1 Og Herren talte til Moses og sa:

2 Send avsted menn for å utspeide Kana'ans land, som jeg nu vil gi Israels barn! En mann for hver fedrenestamme skal I sende; hver av dem skal være En høvding blandt folket.

3 Da sendte Moses dem fra ørkenen Paran efter Herrens ord; alle var de overhoder for Israels barn.

4 Og dette var deres navn: For ubens stamme Sammua, Sakkurs sønn,

5 for Simeons stamme Safat, Horis sønn,

6 for Juda stamme Kaleb, Jefunnes sønn,

7 for Issakars stamme Jigeal, Josefs sønn,

8 for Efra'ims stamme Hosea, Nuns sønn,

9 for Benjamins stamme Palti, afus sønn,

10 for Sebulons stamme Gaddiel, Sodis sønn,

11 for Josefs stamme, for Manasse stamme Gaddi, Susis sønn,

12 for Dans stamme Ammiel, Gemallis sønn,

13 for Asers stamme Setur, Mikaels sønn,

14 for Naftali stamme Nahbi, Vofsis sønn,

15 for Gads stamme Ge'uel, Makis sønn.

16 Dette var navnene på de menn som Moses sendte for å utspeide landet; men Moses gav Hosea, Nuns sønn, navnet Josva.

17 Og Moses sendte dem for å utspeide Kana'ans land, og han sa til dem: Dra op her til sydlandet og stig op i fjellene

18 og se hvordan landet er, og om folket som bor der, er sterkt eller svakt, om det er lite eller stort,

19 og hvordan det land er som det bor i, om det er godt eller dårlig, og hvordan de byer er som det bor i, om det bor i leire eller i festninger,

20 og hvordan jorden er, om den er fet eller mager, om det er trær der eller ikke! Vær ved godt mot og ta med eder av landets frukt! Det var nettop på den tid de første druer blev modne.

21 Så drog de da op og utspeidet landet fra ørkenen Sin til ehob, bortimot Hamat.

22 De drog op til sydlandet og kom til Hebron; der bodde Akiman, Sesai og Talmai, Anaks barn - Hebron var bygget syv år før Soan i Egypten.

23 kom de til Eskol-dalen; der skar de av en vinranke med en drueklase, og den bar to mann mellem sig på en stang; likeledes tok de granatepler og fikener.

24 Dette sted blev kalt Eskol-dalen* efter den drueklase som Israels barn skar av der. / {* d.e. drueklasens dal.}

25 Da firti dager var til ende, vendte de tilbake efter å ha utspeidet landet.

26 De gikk avsted og fant Moses og Aron og hele Israels barns menighet i ørkenen Paran, i Kades, og gav dem og hele menigheten beskjed om hvad de hadde sett, og viste dem landets frukt.

27 De fortalte ham og sa: Vi kom til det land du sendte oss til, og det flyter virkelig med melk og honning, og her er dets frukt.

28 Men det folk som bor i landet, er sterkt, og byene er som festninger og meget store; der så vi også Anaks barn.

29 Amalekittene bor i sydlandet, og hetittene og jebusittene og amorittene bor i fjellbygdene, og kana'anittene bor ute ved havet og langsmed Jordan.

30 Men da folket knurret mot Moses, søkte Kaleb å stagge dem og sa: Vi vil dra op og ta landet i eie; vi skal nok få det i vår makt.

31 Men de menn som hadde vært med ham der op, sa: Vi makter ikke å dra op mot det folk; for det er sterkere enn vi.

32 Og de talte ille blandt Israels barn om det land de hadde utspeidet, og sa: Det land vi drog igjennem for å utspeide det, er et land som fortærer* sine innbyggere, og alle de vi så der, var høivoksne folk; / {* ved de kriger som føres der.}

33 der så vi kjempene, Anaks barn av kjempeætten, og mot dem var vi i våre egne øine som gresshopper, og det syntes også de at vi var.

