Zaphenath Paneah

In Genesis 41:45, when Pharaoh elevates Joseph to be the second-ruler of all Egypt, he calls Joseph's name 'Zaphenath Paneah'. In the Word, naming means seeing the essential nature of something. And, in Hebrew, Zaphenath Paneah means "the revealer of things that are hidden and the discloser of things to come". (Arcana Coelestia 5331)

Joseph, with the name Zaphenath Paneah, represents the celestial that comes from the spiritual. Again, from Arcana Coelestia 5331: "... the celestial of the spiritual is the good of truth that has the Divine within it; that is, it is what flows directly from the Divine." In everyday language, this might be a way to say it: When true spiritual understanding exists, genuine heavenly good can grow from it. Pharaoh and Egypt stand for natural truth, e.g., knowledge about the natural world. Joseph brings a new dimension to Egypt: real spiritual truth that will be a source of heavenly good. His added name, Zaphenath Paneah, signifies that.
