1 Ja Jumal ütles Jaakobile: 'Võta kätte, mine üles Peetelisse, ela seal ja tee sinna altar Jumalale, kes sulle ennast ilmutas, kui sa põgenesid oma venna Eesavi eest!'

2 Ja Jaakob ütles oma perele ja kõigile, kes olid koos temaga: 'Kõrvaldage võõrad jumalad, kes teie keskel on, ja puhastage endid ning vahetage riided!

3 Ja me võtame kätte ning läheme üles Peetelisse ja teeme sinna altari Jumalale, kes mind kuulis mu ahastuse ajal ja oli minuga teel, mida käisin.'

4 Siis nad andsid Jaakobile kõik nende käes olevad võõrad jumalad ja kõrvarõngad, mis neil kõrvus olid, ja Jaakob mattis need maha Sekemi ligidal oleva tamme alla.

5 Ja nad läksid teele; aga hirm Jumala ees lasus ümberkaudseil linnadel ja need ei ajanud taga Jaakobi poegi.

6 Ja Jaakob jõudis Luusi, see on Peetelisse Kaananimaal, tema ja kogu rahvas, kes oli koos temaga.

7 Ja ta ehitas sinna altari ning pani sellele paigale nimeks 'Peeteli Jumal', sest seal oli Jumal ennast temale ilmutanud, kui ta põgenes oma venna eest.

8 Aga Deboora, Rebeka imetaja, suri, ja ta maeti ühe tamme alla allpool Peetelit, ja sellele pandi nimeks Nututamm.

9 Ja Jumal ilmutas ennast taas Jaakobile, kui see Mesopotaamiast tuli, ja õnnistas teda.

10 Ja Jumal ütles temale: 'Jaakob on su nimi. Ärgu hüütagu su nime enam Jaakobiks, vaid su nimi olgu Iisrael!' Ja ta pani temale nimeks Iisrael.

11 Ja Jumal ütles temale: 'Mina olen Kõigeväeline Jumal. Ole viljakas ja paljune! Sinust saab rahvas, jah, rahvaste hulk, ja sinu niudeist tulevad kuningad.

12 Ja maa, mille ma andsin Aabrahamile ja Iisakile, ma annan sinule; ka sinu soole pärast sind ma annan selle maa.'

13 Ja Jumal läks tema juurest üles paigast, kus ta temaga oli rääkinud.

14 Ja Jaakob püstitas samba sinna paika, kus ta temaga oli rääkinud, kivisamba, ja kallas selle peale joogiohvri ning valas õli.

15 Ja Jaakob nimetas paiga, kus Jumal temaga oli rääkinud, Peeteliks.

16 Siis nad läksid Peetelist teele. Aga kui veel tükk maad oli minna Efratani, pidi Raahel sünnitama, ja tal oli raske sünnitus.

17 Tema raske sünnituse ajal ütles aitajanaine temale: 'Ära karda, sest ka seekord on sul poeg!'

18 Ja kui ta hing oli välja minemas, sest varsti ta surigi, pani ta temale nimeks Ben-Ooni; aga tema isa kutsus teda Benjaminiks.

19 Ja Raahel suri ning ta maeti Efrata tee äärde, see on Petlemma.

20 Ja Jaakob püstitas tema hauale samba; see Raaheli hauasammas on alles tänapäevani.

21 Ja Iisrael läks teele ning lõi oma telgi üles teisele poole Karjatorni.

22 Ja kui Iisrael elas seal maal, juhtus, et Ruuben läks ja magas oma isa liignaise Billa juures. Ja Iisrael sai sellest kuulda ja see oli paha tema silmis.

23 Jaakobil oli kaksteist poega; Lea pojad: Ruuben, Jaakobi esmasündinu, Siimeon, Leevi, Juuda, Issaskar ja Sebulon;

24 Raaheli pojad: Joosep ja Benjamin;

25 Billa, Raaheli teenija pojad: Daan ja Naftali;

26 Silpa, Lea teenija pojad: Gaad ja Aaser. Need olid Jaakobi pojad, kes sündisid temale Mesopotaamias.

27 Ja Jaakob jõudis oma isa Iisaki juurde Mamresse, Kirjat-Arbasse, see on Hebronisse, kus Aabraham ja Iisak olid võõrastena elanud.

28 Ja Iisaki elupäevi oli sada kaheksakümmend aastat.

29 Siis Iisak heitis hinge ja suri; ta koristati oma rahva juurde, vana ja elatanud; ta pojad Eesav ja Jaakob matsid tema.