8351. 'And the people grumbled against Moses' means grief caused by the bitterness of the temptation. This is clear from the meaning of 'grumbling' as complaint, the kind made in temptations, thus grief caused by the bitterness of the temptation. The temptations which those belonging to the Lord's spiritual Church underwent after they had been delivered from molestations, in addition to the temptations which members of that Church are destined to undergo, are described by the grumblings of the children of Israel in the wilderness. And since spiritual temptations are as a general rule protracted till a person is in despair, 1787, 2694, 5279, 5280, 7147, 7166, 8165, 'grumbling' means complaint because of grief felt in temptations, as in Exodus 16:2-3; 17:3; Numbers 14:27, 29, 36; 16:11. The words 'against Moses' are used because it was a grumbling against what was Divine; for 'Moses' represents Divine Truth, 6723, 6752, 6771, 6827, 7010, 7014, 7089, 7382.

[2] As regards the temptations which those belonging to the spiritual Church underwent, and the temptations which members of that Church are destined to undergo, it should be recognized that no faith, nor thus any charity, can ever be instilled into those who belong to the spiritual Church except by means of temptations. In temptations a person is involved in conflict against falsity and evil. These - falsity and evil - flow into the external man from the hells, while goodness and truth flow in from the Lord by way of the internal man; and so there arises from a conflict of the internal man with the external that which is called temptation. And in the measure that the external man is brought into a state of obedience to the internal, faith and charity are instilled; for the external or natural level of a person is a receptacle of truth and good from the internal. If the receptacle is not properly adjusted it does not receive anything flowing in from the more internal level but either repels, destroys, or stifles it, as a consequence of which there is no regeneration. So it is that temptation is necessary, in order that a person may undergo regeneration, which is effected through the instillation of faith and charity, and thereby through the formation of a new will and new understanding. This also explains why the term 'militant' is applied to the Lord's Church. 6574. 'To bestow life on a great people' means that life is thereby imparted to those governed by the truths of good. This is clear from the meaning of 'bestowing life' as spiritual life, dealt with in 5890, 6032; and from the meaning of 'people' as truth, dealt with in 1259, 1260, 3295, 3581, 4619, here the truth of good since the expression 'a great people' is used; for truth that is derived from good is greater than truth giving rise to good. The former kind of truth - that which is derived from good - is in essence good because it is formed from good, and so is good in its own form.

[2] The words which Joseph spoke now to his brothers - You thought evil against me; God thought [to turn] it into good, in order to do what is in accord with this day, to bestow life on a great people - are words that contain an arcanum of heaven. The arcanum they contain is this: The Lord allows the hells in the next life to lead the good into temptation, consequently to introduce falsities and evils. They also put all they have into doing this, for when they are doing it, they are in their element and are enjoying it. But at that time the Lord Himself is present directly - and by means of angels indirectly - with those undergoing temptation and is offering resistance by refuting the falsities of the spirits from hell and dispersing their evil. From this come renewal, hope, and victory. In this way the truths of faith and forms of the good of charity present with those who are governed by the truths of good are implanted more deeply and strengthened more firmly.

[3] From this one may see what is meant in the internal sense by the words in this verse, namely this: Those who have become alienated from truth and good, as the spirits who bring about temptations have, intend nothing but evil. But the Divine turns that evil into good, in accord with order existing from eternity; and life is thereby imparted to those governed by the truths of good. For it should be recognized that the spirits from hell who are allowed to attack the good in that way intend nothing but evil. They wish with all their might to drag them down from heaven and cast them into hell; for to destroy anyone's soul, thus to destroy him forever, is the sheer delight of their life. But they are not allowed by the Lord to do anything at all except for the sake of the end that good may come out of it, that is to say, so that truth and good may be made firmer and stronger with those who undergo temptation. In the entire spiritual world there reigns the end in view, emanating from the Lord, that nothing whatever should take place, not even the smallest thing, except in order that good may come out of it. This is why the Lord's kingdom is called a kingdom of ends and useful purposes.
