2 Samuel 23

1 And these be the last words of David;
says David the son of Jesse;
and says the mighty··man raised··up above,
the anointed of the God of Jacob,
and the pleasant psalms of Israel,

2 the spirit of Jehovah spoke in me,
and His statement was on my tongue.

3 The God of Israel said, the Rock of Israel spoke to me,
A ruler over man must be just, ruling in the fear of God.

4 And as the light of the morning, when the sun rises,
a morning without thick··clouds;
from the brightness, from the rain,
is the sprout out of the earth.

5 For is not my house so with God?
For He has set an eternal covenant for me,
arranged in all and kept;
for all my salvation and all my delight,
will He not cause them to grow?

6 And Belial shall be as the thorn,
all of them made to flee··away,
for they take not with the hand.

7 And a man will touch them, he must be··full of iron,
and the wood of the spear,
and with fire, burning··up they shall be burnt··up in their dwelling.

8 These are the names of the heroes whom David had; Josheb-basshebeth, a Tachmonite, the head of the three; he was Adino the Eznite; because of the eight hundred slain at one time.

9 And after him was Eleazar the son of Dodo, the son of an Ahohite, among the three heroes with David, when they reproached the Philistines that were there gathered to battle, and the men of Israel had gone··up.

10 He arose and smote among the Philistines until his hand tired and his hand stuck to the sword; and Jehovah made a great salvation in that day; and the people returned after him only to strip the spoil.

11 And after him was Shammah the son of Agey the Hararite. And the Philistines were gathered into a living unit; and there was there a part of a field full of lentils, and the people fled from before the Philistines.

12 But he stood··forth in the midst of the part of the field and rescued it and smote the Philistines; and Jehovah made a great salvation.

13 And the three, the head of the thirty, went··down, and they came at the harvest unto David unto the cave of Adullam; and the living of the Philistines was encamped in the valley of Rephaim.

14 And David was then in the fort, and the garrison of the Philistines was then at Bethlehem.

15 And David longed and said, Who will give· me water ·to··drink from the cistern of Bethlehem which is in the gate?

16 And the three heroes split through the camp of the Philistines, and drew water out of the cistern of Bethlehem, that was in the gate, and took··up and brought it to David; and he was· not ·willing to drink it, but poured· it ·out to Jehovah.

17 And he said, Far··be··it from me, O Jehovah, that I should do this; is it not the blood of the men that went with their souls? And he was· not ·willing to drink it. These things did the three heroes.

18 And Abishai, the brother of Joab, the son of Zeruiah was head of the three. And he stirred··up his spear over three hundred slain, and had a name among the three.

19 Was he not the most glorious of the three? And he became a prince for them, but came not to the three.

20 And Benaiah the son of Jehoiada, the son of a man of valor, of many works, of Kabzeel, smote two strong··lions of Moab, and he went··down and smote the lion in the midst of a pit in the day of snow.

21 And he killed an Egyptian, a man of goodly appearance, and in the hand of the Egyptian was a spear, but he went··down to him with a staff, and snatched··away the spear out of the Egyptian’s hand, and smote him with his own spear.

22 Thus did Benaiah the son of Jehoiada, and had a name among the three heroes.

23 He was· more ·glorious than the thirty, but came not to the three; and David set him over his council*.
