1 AL mes tercero de la salida de los hijos de Israel de la tierra de Egipto, en aquel día vinieron al desierto de Sinaí.

2 Porque partieron de Rephidim, y llegaron al desierto de Sinaí, y asentaron en el desierto; y acampó allí Israel delante del monte.

3 Y Moisés subió á Dios; y Jehová lo llamó desde el monte, diciendo: Así dirás á la casa de Jacob, y denunciarás á los hijos de Israel:

4 Vosotros visteis lo que hice á los Egipcios, y cómo os tomé sobre alas de águilas, y os he traído á mí.

5 Ahora pues, si diereis oído á mi voz, y guardareis mi pacto, vosotros seréis mi especial tesoro sobre todos los pueblos; porque mía es toda la tierra.

6 Y vosotros seréis mi reino de sacerdotes, y gente santa. Estas son las palabras que dirás á los hijos de Israel.

7 Entonces vino Moisés, y llamó á los ancianos del pueblo, y propuso en presencia de ellos todas estas palabras que Jehová le había mandado.

8 Y todo el pueblo respondió á una, y dijeron: Todo lo que Jehová ha dicho haremos. Y Moisés refirió las palabras del pueblo á Jehová.

9 Y Jehová dijo á Moisés: He aquí, yo vengo á ti en una nube espesa, para que el pueblo oiga mientras yo hablo contigo, y también para que te crean para siempre. Y Moisés denunció las palabras del pueblo á Jehová.

10 Y Jehová dijo á Moisés: Ve al pueblo, y santifícalos hoy y mañana, y laven sus vestidos;

11 Y estén apercibidos para el día tercero, porque al tercer día Jehová descenderá, á ojos de todo el pueblo, sobre el monte de Sinaí.

12 Y señalarás término al pueblo en derredor, diciendo: Guardaos, no subáis al monte, ni toquéis á su término: cualquiera que tocare el monte, de seguro morirá:

13 No le tocará mano, mas será apedreado ó asaeteado; sea animal ó sea hombre, no vivirá. En habiendo sonado largamente la bocina, subirán al monte.

14 Y descendió Moisés del monte al pueblo, y santificó al pueblo; y lavaron sus vestidos.

15 Y dijo al pueblo: Estad apercibidos para el tercer día; no lleguéis á mujer.

16 Y aconteció al tercer día cuando vino la mañana, que vinieron truenos y relámpagos, y espesa nube sobre el monte, y sonido de bocina muy fuerte; y estremecióse todo el pueblo que estaba en el real.

17 Y Moisés sacó del real al pueblo á recibir á Dios; y pusiéronse á lo bajo del monte.

18 Y todo el monte de Sinaí humeaba, porque Jehová había descendido sobre él en fuego: y el humo de él subía como el humo de un horno, y todo el monte se estremeció en gran manera.

19 Y el sonido de la bocina iba esforzándose en extremo: Moisés hablaba, y Dios le respondía en voz.

20 Y descendió Jehová sobre el monte de Sinaí, sobre la cumbre del monte: y llamó Jehová á Moisés á la cumbre del monte, y Moisés subió.

21 Y Jehová dijo á Moisés: Desciende, requiere al pueblo que no traspasen el término por ver á Jehová, porque caerá multitud de ellos.

22 Y también los sacerdotes que se llegan á Jehová, se santifiquen, porque Jehová no haga en ellos estrago.

23 Y Moisés dijo á Jehová: El pueblo no podrá subir al monte de Sinaí, porque tú nos has requerido diciendo: Señala términos al monte, y santifícalo.

24 Y Jehová le dijo: Ve, desciende, y subirás tú, y Aarón contigo: mas los sacerdotes y el pueblo no traspasen el término por subir á Jehová, porque no haga en ellos estrago.

25 Entonces Moisés descendió al pueblo y habló con ellos.

78. As dead. That this signifies the failing of his own life, is evident from the signification of as dead, when the Divine presence with man is treated of, as being the failing of one's own life. For a man's own life is that into which he is born, which in itself is nothing but evil, for it is altogether inverted, regarding only itself and the world, and therefore turning itself backwards from God and from heaven. The life which is not man's own, is that into which he is led when he is regenerated by the Lord; and when he comes into this life, he looks to God and heaven in the first place, and himself and the world in the second. This life flows into man when the Lord is present; hence it is clear, that, so far as it flows in, so far there is effected a turning of the life; this turning, when it is effected suddenly, causes man to appear to himself as dead; hence it is that by these words is signified the failing of his own life. But these two states cannot be described to the apprehension; they are different also with man from what they are with a spirit, and they differ altogether with the evil and with the good.

