conformity with their own life when they attack nobody, and when they can be of use in defending others from evils.
