1 Kui rahvas nägi, et Mooses viivitas mäelt tulekuga, siis rahvas kogunes Aaroni ümber ja ütles temale: 'Võta kätte ja tee meile jumalaid, kes käiksid meie ees, sest me ei tea, mis on juhtunud Moosesega, selle mehega, kes tõi meid Egiptusemaalt välja!'

2 Siis Aaron ütles neile: 'Rebige ära kuldrõngad, mis on kõrvus teie naistel, poegadel ja tütardel, ja tooge need mulle!'

3 Ja kogu rahvas rebis ära kuldrõngad, mis neil kõrvus olid, ja tõi need Aaronile.

4 Tema võttis need vastu nende käest, töötles lõikeriistaga ja valmistas valatud vasika. Siis nad ütlesid: 'See on su jumal, Iisrael, kes tõi sind Egiptusemaalt välja!'

5 Kui Aaron seda nägi, siis ta ehitas selle ette altari; ja Aaron hüüdis ning ütles: 'Homme on Issanda püha!'

6 Järgmisel päeval tõusid nad vara ning ohverdasid põletusohvreid ja tõid tänuohvreid; ja rahvas istus maha sööma ja jooma ning tõusis üles mängima.

7 Siis Issand rääkis Moosesega: 'Mine astu alla, sest su rahvas, kelle sa tõid Egiptusemaalt välja, on teinud pahasti!

8 Nad on kähku pöördunud teelt, mida ma neil käskisin käia. Nad on enestele teinud valatud vasika. Nad on seda kummardanud ja sellele ohverdanud, ja nad on öelnud: See on su jumal, Iisrael, kes tõi sind Egiptusemaalt välja.'

9 Ja Issand ütles Moosesele: 'Ma olen näinud seda rahvast, ja vaata, see on kangekaelne rahvas.

10 Jäta nüüd mind üksi, et mu viha saaks süttida põlema nende vastu ja ma saaksin nad hävitada! Aga sind ma teen suureks rahvaks.'

11 Mooses aga anus Issanda, oma Jumala ees ja ütles: 'Issand, miks süttib su viha põlema oma rahva vastu, kelle sa tõid Egiptusemaalt välja oma suure võimsuse ja vägeva käega?

12 Miks peaksid egiptlased rääkima ja ütlema: Kurja kavatsusega viis ta nad välja, et neid mägedes tappa ja maa pealt hävitada. Pöördu oma tulisest vihast ja kahetse kurja, mida sa kavatsed teha oma rahvale!

13 Meenuta oma sulaseid Aabrahami, Iisakit ja Iisraeli, kellele sa oled iseenese juures vandunud ja öelnud: Ma teen teie soo nõnda paljuks nagu tähti taevas; ja kogu selle maa, millest ma olen rääkinud, annan ma teie soole ja nad pärivad selle igaveseks.'

14 Ja Issand kahetses kurja, mida ta oli ähvardanud teha oma rahvale.

15 Ja Mooses pöördus ning astus mäelt alla, ja tal oli käes kaks tunnistuslauda, lauad, mille mõlema poole peale oli kirjutatud; neile oli kirjutatud nii ühe kui teise külje peale.

16 Lauad olid Jumala tehtud ja Jumala kirjutatud oli kiri, mis laudadesse oli uurendatud.

17 Kui Joosua kuulis rahva häält, valju karjumist, siis ta ütles Moosesele: 'Leeris on sõjakisa!'

18 Aga tema vastas: 'Ei see ole võiduhüüd, ei see ole kaotusekisa - mina kuulen lauluhäält.'

19 Ja kui Mooses ligines leerile ja nägi vasikat ning ringtantsu, siis ta viha süttis põlema ja ta viskas lauad käest ning purustas need mäejalamil.

20 Seejärel ta võttis vasika, mille nad olid teinud, ja põletas seda tules ning jahvatas, kuni see sai peeneks; siis ta puistas selle vette ja andis Iisraeli lastele juua.

21 Ja Mooses ütles Aaronile: 'Mida see rahvas sulle on teinud, et sa oled nende peale toonud nii suure patu?'

22 Aaron vastas: 'Ärgu süttigu mu isanda viha põlema! Sina ise tead, et see rahvas on paha.

23 Nad ütlesid mulle: Tee meile jumalad, kes käiksid meie ees, sest me ei tea, mis on juhtunud Moosesega, selle mehega, kes tõi meid Egiptusemaalt välja!

