In the second year of◦ Darius the king, in the sixth month, in the first◦ day of◦ the month, was the word of Jehovah by the hand of Haggai the prophet to▵ Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel, governor of Judah, and to▵ Joshua the son of Jehozadak, the great priest, saying,

Thus says Jehovah of Armies, saying: This people say, The time has not come, the time that Jehovah’s house should be built.

And the word of Jehovah was by the hand of Haggai the prophet, saying,

Is it time for you yourselves◦ to dwell in your paneled houses, and this house lie waste?
5
And now thus says Jehovah of Armies, Set your heart on your ways.
6
You have sown a multitude▵ of times, but bring··in little▵; you eat, but none are satisfied; you drink, but none drink··largely; you clothe yourselves, but none are warm; and he who earns··wages earns··wages into▵ a punctured bundle*.

Thus says Jehovah of Armies, Set your heart on your ways.

Go··up to the mountain, and bring wood, and build the house; and I will be··well··pleased in it, and I will be glorified, says Jehovah.

You turned· your ·face to▵ many things, and, behold, it came to a few; and when you brought· it ·into the house, I blew▵ it away. Because of what? says◦ Jehovah of Armies. Because of My house, which is a waste, and you◦ run, a man◦ to his own house.

Therefore the heavens over you are held··back from dew, and the earth held··back her produce.

And I called for a drought upon the land, and upon the mountains, and upon the grain, and upon the must*, and upon the olive··oil, and upon that which the ground brings··out, and upon man, and upon beast, and upon all the toil of the palms of the hands.

And Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel, and Joshua the son of Jehozadak, the great priest, and all who··are··left of the people, obeyed the voice of Jehovah their God, and the words of Haggai the prophet, as◦ Jehovah their God had sent him, and the people feared before Jehovah.

Then said Haggai, the messenger of Jehovah, in the message of Jehovah to the people, saying, I◦ am with◦ you, says◦ Jehovah.

And Jehovah stirred··up the spirit of Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel, governor of Judah, and the spirit of Joshua the son of Jehozadak, the great priest, and the spirit of all who··are··left of the people; and they came and did what was useful in the house of Jehovah of Armies, their God,

in the four and twentieth day of the sixth month, in the second year of Darius the king.
