1 ESTOS son los estatutos y derechos que cuidaréis de poner por obra, en la tierra que Jehová el Dios de tus padres te ha dado para que la poseas, todos los días que vosotros viviereis sobre la tierra.

2 Destruiréis enteramente todos los lugares donde las gentes que vosotros heredareis sirvieron á sus dioses, sobre los montes altos, y sobre los collados, y debajo de todo árbol espeso:

3 Y derribaréis sus altares, y quebraréis sus imágenes, y sus bosques consumiréis con fuego: y destruiréis las esculturas de sus dioses, y extirparéis el nombre de ellas de aquel lugar.

4 No haréis así á Jehová vuestro Dios.

5 Mas el lugar que Jehová vuestro Dios escogiere de todas vuestras tribus, para poner allí su nombre para su habitación, ése buscaréis, y allá iréis:

6 Y allí llevaréis vuestros holocaustos, y vuestros sacrificios, y vuestros diezmos, y la ofrenda elevada de vuestras manos, y vuestros votos, y vuestras ofrendas voluntarias, y los primerizos de vuestras vacas y de vuestras ovejas:

7 Y comeréis allí delante de Jehová vuestro Dios, y os alegraréis, vosotros y vuestras familias, en toda obra de vuestras manos en que Jehová tu Dios te hubiere bendecido.

8 No haréis como todo lo que nosotros hacemos aquí ahora, cada uno lo que le parece,

9 Porque aun hasta ahora no habéis entrado al reposo y á la heredad que os da Jehová vuestro Dios.

10 Mas pasaréis el Jordán, y habitaréis en la tierra que Jehová vuestro Dios os hace heredar, y él os dará reposo de todos vuestros enemigos alrededor, y habitaréis seguros.

11 Y al lugar que Jehová vuestro Dios escogiere para hacer habitar en él su nombre, allí llevaréis todas las cosas que yo os mando: vuestros holocaustos, y vuestros sacrificios, vuestros diezmos, y las ofrendas elevadas de vuestras manos, y todo lo escogido

12 Y os alegraréis delante de Jehová vuestro Dios, vosotros, y vuestros hijos, y vuestras hijas, y vuestros siervos, y vuestras siervas, y el Levita que estuviere en vuestras poblaciones: por cuanto no tiene parte ni heredad con vosotros.

13 Guárdate, que no ofrezcas tus holocaustos en cualquier lugar que vieres;

14 Mas en el lugar que Jehová escogiere, en una de tus tribus, allí ofrecerás tus holocaustos, y allí harás todo lo que yo te mando.

15 Con todo, podrás matar y comer carne en todas tus poblaciones conforme al deseo de tu alma, según la bendición de Jehová tu Dios que él te habrá dado: el inmundo y el limpio la comerá, como la de corzo ó de ciervo:

16 Salvo que sangre no comeréis; sobre la tierra la derramaréis como agua.

17 Ni podrás comer en tus poblaciones el diezmo de tu grano, ó de tu vino, ó de tu aceite, ni los primerizos de tus vacas, ni de tus ovejas, ni tus votos que prometieres, ni tus ofrendas voluntarias, ni las elevadas ofrendas de tus manos:

18 Mas delante de Jehová tu Dios las comerás, en el lugar que Jehová tu Dios hubiere escogido, tú, y tu hijo, y tu hija, y tu siervo, y tu sierva, y el Levita que está en tus poblaciones: y alegrarte has delante de Jehová tu Dios en toda obra de tus manos.

19 Ten cuidado de no desamparar al Levita en todos tus días sobre tu tierra.

20 Cuando Jehová tu Dios ensanchare tu término, como él te ha dicho, y tú dijeres: Comeré carne, porque deseó tu alma comerla, conforme á todo el deseo de tu alma comerás carne.

21 Cuando estuviere lejos de ti el lugar que Jehová tu Dios habrá escogido, para poner allí su nombre, matarás de tus vacas y de tus ovejas, que Jehová te hubiere dado, como te he mandado yo, y comerás en tus puertas según todo lo que deseare tu alma.

22 Lo mismo que se come el corzo y el ciervo, así las comerás: el inmundo y el limpio comerán también de ellas.

23 Solamente que te esfuerces á no comer sangre: porque la sangre es el alma; y no has de comer el alma juntamente con su carne.

24 No la comerás: en tierra la derramarás como agua.

25 No comerás de ella; para que te vaya bien á ti, y á tus hijos después de ti, cuando hicieres lo recto en ojos de Jehová.

26 Empero las cosas que tuvieres tú consagradas, y tus votos, las tomarás, y vendrás al lugar que Jehová hubiere escogido:

27 Y ofrecerás tus holocaustos, la carne y la sangre, sobre el altar de Jehová tu Dios: y la sangre de tus sacrificios será derramada sobre el altar de Jehová tu Dios, y comerás la carne.

28 Guarda y escucha todas estas palabras que yo te mando, porque te vaya bien á ti y á tus hijos después de ti para siempre, cuando hicieres lo bueno y lo recto en los ojos de Jehová tu Dios.

