1 Und sollst einen Altar machen von Föhrenholz, fünf Ellen lang und breit, daß er gleich viereckig sei, und drei Ellen hoch.

2 Hörner sollst du auf seine vier Ecken machen, und sollst ihn mit Erz überziehen.

3 Mache auch Aschentöpfe, Schaufeln, Becken, Kreuel, Kohlpfannen; alle seine Geräte sollst du von Erz machen.

4 Du sollst auch ein ehern Gitter machen wie ein Netz und vier eherne Ringe an seine vier Orte.

5 Du sollst es aber von unten auf um den Altar machen, daß das Gitter reiche bis mitten an den Altar.

6 Und sollst auch Stangen machen zu dem Altar von Föhrenholz, mit Erz überzogen.

7 Und sollst die Stangen in die Ringe tun, daß die Stangen seien an beiden Seiten des Altars, damit man ihn tragen möge.

8 Und sollst ihn also von Brettern machen, daß er inwendig hohl sei, wie dir auf dem Berge gezeiget ist.

9 Du sollst auch der Wohnung einen Hof machen, einen Umhang von gezwirnter weißer Seide, auf einer Seite hundert Ellen lang, gegen dem Mittag,

10 Und zwanzig Säulen auf zwanzig ehernen Füßen, und ihre Knäufe mit ihren Reifen von Silber.

11 Also auch gegen Mitternacht soll sein ein Umhang, hundert Ellen lang; zwanzig Säulen auf zwanzig ehernen Füßen, und ihre Knäufe mit ihren Reifen von Silber.

12 Aber gegen dem Abend soll die Breite des Hofes haben einen Umhang fünfzig Ellen lang, zehn Säulen auf zehn Füßen.

13 Gegen dem Morgen aber soll die Breite des Hofes haben fünfzig Ellen,

14 also daß der Umhang habe auf einer Seite fünfzehn Ellen, dazu drei Säulen auf dreien Füßen,

15 und aber fünfzehn Ellen auf der andern Seite, dazu drei Säulen auf dreien Füßen.

16 Aber in dem Tor des Hofes soll ein Tuch sein, zwanzig Ellen breit, gewirket von gelber Seide, Scharlaken, Rosinrot und gezwirnter weißer Seide, dazu vier Säulen auf ihren vier Füßen.

17 Alle Säulen um den Hof her sollen silberne Reife und silberne Knäufe und eherne Füße haben.

18 Und die Länge des Hofes soll hundert Ellen sein, die Breite fünfzig Ellen, die Höhe fünf Ellen, von gezwirnter weißer Seide; und seine Füße sollen ehern sein.

19 Auch alle Geräte der Wohnung zu allerlei Amt und alle seine Nägel und alle Nägel des Hofes sollen ehern sein.

20 Gebeut den Kindern Israel, daß sie zu dir bringen das allerreinste lautere Öl von Ölbäumen gestoßen, zur Leuchte, das man allezeit oben in die Lampen tue

21 in der Hütte des Stifts außer dem Vorhang, der vor dem Zeugnis hanget. Und Aaron und seine Söhne sollen sie zurichten, beide des Morgens und des Abends, vor dem HERRN. Das soll euch eine ewige Weise sein auf eure Nachkommen unter den Kindern Israel.

8351. 'And the people grumbled against Moses' means grief caused by the bitterness of the temptation. This is clear from the meaning of 'grumbling' as complaint, the kind made in temptations, thus grief caused by the bitterness of the temptation. The temptations which those belonging to the Lord's spiritual Church underwent after they had been delivered from molestations, in addition to the temptations which members of that Church are destined to undergo, are described by the grumblings of the children of Israel in the wilderness. And since spiritual temptations are as a general rule protracted till a person is in despair, 1787, 2694, 5279, 5280, 7147, 7166, 8165, 'grumbling' means complaint because of grief felt in temptations, as in Exodus 16:2-3; 17:3; Numbers 14:27, 29, 36; 16:11. The words 'against Moses' are used because it was a grumbling against what was Divine; for 'Moses' represents Divine Truth, 6723, 6752, 6771, 6827, 7010, 7014, 7089, 7382.

[2] As regards the temptations which those belonging to the spiritual Church underwent, and the temptations which members of that Church are destined to undergo, it should be recognized that no faith, nor thus any charity, can ever be instilled into those who belong to the spiritual Church except by means of temptations. In temptations a person is involved in conflict against falsity and evil. These - falsity and evil - flow into the external man from the hells, while goodness and truth flow in from the Lord by way of the internal man; and so there arises from a conflict of the internal man with the external that which is called temptation. And in the measure that the external man is brought into a state of obedience to the internal, faith and charity are instilled; for the external or natural level of a person is a receptacle of truth and good from the internal. If the receptacle is not properly adjusted it does not receive anything flowing in from the more internal level but either repels, destroys, or stifles it, as a consequence of which there is no regeneration. So it is that temptation is necessary, in order that a person may undergo regeneration, which is effected through the instillation of faith and charity, and thereby through the formation of a new will and new understanding. This also explains why the term 'militant' is applied to the Lord's Church. 5356. 'In the land of my affliction' means where the temptations were undergone. This is clear from the meaning of 'the land', in this case the land of Egypt, as the natural, dealt with in 5276, 5278, 5280, 5288, 5301; and from the meaning of 'affliction' as temptation, dealt with in 1846. From these meanings it is evident that 'in the land of my affliction' means in the natural where the temptations were undergone and therefore the place where truth from good was multiplied. Since that fruitfulness, or multiplication of truth from good, is brought about primarily by means of temptations, such words have therefore been used here. The reason why fruitfulness is brought about primarily by means of temptations is that temptations take away self-love and love of the world, and so evils too; and once these have been taken away, an affection for goodness and truth from the Lord flows in, see just above in 5354.

[2] Another thing temptations do is to provide a person with the kind of discernment he has about what is good and true; they provide it through the opposites that evil spirits introduce at such times. From his discernment of those opposites a person can make comparisons which enable him to see what the whole is like. For no one can know what good is unless he also knows what is not good; and he does not know what truth is unless he knows what is not true. Also, temptations serve to strengthen goods and truths; for in temptations a person battles against evils and falsities, and through being victorious in such he goes on to hold on more firmly to those goods and truths. In addition to this temptations also serve to subdue evils and falsities so completely that they do not dare to rise up again. Thus temptations serve to cast evils and falsities away to the fringes, where they hang downwards, in a limp condition. But forms of good together with truths are in the centre, and in the measure that the zeal of genuine affection is present they are raised upwards - up to heaven, towards the Lord who does the raising up.
