491. The same things are signified by “sons” and “daughters” in this chapter (verses 4, 7, 10, 13, 16, 19, 26, 30), but such as is the church, such are the “sons and daughters” that is, such are the goods and truths; the truths and goods here spoken of are such as were distinctly perceived, because they are predicated of the Most Ancient Church, the principal and parent of all the other and succeeding churches.

6720. 'She saw that he was good' means the discernment that it came by way of heaven. This is clear from the meaning of 'seeing' as a discernment, dealt with in 2150, 3764, 4567, 4723, 5400; and from the meaning of 'good' here, since it is used in reference to the law of God in the Lord, as coming by way of heaven. But as for the meaning here of 'good' as coming by way of heaven, this is an arcanum which none can know unless it is brought to light. When the Lord made His Human Divine, He did so by means of a transmission from the Divine through heaven. Heaven contributed nothing of itself to what was transmitted; but in order that the Divine itself might flow into the Human it passed through heaven. This transmission was the Divine Human before the Lord's Coming; it was Jehovah Himself in the heavens, who was the Lord. The Divine which passed through heaven was Divine Truth or Divine Law, which Moses represented; and the Divine which passes through heaven is good. From this one may see why it is that 'she saw that he (her son) was good' means the discernment that it came by way of heaven.

5400. 'And [Jacob] saw' means the things that constitute faith. This is clear from the meaning of 'seeing' as those things that constitute faith, dealt with in 897, 2325, 2807, 3863, 3869, 4403-4421. When it has no link whatsoever with such things as exist in the world, sight - that is, spiritual sight - is nothing else than a perception of truth, that is, of such things as constitute faith. Therefore 'seeing' has no other meaning in the internal sense; for the internal sense emerges when everything of a worldly nature is set aside; for the internal sense concerns itself with the kinds of things that belong to heaven.

[2] The light of heaven which enables one to see there is Divine Truth received from the Lord. This appears before angels' eyes as light a thousand times brighter than the light at midday in the world; and because it holds life within it, that light therefore brings sight to angels' understanding at the same time as it does so to their eyes, imparting a discernment of truth to them which is regulated by the amount and the nature of good present within them. Because this chapter deals in the internal sense with those things that constitute faith, that is, with the truths known to the Church, the verb 'saw' is used at the very beginning of the chapter, 'saw' meaning the things that constitute faith.