29 Cuando hubiere devastado delante de ti Jehová tu Dios las naciones á donde tú vas para poseerlas, y las heredares, y habitares en su tierra,

30 Guárdate que no tropieces en pos de ellas, después que fueren destruídas delante de ti: no preguntes acerca de sus dioses, diciendo: De la manera que servían aquellas gentes á sus dioses, así haré yo también.

31 No harás así á Jehová tu Dios; porque todo lo que Jehová aborrece, hicieron ellos á sus dioses; pues aun á sus hijos é hijas quemaban en el fuego á sus dioses.

32 Cuidaréis de hacer todo lo que yo os mando: no añadirás á ello, ni quitarás de ello.

9393. 'And Moses took half of the blood' means Divine Truth which has become a matter of life and of worship. This is clear from the meaning of 'the blood' as Divine Truth emanating from the Lord, dealt with in 4735, 6978, 7317, 7326, 7850, 9127. The reason why it is Divine Truth which has become a matter of life and of worship is that it was the blood which Moses sprinkled over the people, verse 8, and this blood means Divine Truth which a person has accepted, thus that which has become a matter of life and of worship; for that Truth is said to have been accepted by a person which becomes a matter of life and so of worship. And it becomes a matter of life and worship when the person has an affection for it or loves it, or what amounts to the same thing, when he wills it, and - in willing it, and so in loving and having an affection for it - does it. Till then it is indeed present with him in his memory, and is at times called forth from there and comes before his inward sight or understanding, from where it passes back into his memory. However, as long as God's truth goes no deeper than this, though it resides with the person it has not been implanted in his life and will; for a person's life consists in his will. Therefore when truth is called forth from the memory into the understanding, then passes from the understanding into the will, and goes out from the will into action, that truth becomes part of the person's life and is called good. All this shows what is meant by Divine Truth which has become a matter of life. The situation is the same with truth which becomes part of worship. Worship springing from truth which does no more than cling in the memory and make its appearance from there in the understanding is not worship. But worship springing from truth that goes out from the will, and so from affection and love, is worship. In the Word this worship is called worship of the heart, but the other, worship of the lips alone.

[2] It has indeed been shown already in the places referred to above that 'blood' means Divine Truth emanating from the Lord. Nevertheless since the majority belonging to the Church at the present day take the blood in the Holy Supper to mean nothing other than the Lord's blood that was shed on the Cross, and in a more general sense His whole Passion of the Cross, let something further be stated briefly to show that blood is not what is meant there but Divine Truth emanating from the Lord. The reason why this is unknown within the Church is that nothing whatever is known at the present day about correspondences, nor consequently about the internal sense of the Word, the sense understood by angels when someone in the world reads the Word.

[3] It becomes clear from many places in the Word that 'blood' does not mean blood but God's truth, and plainly so from the following in Ezekiel,

Say to every bird of the air and to every wild animal of the field, Assemble and come, gather yourselves from all around to My sacrifice which I am sacrificing for you, so that you may eat flesh and drink blood. You will eat the flesh of the mighty, and drink the blood of the princes of the earth. You will eat fat till you are glutted, and drink blood till you are drunk, from My sacrifice which I will sacrifice for you. You will be glutted at My table with horse and chariot, and with every man of war. Thus will I set My glory among the nations. Ezekiel 39:17-21.

It is plainly evident that 'blood' is not used here to mean blood, for it says that they were going to drink the blood of the princes of the earth, and the blood from the sacrifice, till they were drunk, when yet drinking blood, especially the blood of princes, is something abominable and was forbidden to the children of Israel on pain of death, Leviticus 3:17; 7:26; Leviticus 17:1-end; Deuteronomy 12:16-25; 15:23. It also says that they were going to be glutted with horse, chariot, and every man of war. Anyone therefore who does not know that 'blood' means Divine Truth, 'princes' leading truths, 'sacrifice' the things that belong to worship, 'horse' the understanding of truth, 'chariot' doctrinal teachings, and 'man of war' truth engaged in conflict against falsity is bound to be bemused by each of the words used in this passage.

[4] His response would be the same to the Lord's words in John,

Jesus said, Truly, truly, I say to you, Unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink His blood, you will have no life in you. Whoever eats My flesh and drinks My blood has eternal life, and I will raise Him up at the last day. My flesh is truly food, and My blood is truly drink. He who eats My flesh and drinks My blood abides in Me, and I in him. John 6:53-56.

But see what has been shown already regarding these words, in 4735, 6978, 7317, 7326, 7850, 9127. The fact that flesh corresponds to good, as does bread, and that blood corresponds to truth, as does wine, has been told me very many times from heaven. I have likewise been told that angels understand the Word solely according to correspondences, and that as a result of this mankind is joined by means of the Word to heaven, and through heaven to the Lord.