24 Ja mina ütlesin neile: Kellel on kulda, rebigu ära! Ja nad andsid selle minule, mina viskasin tulle ja välja tuli see vasikas.'

25 Kui Mooses nägi, et rahvas oli ohjest valla, sest Aaron oli ta valla päästnud kahjurõõmuks nende vaenlastele,

26 siis Mooses astus leeri väravasse ja ütles: 'Kes on Issanda poolt, tulgu minu juurde!' Ja tema juurde kogunesid kõik Leevi pojad.

27 Ja ta ütles neile: 'Nõnda ütleb Issand, Iisraeli Jumal: Igaüks pangu oma mõõk vööle! Käige edasi ja tagasi leeri väravast väravani ja tapke igaüks, olgu see ka oma vend, sõber või sugulane!'

28 Ja Leevi pojad tegid, nagu Mooses käskis; ja sel päeval langes rahva seast ligi kolm tuhat meest.

29 Ja Mooses ütles: 'Nad täitsid täna oma käed Issandale, sest igaüks oli oma poja ja venna vastu, selleks et teile täna õnnistus antaks!'

30 Ja järgmisel päeval ütles Mooses rahvale: 'Te olete teinud väga suurt pattu. Aga ma lähen nüüd üles Issanda juurde, vahest saan lepitada teie patu.'

31 Ja Mooses läks jälle Issanda juurde ning ütles: 'Oh häda! See rahvas on teinud suurt pattu ja on enesele valmistanud kuldjumalad.

32 Kui sa nüüd siiski annaksid andeks nende patu! Aga kui mitte, siis kustuta mind oma raamatust, mille oled kirjutanud!'

33 Aga Issand vastas Moosesele: 'Kes minu vastu on pattu teinud, selle ma kustutan oma raamatust.

34 Nüüd aga mine, juhi rahvas sinna paika, millest ma sulle olen rääkinud! Vaata, minu ingel käib su eel. Oma karistuspäeval ma karistan neid nende patu pärast.'

35 Ja Issand lõi rahvast, sellepärast et nad olid teinud vasika, mille Aaron valmistas.

10458. 'And it happened, as he came near the camp' means near to hell, in which that nation was then. This is clear from the meaning of 'the camp of the children of Israel' as heaven and the Church, dealt with in 4236, 10038, so that when they engaged in idolatrous worship, venerating the calf instead of Jehovah, their camp means hell. For what is representative of heaven and the Church is turned into that which is representative of hell when the people turned from the worship of God to worship of the devil, which worship of the calf was. 'The camp' has a similar meaning in Amos,

I have sent the pestilence upon you in the way of Egypt, I have killed your young men with the sword, along with your captured horses 1 , to such an extent that I have caused the stench of your camp to come up also into your nose. Amos 4:10.

This refers to the vastation of truth; and when truth has been laid waste 'the camp' means hell. The fact that it refers to the vastation of truth is evident from the specific details of the verse when looked at in the internal sense. 'The pestilence' means vastation, 7102, 7505; 'the way' means truth, and in the contrary sense falsity, 10422; 'Egypt' that which is external, and also hell, see in the places referred to in 10437; 'the sword' falsity engaged in conflict against truths, 2799, 4499, 6353, 7102, 8294; 'young men' the Church's truths, 7668; 'being killed' being destroyed spiritually, 6767, 8902; 'captivity' deprivation of truth, 7990; 'horses' an enlightened power of understanding, 2760-2762, 3217, 5321, 6125, 6534; and 'stench' that which is abominable, emanating from hell, 7161. From all this it is evident that in the internal sense 'the camp' means hell. Hell is also meant in the historical narratives of the Word by the camp of enemies opposed to Jerusalem, and in general of those opposed to the children of Israel.

