Hesekiel 36

1 Und du, Menschenkind, weissage den Bergen Israels und sprich: Höret des HERRN Wort ihr Berge Israels!

2 So spricht der HERR HERR: Darum daß der Feind über euch rühmt: Ha! die ewigen Höhen sind nun unser Erbe geworden!

3 darum weissage und sprich: So spricht der HERR HERR: Weil man euch allenthalben verwüstet und vertilgt, und ihr seid den übrigen Heiden zuteil geworden und seid den Leuten ins Maul gekommen und ein böses Geschrei geworden,

4 darum hört, ihr Berge Israels, das Wort des HERRN HERRN! So spricht der HERR HERR zu den Bergen und Hügeln, zu den Bächen und Tälern, zu den öden Wüsten und verlassenen Städten, welche den übrigen Heiden ringsumher zum Raub und Spott geworden sind:

5 ja, so spricht der HERR HERR: Ich habe in meinem feurigen Eifer geredet wider die Heiden und wider das ganze Edom, welche mein Land eingenommen haben mit Freuden von ganzem Herzen und mit Hohnlachen, es zu verheeren und zu plündern.

6 Darum weissage von dem Lande Israel und sprich zu den Bergen und Hügeln, zu den Bächen und Tälern: So spricht der HERR HERR: Siehe, ich habe in meinem Eifer und Grimm geredet, weil ihr solche Schmach von den Heiden tragen müsset.

7 Darum spricht der HERR HERR also: Ich hebe meine Hand auf, daß eure Nachbarn, die Heiden umher, ihre Schande tragen sollen.

8 Aber ihr Berge Israels sollt wieder grünen und eure Frucht bringen meinem Volk Israel; und es soll in kurzem geschehen.

9 Denn siehe, ich will mich wieder zu euch wenden und euch ansehen, daß ihr gebaut und besät werdet;

10 und will bei euch der Leute viel machen, das ganze Israel allzumal; und die Städte sollen wieder bewohnt und die Wüsten erbaut werden.

11 Ja, ich will bei euch der Leute und des Viehs viel machen, daß sie sich mehren und wachsen sollen. Und ich will euch wieder bewohnt machen wie vorher und will euch mehr Gutes tun denn zuvor je; und ihr sollt erfahren, daß ich der HERR sei.

12 Ich will euch Leute herzubringen, mein Volk Israel, die werden dich besitzen; und sollst ihr Erbteil sein und sollst sie nicht mehr ohne Erben machen.

13 So spricht der HERR HERR: Weil man das von euch sagt: Du hast Leute gefressen und hast dein Volk ohne Erben gemacht,

14 darum sollst du nun nicht mehr Leute fressen noch dein Volk ohne Erben machen, spricht der HERR HERR.

15 Und ich will dich nicht mehr lassen hören die Schmähung der Heiden, und sollst den Spott der Heiden nicht mehr tragen und sollst dein Volk nicht mehr ohne Erben machen, spricht der HERR HERR.

16 Und des HERRN Wort geschah weiter zu mir:

17 Du Menschenkind, da das Haus Israel in seinem Lande wohnte und es verunreinigte mit seinem Wesen und Tun, daß ihr Wesen vor mir war wie die Unreinigkeit eines Weibes in ihrer Krankheit,

18 da schüttete ich meinen Grimm über sie aus um des Blutes willen, das sie im Lande vergossen, und weil sie es verunreinigt hatten durch ihre Götzen.

19 Und ich zerstreute sie unter die Heiden und zerstäubte sie in die Länder und richtete sie nach ihrem Wesen und Tun.

20 Und sie hielten sich wie die Heiden, zu denen sie kamen, und entheiligten meinen heiligen Namen, daß man von ihnen sagte: Ist das des HERRN Volk, das aus seinem Lande hat müssen ziehen?

21 Aber ich schonte meines heiligen Namens, welchen das Haus Israel entheiligte unter den Heiden, dahin sie kamen.

22 Darum sollst du zum Hause Israel sagen: So spricht der HERR HERR: Ich tue es nicht um euretwillen, ihr vom Hause Israel, sondern um meines heiligen Namens willen, welchen ihr entheiligt habt unter den Heiden, zu welchen ihr gekommen seid.