[5] And in like manner I have been told that the Holy Supper was established by the Lord to be the means by which all things of heaven, that is, all things which are the Lord's, might be joined to members of the Church. For in the Holy Supper the flesh or bread is the Divine Good of the Lord's Divine Love towards the whole human race, and a person's love in return to the Lord, while the blood or wine is the Divine Truth emanating from the Divine Good of the Lord's Divine Love, and in turn the person's acceptance of it. In heaven, furthermore, eating and drinking those gifts implies making them one's own and joining them together. But see what has been shown already regarding these matters in 2165, 2177, 3464, 4211, 4217, 4581, 4735, 5915, 6789, 7850, 9323.

4211. 'And called his brothers to eat bread' means [an invitation] to make the good from the Lord's Divine Natural their own. This is clear from the meaning of 'brothers' as those who were now to be joined together by the covenant, that is, by friendship, and in the internal sense as those who are governed by good and truth (for such people are called 'brothers', see 367, 2360, 3303, 3459, 3803, 3815, 4121, 4191); from the meaning of 'eating' as making one's own, dealt with in 3168, 3513 (end), 3832 (for meals taken together and feasts among the ancients meant making things their own and being joined together by means of love and charity, 3596); and from the meaning of 'bread' as good that stems from love, dealt with in 276, 680, 1798, 3478, 3735, and in the highest sense means the Lord, 2165, 2177, 3478, 3813. Since 'bread' in the highest sense means the Lord it therefore means everything holy which comes from Him, that is, it means everything good and true. And since no other good exists which is good except the good of love and charity, 'bread' therefore means love and charity. Sacrifices in former times had no other meaning, and for that reason were referred to by the single word 'bread', see 2165. And some of the flesh of the sacrifices was eaten so that the heavenly feast - that is, a joining together through good flowing from love and charity - might be represented. The same is meant today by the Holy Supper, for this has replaced sacrifices and feasts of consecrated things. The Holy Supper is in the Church an external practice that has an internal reality within it, and by means of this reality it joins one who is governed by love and charity to heaven, and by means of heaven to the Lord. For in the Holy Supper too 'eating' means making one's own - 'the bread' being celestial love and 'the wine' spiritual love - so much so that while it is being eaten by one in a state of holiness nothing else is perceived in heaven.

[2] The reason why the phrase 'making the good from the Lord's Divine Natural their own' is used is that the subject is the good that exists with the gentiles, for it is this good that 'Laban' represents now, 4189. When man is joined to the Lord he is not joined to His Supreme Divine itself but to His Divine Human, for man cannot have any idea at all of the Lord's Supreme Divine, because this lies so far beyond anything he can conceive of that it fades from view altogether and ceases to mean anything to him. But he is able to have an idea of His Divine Human. For everyone is joined through thought and affection to one of whom he can have some idea but not to one of whom he cannot have any idea. If, when a person thinks about the Lord's Human, holiness is present in his ideas he also thinks of the holiness which comes from the Lord and fills heaven, and at the same time he thinks of heaven, since heaven in its entirety corresponds to a complete human being, which correspondence has its origin in the Lord, 684, 1276, 2996, 2998, 3624-3649. This explains why it is not possible to be joined to the Lord's Supreme Divine, only to His Divine Human, and through that Divine Human to His Supreme Divine. Hence the statement in John 1:18 about nobody, except the only begotten Son, ever having seen God, also the statement about there being no way to the Father except through Him; as well as from the statement that He is the Mediator. The truth of all this can be plainly recognized from the fact that all within the Church who declare their belief in a Supreme Being and yet set the Lord at nought are people who have no belief in anything at all, not even in the existence of heaven or of hell, and who worship nature. And if such people are ready to learn from experience it will be clear to them that the wicked, even those who are extremely so, declare a like belief.

[3] But the way in which people think of the Lord's Human varies, one person's ideas being different from another's, and one person's more holy than another's. Those within the Church are able to think that His Human is Divine, and also that He is one with the Father, as He Himself says that the Father is in Him and He is in the Father. But those outside the Church are unable to do this, for one thing because they do not know anything about the Lord and for another because their idea of the Divine is gained solely from visible images and tangible idols. Nevertheless the Lord joins Himself to them by means of the good they do from the charity and obedience present within their crude notions of Him. And this is why mention is made here about them making the good from the Lord's Divine Natural their own. For when the Lord is joined to man the state of thought and consequent affection in him determines the exact nature of that conjunction. Those who have an entirely holy conception of the Lord and who at the same time have a true knowledge of and affections for what is good and true - as those within the Church are able to have - have been joined to the Lord as to His Divine Rational. Those however who do not have so holy a notion of Him and who do not have so interior a notion and affection, and yet the good of charity exists with them, have been joined to the Lord as regards His Divine Natural. And those whose holiness is cruder still are joined to the Lord as to His Divine Sensory Perception. This last type of joining is what is represented by 'the bronze serpent', in that those who looked at it recovered from serpent-bites, Numbers 21:9. This is the type of joining together which those among the gentiles have who worship idols and yet lead charitable lives in accordance with their own religion. From these considerations one may now see what is meant by making the good from the Lord's Divine Natural their own, meant by 'Jacob called his brothers to eat bread'.
