1 ויהי דבר־יהוה אלי לאמר׃

2 בן־אדם הנבא אל־נביאי ישראל הנבאים ואמרת לנביאי מלבם שמעו דבר־יהוה׃

3 כה אמר אדני יהוה הוי על־הנביאים הנבלים אשר הלכים אחר רוחם ולבלתי ראו׃

4 כשעלים בחרבות נביאיך ישראל היו׃

5 לא עליתם בפרצות ותגדרו גדר על־בית ישראל לעמד במלחמה ביום יהוה׃

6 חזו שוא וקסם כזב האמרים נאם־יהוה ויהוה לא שלחם ויחלו לקים דבר׃

7 הלוא מחזה־שוא חזיתם ומקסם כזב אמרתם ואמרים נאם־יהוה ואני לא דברתי׃ ס

8 לכן כה אמר אדני יהוה יען דברכם שוא וחזיתם כזב לכן הנני אליכם נאם אדני יהוה׃

9 והיתה ידי אל־הנביאים החזים שוא והקסמים כזב בסוד עמי לא־יהיו ובכתב בית־ישראל לא יכתבו ואל־אדמת ישראל לא יבאו וידעתם כי אני אדני יהוה׃

10 יען וביען הטעו את־עמי לאמר שלום ואין שלום והוא בנה חיץ והנם טחים אתו תפל׃

11 אמר אל־טחי תפל ויפל היה גשם שוטף ואתנה אבני אלגביש תפלנה ורוח סערות תבקע׃

12 והנה נפל הקיר הלוא יאמר אליכם איה הטיח אשר טחתם׃ ס

13 לכן כה אמר אדני יהוה ובקעתי רוח־סערות בחמתי וגשם שטף באפי יהיה ואבני אלגביש בחמה לכלה׃

14 והרסתי את־הקיר אשר־טחתם תפל והגעתיהו אל־הארץ ונגלה יסדו ונפלה וכליתם בתוכה וידעתם כי־אני יהוה׃

15 וכליתי את־חמתי בקיר ובטחים אתו תפל ואמר לכם אין הקיר ואין הטחים אתו׃

16 נביאי ישראל הנבאים אל־ירושלם והחזים לה חזון שלם ואין שלם נאם אדני יהוה׃ ף

17 ואתה בן־אדם שים פניך אל־בנות עמך המתנבאות מלבהן והנבא עליהן׃

18 ואמרת כה־אמר אדני יהוה הוי למתפרות כסתות על כל־אצילי ידי ועשות המספחות על־ראש כל־קומה לצודד נפשות הנפשות תצודדנה לעמי ונפשות לכנה תחיינה׃

19 ותחללנה אתי אל־עמי בשעלי שערים ובפתותי לחם להמית נפשות אשר לא־תמותנה ולחיות נפשות אשר לא־תחיינה בכזבכם לעמי שמעי כזב׃ ס

20 לכן כה־אמר אדני יהוה הנני אל־כסתותיכנה אשר אתנה מצדדות שם את־הנפשות לפרחות וקרעתי אתם מעל זרועתיכם ושלחתי את־הנפשות אשר אתם מצדדות את־נפשים לפרחת׃

21 וקרעתי את־מספחתיכם והצלתי את־עמי מידכן ולא־יהיו עוד בידכן למצודה וידעתן כי־אני יהוה׃

22 יען הכאות לב־צדיק שקר ואני לא הכאבתיו ולחזק ידי רשע לבלתי־שוב מדרכו הרע להחיתו׃

23 לכן שוא לא תחזינה וקסם לא־תקסמנה עוד והצלתי את־עמי מידכן וידעתן כי־אני יהוה׃

366. That they should kill one another. That this signifies the falsification or extinction of truths, is manifest from the signification of killing, as denoting to extinguish truths; for by killing in the Word is signified to kill spiritually, or to kill the spiritual part of man or his soul, which is to extinguish truths. The reason why it also denotes to falsify, is, because when truths are falsified, they are also extinguished; for by falsification a different understanding of them is arrived at, and truth is truth according to the understanding of any one concerning it; for the love and the principle which have rule in man, draw and apply all things to them, even truths themselves; wherefore, when the love is evil, or the principle false, then the truths are infected with the evil of the love, or the falsity of the principle, and so are extinguished; this therefore is what is here signified by, "that they should kill one another." That this takes place when there is no good with man, and especially when there is no good in the doctrine of his church, is manifest from the preceding words, where it is said: "When he had opened the second seal, there went out a red horse; and it was given to him that sat thereon to take peace from the earth"; by which is signified a second state of the church, when the understanding of the Word is destroyed as to good, whence divisions arise in the church (concerning which see above, n. 361, 364, 365).