23 Denn ich will meinen großen Namen, der vor den Heiden entheiligt ist, den ihr unter ihnen entheiligt habt, heilig machen. Und die Heiden sollen erfahren, daß ich der HERR sei, spricht der HERR HERR, wenn ich mich vor ihnen an euch erzeige, daß ich heilig sei.

24 Denn ich will euch aus den Heiden holen und euch aus allen Landen versammeln und wieder in euer Land führen.

25 Und will reines Wasser über euch sprengen, daß ihr rein werdet; von all eurer Unreinigkeit und von allen euren Götzen will ich euch reinigen.

26 Und ich will euch ein neues Herz und einen neuen Geist in euch geben und will das steinerne Herz aus eurem Fleische wegnehmen und euch ein fleischernes Herz geben;

27 ich will meinen Geist in euch geben und will solche Leute aus euch machen, die in meinen Geboten wandeln und meine Rechte halten und darnach tun.

28 Und ihr sollt wohnen im Lande, das ich euren Vätern gegeben habe, und sollt mein Volk sein, und ich will euer Gott sein.

29 Ich will euch von aller Unreinigkeit losmachen und will dem Korn rufen und will es mehren und will euch keine Teuerung kommen lassen.

30 Ich will die Früchte auf den Bäumen und das Gewächs auf dem Felde mehren, daß euch die Heiden nicht mehr verspotten mit der Teuerung.

31 Alsdann werdet ihr an euer böses Wesen gedenken und an euer Tun, das nicht gut war, und wird euch eure Sünde und Abgötterei gereuen.

32 Solches will ich tun, nicht um euretwillen, spricht der HERR HERR, daß ihr's wißt; sondern ihr werdet schamrot werden, ihr vom Hause Israel, über eurem Wesen.

33 So spricht der HERR HERR: Zu der Zeit, wann ich euch reinigen werde von allen euren Sünden, so will ich die Städte wieder besetzen, und die Wüsten sollen wieder gebaut werden.

34 Das verwüstete Land soll wieder gepflügt werden, dafür es verheert war; daß es sehen sollen alle, die dadurchgehen,

35 und sagen: Dies Land war verheert, und jetzt ist's wie der Garten Eden; und diese Städte waren zerstört, öde und zerrissen, und stehen nun fest gebaut.

36 Und die Heiden, so um euch her übrigbleiben werden, sollen erfahren, daß ich der HERR bin, der da baut, was zerrissen ist, und pflanzt, was verheert war. Ich, der HERR, sage es und tue es auch.

37 So spricht der HERR HERR: Auch darin will ich mich vom Hause Israel finden lassen, daß ich es ihnen erzeige: ich will die Menschen bei ihnen mehren wie eine Herde.

38 Wie eine heilige Herde, wie eine Herde zu Jerusalem auf ihren Festen, so sollen die verheerten Städte voll Menschenherden werden und sollen erfahren, daß ich der HERR bin.

832. 19:18 "That you may eat the flesh of kings, the flesh of commanders, the flesh of mighty men, the flesh of horses and of those who sit on them, and the flesh of all people, free and slave, both small and great." This symbolizes an assimilation of goods from the Lord through the truths in the Word and in doctrine drawn from it, of every level of meaning, degree or kind.

The subject of no. 831 above was conjunction with the Lord through the Word, and now here it is the assimilation of goods from Him through the Word's truths.

To eat symbolically means to assimilate (no. 89). The flesh the people were to eat symbolizes goods in the Word and so in the church. And kings, commanders, mighty men, horses and those who sit on them, and people, free and slave, both small and great symbolize truths of every level of meaning, degree or kind. Kings symbolize people governed by the church's truths from the Word, and abstractly the church's truths from the Word themselves (nos. 20, 483). Commanders symbolize people who possess concepts of goodness and truth, and abstractly those concepts themselves (no. 337). Mighty men symbolize people who are learned in doctrine from the Word, and abstractly the learning gained from there itself (nos. 337). Horses symbolize an understanding of the Word, and those who sit on them symbolize people who are wise owing to their understanding of the Word, and abstractly the wisdom gained from there itself (nos. 298, 820). People free and slave symbolize people who acquire knowledge on their own and people who gain it from others (nos. 337, 604). People small and great symbolize people who do so to a lesser or greater degree (nos. 527, 810).

