The "midst" of something in the Bible represents the thing that is most central and most important to the spiritual state being described, the motivation that drives everything else. In general this will be something we love or feel, because at the core of things we are what we love; our loves define us.

76. 5. Thine hand shall be lifted up upon thine adversaries, all thine enemies shall be cut off. Behold upon the mountains the feet of Him that bringeth good tidings, that publisheth peace! O Judah, keep thy feasts, perform thy vows, for belial shall no more pass through thee; everyone shall be cut off. The shield of his mighty men is made red, the men of might are in purple; the chariots shall be in the fire of torches in the day in which he hath prepared himself (Nahum 1:15; 2:1-3).