6125. 'In exchange for horses' means factual knowledge supplied from the understanding. This is clear from the meaning of 'horses' as ideas forming the understanding, dealt with in 2760-2762, 3217, 5321; and since they are spoken of in connection with Egypt, which means factual knowledge, 'horses' here are factual knowledge supplied from the understanding. But what factual knowledge supplied from the understanding is must be stated. There is an understanding part and there is a will part in the human mind, and these are situated not only in his internal man but also in his external. The human understanding is developing and growing from early childhood through to manhood, and it consists in a discernment of things gained from experience and formal knowledge, also a discernment of causes from effects as well as of consequences from a chain of causes. Thus the understanding part consists in a comprehension and perception of such things as are part of everyday life, public and private. An inflowing of light from heaven brings it into existence, and for that reason everyone's understanding is capable of being made more perfect. Understanding is given to everyone in accordance with his effort to make use of what he knows, in accordance with the life he leads, and in accordance with his individual character; no one lacks it provided he is of sound mind. A person is given it to the end that he may have freedom of choice, that is, have the freedom to choose good or evil. Unless he possesses an understanding like the one just described, he has no power of his own to make that choice; thus nothing could possibly be made his own.

[2] In addition to this it should be recognized that the understanding part of a person's mind is that which receives what is spiritual, so that it is the recipient of spiritual truth and good. For no good at all, that is, no charity, nor any truth at all, that is, any faith, can be instilled into anyone if he does not have that understanding part; but they are instilled in the measure that he does have it. This also explains why a person is not regenerated by the Lord until adult life when he does possess an understanding. Till then the good of love and the truth of faith fall like seed into utterly infertile soil. But once a person has been regenerated his understanding serves the function of enabling him to see and perceive what good is and from this what truth is. For the understanding converts things belonging to the superior light of heaven into those belonging to the inferior light of the natural world, as a consequence of which the former are then seen within the latter in the same way as a person's inner affections are seen in his face when it lacks all pretence. And because the understanding serves that function, many places in the Word where the spiritual side of the Church is referred to refer also to its power of understanding, a matter which will in the Lord's Divine mercy be dealt with elsewhere.

[3] From all this one may now see what is meant by factual knowledge supplied from the understanding, namely known facts which lend support to the things a person grasps and perceives with his understanding, whether those things are bad or good. Such facts are what are meant in the Word by 'horses from Egypt', as in Isaiah,

Woe to those who go down into Egypt for help, and rely on horses and trust in chariots because they are many, and on horsemen because they are extremely strong, but do not look to the Holy One of Israel and do not seek Jehovah. For Egypt is man (homo), not God; and his horses are flesh, not spirit. Isaiah 31:1, 3.

'Horses from Egypt' stands for factual knowledge supplied from a perverted understanding.

[4] In Ezekiel,

He rebelled against him by sending his ambassadors to Egypt, that ha might give him horses and many people. Will he prosper? Will he who does this be rescued? Ezekiel 17:15.

'Horses from Egypt' again stands for factual knowledge supplied from a perverted understanding, which knowledge is resorted to in matters of faith, though there is no belief in the Word, that is, in the Lord, apart from what that knowledge provides. Thus no belief ever comes to exist, for within a perverted understanding a negative attitude reigns.

[5] The destruction which such factual knowledge underwent is represented by the drowning of Pharaoh's horses and chariots in the Sea Suph; and since that knowledge is meant by 'horses' and false matters of doctrine by 'chariots', his horses and chariots are mentioned so many times in the description of that event, see Exodus 14:17-18, 27, 26, 28. And the Song of Moses and Miriam consequently contains these words,

Pharaoh's horse went, also his chariot, also his horsemen, into the sea; but Jehovah made the waters of the sea come back over them. Sing to Jehovah, for He has highly exalted Himself; He has thrown the horse and its rider into the sea. Exodus 15:19, 21.

[6] Similar factual knowledge is also meant by the things required before-hand for a king over Israel, in Moses,

If they desire a king, from among their brothers shall a king be set over them. Only let him not multiply horses for himself nor lead the people back into Egypt in order to multiply horses. Deuteronomy 17:15-16.

'A king' represented the Lord as regards Divine Truth, 1672, 1728, 2015, 2069, 3009, 3670, 4575, 4581, 4789, 4966, 5044, 5068, thus as regards intelligence since this comes, when it is genuine, from Divine Truth. The need for intelligence to be acquired through the Word, which is Divine Truth, and not through factual knowledge taken from one's own understanding is meant by the injunction that the king should not multiply horses or lead the people back into Egypt in order to multiply horses.