It is apparent from this that the people's being called to eat the flesh of those listed symbolizes an assimilation of goods from the Lord through the truths in the Word and in doctrine drawn from it, of every level of meaning, degree or kind.

[2] It should be known that no one has any spiritual good from the Lord except through truths from the Word. For the Word's truths exist in the light of heaven, and goods in the warmth of that light. Consequently unless one's intellect is in the light of heaven through the Word, his will cannot enter into the warmth of heaven. Love and charity cannot take form except through truths from the Word. A person cannot be reformed except through truths from the Word. The church itself takes form in a person in consequence of those truths - not in consequence of those truths in the intellect alone, but by living in accordance with them. Only then do truths enter into the will and become goods. The appearance of truth is thus turned into the appearance of good. For what pertains to the will and so to the love is called good, and everything pertaining to the will or love is also part of a person's life.

It can be seen from this that what is meant here by eating the flesh of those listed is an assimilation of goodness through truths of every level of meaning, degree or kind, through the Word, from the Lord.

Who cannot see that flesh here does not mean flesh? Who can be so irrational as to believe that the Lord calls and summons all people to a great supper in order to have them eat the flesh of kings, commanders, mighty men, horses, those who sit on them, and all people, free and slave, both small and great? Who cannot see that there is in this a spiritual meaning, and that apart from that meaning no one knows what is meant here? Who can continue to deny that the Word at its heart is spiritual? Would it not be no more than something material if people were to understand it according to its literal sense and not according to the spiritual sense?

[3] Similar to the passage here is the following one in Ezekiel:

...thus says the Lord Jehovih, "Speak to every sort of bird and to every beast of the field: 'Gather yourselves and come; gather together from all sides to My... great sacrificial meal on the mountains of Israel, that you may eat flesh and drink blood. You shall eat the flesh of the mighty, and drink the blood of the princes of the earth... You shall eat fat till you are full, and drink blood till you are drunk, at My sacrificial meal which I am sacrificing for you. You shall be filled at My table with horses and chariots and... with all the men of war... (Thus) will I set My glory among the nations." (Ezekiel 39:17-21)

Flesh here likewise symbolizes the church's goodness from the Lord through the Word, and blood the church's truth.

Who does not see that people would not be given blood to drink to the point of drunkenness, and would not eat horses, chariots, mighty men, and men of war till they were full, at the table of the Lord Jehovih?

Accordingly, when flesh symbolizes the church's goodness and blood the church's truth, it is clearly apparent that the Lord's flesh and blood in holy supper symbolize Divine goodness and Divine truth from the Lord, the same as bread and wine, regarding which see John 6:51-58. 1

Flesh symbolizes goodness in many other places in the Word as well, as in the following:

I will... remove the heart of stone from their flesh, and give them a heart of flesh... (Ezekiel 11:19, cf. 36:26)

My flesh longs for You in a dry... land... (Psalms 63:1)

My heart and my flesh shout aloud for the living God. (Psalms 84:2)

My flesh... will dwell secure. (Psalms 16:9)

When you see the naked and cover him, and do not hide yourself from your own flesh... (Isaiah 58:7)

Apocalypse Revealed # 20

20. And makes us kings and priests. (1:6) This symbolically means, who grants those who are born from Him, that is, who are reborn or regenerated, to be governed by wisdom from Divine truths, and by love from Divine goods.

People know that in the Word the Lord is called a king and also a priest. He is called a king owing to His Divine wisdom, and a priest owing to His Divine love. People who are governed by wisdom from the Lord are consequently called children of the king, and also kings, while people who are governed by love from Him are called ministers and priests. For the wisdom and the love in them do not originate from them, and so are not theirs but the Lord's. It is these people who are therefore meant in the Word by kings and priests. Not that they are kings and priests, but that they have the Lord in them, and He causes them to be termed such.