[2] That the understanding of the Word, or, what is the same, the understanding of truth, is destroyed when there is no good with man, that is, where there is no love to the Lord and charity towards the neighbour, may be seen above (n. 365); for good in man, or what is the same, love in him, is the fire of his life, and truth in him, or the faith of truth, is the light thence; therefore according to the quality of the good or the quality of the love in him, such is the truth, or the faith of truth in him. Hence it is evident that if man is in evil, or in an evil love, he cannot be in the truth, or in the faith of truth; for the quality of the light which issues from that fire, is light to those who are in hell, which is a fatuous light, like the light from burning coals, which light is turned into mere darkness from the light flowing in from heaven. Such also is the light called natural light (lumen) with the evil, when they reason against the things of the church.

[3] That they should falsify truths and thereby extinguish them, is also meant by the Lord's words in Matthew:

Jesus said to the disciples, "The brother shall deliver up the brother, the father the son; the children shall rise up against the parents, and cause them to be put to death" (10:21).

And in Luke:

"Ye shall be betrayed by parents, and brethren, and kinsfolk, and friends; and some of you shall they cause to be put to death" (21:16).

By parents, brethren, children, [kinsfolk,] and friends, are not meant here parents, brethren, children, kinsfolk, friends, nor by disciples are meant disciples, but the goods and truths of the church, also evils and falsities; and that evils will extinguish goods, and falsities truths. 4502. 'And they took Dinah from Shechem's house, and went away' means that they took away the affection for truth. This is clear from the representation of 'Dinah' as the affection for truth, dealt with above in 4498. The meaning according to the internal proximate sense is that they took away the affection for truth from those who were part of the remnants of the Most Ancient Church, for the phrase 'from Shechem's house' is used and by 'Shechem's house' is meant the good of truth of that Church. But as the subject here is the utter destruction of truth and good among those descended from Jacob, who are meant here by Jacob's sons, and as every detail mentioned has a specific application to the particular subject that is under discussion, 'Shechem's house' therefore means here simply the good of truth, like that which had existed with the member of the Most Ancient Church. Thus the meaning is that this good was wiped out among the nation descended from Jacob. For in the internal sense of the Word every expression or name means some aspect of the subject to which it belongs. At the same time the extinction of good and truth among Hamor and Shechem and his family is meant, because they accepted external usages, as shown in 4493.

[2] The truth of what has been explained so far regarding Simeon and Levi becomes clear from the prophetical utterances of Jacob before he died, where the following occurs,

Simeon and Levi are brothers; instruments of violence are their swords. Into their secret place let my soul not come; in their congregation let not my glory be united; for in their anger they killed a man, in their pleasure they hamstrung an ox. Cursed be their anger, for it is fierce, and their fury, for it is severe. I will divide them in Jacob, and will scatter them in Israel. Genesis 49:5-7.

'Simeon and Levi' means the truth of faith which among the descendants of Jacob was turned into falsity, and the good of charity into evil, as above in 4499, 4500. They are called 'brothers' because good is the brother of truth, or charity is the brother of faith, 4498. 'Instruments of violence are their swords' means that falsities and evils did violence to truths and goods, 4499. 'Into their secret place let my soul not come, in their congregation let not my glory be united' means severance as regards life and doctrine, for in the Word 'soul' is used to refer to life, 1000, 1040, 1742, 3299, and 'glory' to doctrine. 'For in their anger they killed a man, in their pleasure they hamstrung an ox' means that with evil intent they annihilated the truth of the Church and the good of the Church, 'a man' meaning the truth of the Church, 3134, and 'an ox' its good, 2180, 2566, 2781. 'Cursed be their anger, for it is fierce, and their fury, for it is severe' means the punishment incurred for turning away from truth and good - 'cursing' meaning turning oneself away and also being punished on that account, 245, 379, 1423, 3530, 3584, while anger means the departure from good, and 'fury' the departure from truth, 357, 3614. 'I will divide them in Jacob, and will scatter them in Israel' means that goods and truths will exist no longer within either the external or the internal aspect of their Church - 'dividing' and 'scattering' meaning separating and completely removing from them, 4424, 'Jacob' being the external aspect of the Church and 'Israel' the internal, 4286.

[3] These things are said about Simeon and Levi in this prophetical utterance because those two mean in general the truth and good of the Church, and when these cease to exist, and more so when falsities and evils take their place, the Church has been wiped out. Nothing other than this is contained in these prophetical words, as may be seen from the fact that neither the tribe of Simeon nor the tribe of Levi was cursed more than any other tribe. For the tribe of Levi was selected for the priesthood, and the tribe of Simeon existed as one of the rest of the tribes of Israel.