[2] It is impossible for man to live in the body in the presence of the Divine; and they who do live are surrounded with a column of angels, which moderates the Divine influx; for the body of no man whatever is capable of receiving of the Divine, therefore it dies and is cast off. That man cannot live in the body in the presence of the Divine, is evident from the words of the Lord to Moses, "Thou canst not see my face; for there shall no man see me, and live" (Exodus 33:20); therefore Moses, because he desired to see Him, was placed in the hole of a rock, and covered until the Lord had passed by. It was known also to the ancients that man could not see God and live, as is evident from the book of Judges: "Manoah said unto his wife, Dying we shall die, because we have seen God" (13:22).

This was also testified among the sons of Israel, when the Lord was seen from Mount Sinai, concerning which it is thus written in Moses:

"Be ready against the third day; for the third day Jehovah will come down in the sight of all the people upon Mount Sinai. And thou shalt set bounds unto the people round about, saying, Take heed to yourselves that ye go not up into the mountain, or touch the border of it; whosoever toucheth the mountain, dying he shall die;" and because terror seized upon them, they said to Moses, "Speak thou with us, and we will hear; but let not God speak with us, lest we die" (Exodus 19:11, 12; 20:19).

(That by Mount Sinai is signified heaven, where the Lord is, and that by touching is signified to communicate, to transfer, and to receive, and that for this reason it was forbidden to touch the border of that mountain, may be seen in the explanation of that chapter in Arcana Coelestia.)

[3] The reason why Jehovah was seen by many, as recorded in the Word, was, that they were at the time surrounded with a column of spirits, and thus preserved, as said above; thus also the Lord has been oftentimes seen by me. But the state of spirits before the Divine presence differs from the state of man; spirits cannot die; therefore, if they are evil, they undergo a spiritual death at the Divine presence, the nature of which death will be presently described; but those who are good, are taken to societies, where the sphere of the Divine presence is tempered and accommodated to reception. This is why there are three heavens, and in each heaven many societies, and those who are in the higher heavens are nearer to the Lord, and those who are in the lower are more remote from Him (concerning this see what is said in the work, Heaven and Hell 20-28, 29-40, 41-50, 206-209). What the spiritual death is which evil spirits undergo at the Divine presence, shall be briefly stated.

[4] Spiritual death is an aversion and removal from the Lord; but, when evil spirits who are not yet vastated, that is, determined to their ruling love, enter any angelic society, then, because the Divine of the Lord is there present, they are direfully tortured, and not only avert themselves, but also cast themselves into the deep, where no light from heaven enters; some into dark caverns of rocks; in a word, into the hells (concerning this see what is shown in the work, Heaven and Hell 54, 400, 410, 525, 527). This aversion and removal from the Lord is called spiritual death; the spiritual of heaven is also dead with them.

527. I can testify from much experience that it is impossible to implant the life of heaven in those who in the world have lived a life opposite to the life of heaven. There were some who had believed that when after death they should hear Divine truths from the angels they would readily accept them and believe them, and consequently live a different life, and could thus be received into heaven. But this was tried with very many, although it was confined to those who held this belief, and was permitted in their case to teach them that repentance is not possible after death. Some of those with whom the experiment was made understood truths and seemed to accept them; but as soon as they turned to the life of their love they rejected them, and even spoke against them. Others were unwilling to hear them, and at once rejected them. Others wished to have the life of love that they had contracted from the world taken away from them, and to have the angelic life, or the life of heaven, infused in its place. This, too, was permitted to be done; but as soon as the life of their love was taken away they lay as if dead, with their powers gone. By these and other experiments the simple good were taught that no one's life can by any means be changed after death; and that an evil life can in no way be converted into a good life, or an infernal life into an angelic life, for every spirit from head to heel is such as his love is, and therefore such as his life is; and to convert his life into its opposite is to destroy the spirit completely. The angels declare that it would be easier to change a night-owl into a dove, or a horned-owl into a bird of paradise, than to change an infernal spirit into an angel of heaven. That man after death continues to be such as his life had been in the world can be seen above in its own chapter (470-484). From all this it is evident that no one can be received into heaven from mercy apart from means.
