In Joshua 8:1-29, Ai signifies knowledge of good, and in the contrary sense confirmations of evil. (Apocalypse Explained 655[8])

In Genesis 12:8, Ai signifies part of the Lord's fourth state in advancing from obscurity to light. (Arcana Coelestia 1401)

In Genesis 12:8, Ai signifies that the Lord's state was still obscure, for Ai signifies the knowledges of worldly things, in spite of being on the east. (Arcana Coelestia 1453)

8 He left from there to the mountain on the east of Bethel, and pitched his tent, having Bethel on the west, and Ai on the east. There he built an altar to Yahweh and called on the name of Yahweh.
