That this signifies vessels of reception, is evident from the signification of a “pitcher,” which, being a vessel for the reception of water, is in the internal sense a recipient of the knowledges of truth, and also of truth itself, which is signified by “water.” (That “water” in the internal sense denotes knowledges, and also truth, may be seen above, n. 28, 680, 2680, 2702, 3058)

2680. Verse 15. And the water was spent out of the bottle, and she cast the child under one of the shrubs. “The water was spent out of the bottle,” signifies the desolation of truth; “and she cast the child under one of the shrubs,” signifies despair that nothing of truth and good was perceived.