4601. That Reuben went and lay with Bilhah his father’s concubine. That this signifies the profanation of good by means of faith separate, and that and Israel heard signifies that this faith was rejected, is evident from the representation of Reuben as being faith in doctrine and in understanding, which is the first thing of the church (see n. 3861, 3866), here this faith separate from charity (of which in what follows); and from the signification of “lying with Bilhah his father’s concubine,” as being the profanation of good, for “to commit adultery” signifies to pervert or adulterate goods (n. 2466, 2729, 3399), but “to lie with a father’s concubine” is to profane them; and from the signification of “Israel heard,” as being that this faith was rejected. In the proper sense by Israel’s hearing is signified that the spiritual church knew this and assented to it; for by “hearing” is signified hearkening to, and by “Israel” the spiritual church; but that the true church does not assent, will appear from what will be said about Reuben. But in the internal sense is signified that this faith was rejected, for it is not said what Jacob felt and thought about this nefarious deed; nevertheless that he utterly abominated and abhorred it, is manifest from his prophecy respecting Reuben:

Reuben, thou art my firstborn, my strength, and the beginning of my might; excellent in honor, and excellent in power. Unstable as water, thou shalt not excel, who wentest up thy father’s bed, then profanedst thou it, he went up my couch (Genesis 49:3-4);

and from Reuben’s being on this account deprived of his birthright (1 Chron. 5:1). Hence it is evident that by “Israel heard” is signified that this faith was rejected. (That “birthright” is the faith of the church may be seen above, n. 352, 2435, 3325.)

[2] The profanation of good is effected by faith separate when the truth of the church and its good are acknowledged and believed, and yet the man lives contrary to them. For with those who separate the things of faith from those of charity in the understanding and thence in life, evil is conjoined with truth and falsity with good; and this conjunction itself is what is called profanation. It is otherwise with those, who, although they know what the truth and good of faith are, still do not at heart believe. (See what has been said and shown before on profanation, n. 301-303vvv2, 571, 582, 593, 1001, 1003, 1008, 1010, 1059, 1327, 1328, 2051, 2426, 3398, 3399, 3402, 3489, 3898, 4050, 4289; also that the profanation of good by faith separate was represented by Cain’s killing Abel; by Ham’s being cursed by his father; and by the Egyptians being swallowed up by the Red Sea, n. 3325; and here also by Reuben, n. 3325, 3870).

[3] In order that those who are of the spiritual church could be saved, the Lord miraculously separated their intellectual part from their will part, and bestowed upon the intellectual the power of receiving a new will (n. 863, 875, 895, 927, 928, 1023, 1043, 1044, 2256, 4328, 4493). When therefore the intellectual apprehends and perceives the good which is of faith, and appropriates it to itself, and yet man’s will (that is, his willing evil) still reigns and commands, there is effected the conjunction of truth and evil, and of good and falsity. This conjunction is profanation, and is meant by eating and drinking unworthily in the Holy Supper, said of those from whom the good which is there signified by the “body,” and the truth which is there signified by the “blood,” cannot be separated, because things which have been conjoined in this manner can never be separated to all eternity, and therefore the deepest hell awaits them. But they who know what the truth and good of faith are, and yet do not at heart believe them (as is the case with most people at the present day), cannot profane them, because the intellectual does not receive them and imbue itself with them.

[4] It is the rejection of this separated faith that is here treated of, because in what presently follows truths and goods are treated of in their genuine order, and directly afterwards their conjunction with the rational or intellectual. The sons of Jacob presently named are truths and goods in genuine order, and Isaac is the rational or intellectual. The coming of Jacob and his sons to Isaac, is in the internal sense this conjunction with the intellectual.

3489. That the church is of such a character does not appear to those who are within the church; namely, that they despise and hold in aversion all things which are of good and truth; also that they bear enmities against such things, and especially against the Lord Himself; for they frequent places of worship, hear preaching, and are in a kind of sanctity when there; they go to the Holy Supper, and at times converse with one another in a becoming manner concerning such things-this is done by bad men as well as by good men-and they also live among themselves in civic charity or friendship. Consequently in the eyes of men no contempt appears, still less aversion; and less still enmity against the goods and truths of faith, and thus against the Lord. These things however are external forms by which one person misleads another; while the internal forms of the men of the church are altogether unlike, being quite contrary to the external forms. The internal forms are those which are here described, and which are as above mentioned; their real quality appears to the life in the heavens, for the angels do not attend to any other than internal things, that is, to ends, or to intentions and desires, and to the derivative thoughts.

[2] How unlike these are to the externals is evident from those who come from the Christian world into the other life, concerning whom see above (n. 2121-2126); for in the other life they think and speak according to their internals alone; for externals are left behind together with the body; and there it is manifest that however peaceable such have seemed in the world, they nevertheless entertained hatred one against another, and against all things which are of faith, and especially against the Lord; for when in the other life the Lord is merely mentioned in their presence, a sphere not only of contempt but also of aversion and enmity against Him is manifestly exhaled and diffused from them, even from those who in appearance had spoken and preached piously about Him; and it is the same when charity and faith are mentioned.

[3] In the internal form (which is there manifested) they are of such a character that if while they had lived in this world their externals had been loosed and removed, that is, had they not then feared for their life and had they not feared the laws, and especially had they not feared for their reputation, on account of the honors which they solicited and pursued, and on account of the wealth which they desired and eagerly sought, they would have rushed one against another with intestine hatred, in accordance with their impulses and thoughts; and would have seized the goods of others without any conscience, and likewise without any conscience would have butchered others, most especially the innocent. Such as regards their interiors are Christians at this day [A.D. 1751], except a few whom they do not know; from which it is evident what is the quality of the church.