Such people are called also children born of Him, children of the kingdom, children of the Father, and heirs - children born of Him in John 1:12-13ff.), children of the kingdom in Matthew 8:12; 13:38, children of their Father in heaven in Matthew 5:45, and heirs in Psalms 127:3, 1 Samuel 2:8, Matthew 25:34. And being heirs, children of the kingdom, and children born of the Lord as their Father, they are therefore called kings and priests. Moreover, in Revelation 3:21 it is also said that they will sit with the Lord on His throne.

[2] The whole of heaven has been divided into two kingdoms - the spiritual kingdom and the celestial kingdom. The spiritual kingdom is what is called the Lord's kingship, and because all who are in it are governed by wisdom founded on truths, therefore it is they who are meant by the kings that the Lord will make those people who are governed by wisdom from Him. The celestial kingdom, on the other hand, is what is called the Lord's priesthood, and because all who are in it are governed by love arising from goodness, therefore it is they who are meant by the priests that the Lord will make those people who are governed by love from Him. The Lord's church on earth is likewise divided into two kingdoms. Regarding these two kingdoms, see nos. 24, 226 in the book Heaven and Hell, published in London, 1758.

[3] Someone who does not know the spiritual meaning of kings and priests may be deluded in regard to many things said in the prophets and in the book of Revelation about them. For example, in regard to these statements in the prophets:

The sons of foreigners shall build up your walls, and their kings shall minister to you... You shall suck the milk of gentiles, even the breasts of kings you shall suck, that you may know that I, Jehovah, am your Savior and your Redeemer... (Isaiah 60:10, 16)

Kings shall be your foster fathers, and their princesses your wet nurses. (Isaiah 49:23)

Also elsewhere, as in Genesis 49:20; Psalms 2:10; Isaiah 14:9; 24:21; 52:15; Jeremiah 2:26; 4:9; 49:3; Lamentations 2:6, 9; Ezekiel 7:26-27; Hosea 3:4; Zephaniah 1:8. Kings there do not mean kings, but people who are governed by Divine truths from the Lord, and abstractly, Divine truths themselves, from which comes wisdom.

"The king of the south" and "the king of the north" who waged war with each other in Daniel 11 do not mean kings either, but the king of the south means people who are governed by truths, and the king of the north people who are caught up in falsities.

[4] Likewise in the book of Revelation, which many times mentions kings, as in the following passages:

The sixth angel poured out his bowl on the great river Euphrates, and its water was dried up, so that the way of the kings from the rising of the sun might be prepared. (Revelation 16:12)

(With) the great harlot who sits on many waters... the kings of the earth committed whoredom... (Revelation 17:1-2)

...of the wine of the wrath of (Babylon's) whoredom all the nations have drunk, and the kings of the earth have committed whoredom with her... (Revelation 18:3)

And I saw the beast, and the kings of the earth, and their armies, gathered together to make war with Him who sat on the (white) horse... (Revelation 19:19)

And the nations that are saved shall walk in His light, and the kings of the earth shall bring their glory and honor into (the New Jerusalem). (Revelation 21:24)

Elsewhere also, as in Revelation 16:14; 17:9-14; 18:9-10. The kings there means people who are governed by truths, and in an opposite sense, people caught up in falsities, and abstractly, truths or falsities themselves. The whoredom of Babylon with the kings of the earth means the falsification of the truth of the church. Obviously Babylon, or the woman who sat on the scarlet beast, did not commit whoredom with kings, but rather falsified truths of the Word.

[5] It is apparent from this that the Lord's going to make people who are wise from Him kings does not mean that they will be kings, but that they will be wise. The reality of this is also something that enlightened reason sees.

Likewise in the following:

You have made us kings and priests to our God, that we may reign on the earth. (Revelation 5:10)

That by king the Lord meant truth is apparent from His words to Pilate:

Pilate... said to Him, "Are You a king then?"

Jesus answered, "As you have said, because I am a king. For this I was born, and for this I have come into the world, to bear witness to the truth. Everyone who is of the truth hears My voice."

Pilate said to Him, "What is truth?" (John 18:27, 38)

To bear witness to the truth is to be Himself the embodiment of truth. And because He called Himself a king by virtue of it, Pilate said, "What is truth?" - which is to say, "Is truth a king?

As for priests, we will see in later explanations that they symbolize people who are governed by the goodness of love, and abstractly, goods of love themselves.
