1 Vả, khi các việc đó qua rồi, có người nói cùng Giô-sép rằng: Nầy cha người đau; Giô-sép bèn đem Ma-na-se và Ép-ra-im, hai đứa con trai mình, cùng đi đến.

2 Họ cho Gia-cốp hay và nói rằng: Nầy Giô-sép, con trai ông, đến thăm ông đó; Y-sơ-ra-ên cố gượng ngồi dậy trên giường.

3 Gia-cốp nói cùng Giô-sép rằng: Ðức Chúa Trời toàn năng đã hiện ra, bà ban phước cho cha tại Lu-xơ, trong xứ Ca-na-an,

4 mà phán rằng: Nầy ta sẽ làm cho ngươi sanh sản và thêm nhiều, làm thành một hội dân; ta sẽ cho dòng dõi ngươi xứ nầy làm cơ nghiệp đời đời.

5 Bây giờ, hai đứa con trai đã sanh cho con tại xứ Ê-díp-tô trước khi cha đến, là Ép-ra-im và Ma-na-se, cũng sẽ thuộc về cha như u-bên và Si-mê-ôn vậy.

6 Còn mấy đứa mà con sanh kế đó, thì sẽ thuộc về con; về phần hưởng cơ nghiệp, chúng nó sẽ đồng một thể cùng anh em mình.

7 Khi cha ở Pha-đan trở về xứ Ca-na-an, thì a-chên chết dọc đường có mặt cha, gần Ê-phơ-rát; cha chôn người ở bên con đường đi về Ê-phơ-rát (tức là Bết-lê-hem).

8 Y-sơ-ra-ên thấy các con trai Giô-sép, bèn hỏi rằng: Những đứa nầy là ai?

9 Giô-sép thưa rằng: Ấy là những con trai của con mà Ðức Chúa Trời đã cho tại xứ nầy. Y-sơ-ra-ên lại nói: Xin hãy đem đến đây, đặng cha chúc phước cho chúng nó.

10 Vả, mắt của Y-sơ-ra-ên già nên làng, chẳng thấy chi nữa, bèn biểu chúng nó lại gần, ôm choàng và hôn.

11 Y-sơ-ra-ên nói cùng Giô-sép rằng: Trước cha tưởng chẳng còn thấy được mặt con, nhưng bây giờ Ðức Chúa Trời lại làm cho cha thấy được đến dòng dõi con nữa.

12 Giô-sép dẫn hai đứa con trai ra khỏi hai đầu gối cha mình, rồi sấp mình xuống đất.

13 Ðoạn, người dẫn hai đứa trẻ lại gần cha; tay hữu thì dẫn Ép-ra-im sang qua phía tả của cha, còn tay tả dắt Ma-na-se sang qua phía hữu.

14 Y-sơ-ra-ên đưa tay mặt ra, để trên đầu Ép-ra-im, là đứa nhỏ, còn tay trái lại để trên đầu Ma-na-se. Người có ý riêng để tay như vậy, vì Ma-na-se là đứa lớn.

15 ồi người chúc phước cho Giô-sép rằng: Cầu xin Ðức Chúa Trời mà tổ phụ tôi là Áp-ra-ham và Y-sác đã thờ phượng; là Ðức Chúa Trời đã chăn nuôi tôi từ khi mới lọt lòng cho đến ngày nay,

16 thiên sứ đã cứu tôi ra ngoài vòng hoạn nạn, hãy ban phước cho hai đứa trẻ nầy; nối danh tôi và tổ phụ tôi là Áp-ra-ham và Y-sác, và cho chúng nó thêm lên nhiều vô số trên mặt đất!

17 Nhưng Giô-sép thấy cha mình để tay hữu trên đầu Ép-ra-im, thì có ý bất bình, liền nắm lấy tay cha đã để lên đầu Ép-ra-im mà tráo đổi qua đấu Ma-na-se,

18 rồi thưa rằng: Chẳng phải vậy, cha. Ðứa nầy đầu lòng, để tay hữu cha trên đầu nó mới phải chớ.

19 Nhưng cha người không chịu và cãi rằng: Cha biết, con, cha biết. Nó sẽ trở nên một dân; nó cũng sẽ lớn vậy, con; song thể nào em nó cũng sẽ lớn hơn và dòng dõi nó sẽ thành ra vô số nước.

20 Trong ngày đó, người chúc phước cho hai đứa con trai nầy mà nói rằng: Ấy vì ngươi mà dân Y-sơ-ra-ên sẽ chúc phước nhau rằng: Cầu xin Ðức Chúa Trời làm cho ngươi được giống như Ép-ra-im và Ma-na-se. Vậy, Gia-cốp đặt Ép-ra-im trước Ma-na-se.

21 Y-sơ-ra-ên lại nói cùng Giô-sép rằng: Nầy, cha sẽ thác, nhưng Ðức Chúa Trời sẽ phù hộ và đem các con trở về xứ tổ phụ.

22 Còn cha sẽ cho con một phần đất trổi hơn các anh em, là phần đất của cha đã dùng cung-kiếm đoạt lấy của dân A-mô-rít đó.

6419. 'Daughters, [each one] marches onto the wall' means going out to fight against falsity. This is clear from the meaning of 'a daughter' as the Church, dealt with in 2362, 3963, here the spiritual Church since that Church is the subject; and from the meaning of 'marching onto the wall' as going out to fight against falsity, as is evident from the words that immediately follow - 'they exasperate him and shoot at him and hate him, do the archers; and he will sit in the strength of his bow', meaning the fight put up by falsity against truth.

[2] The expression 'marches onto the wall' is used because the subject in the internal sense is the attack made by falsities on truth and the protection of truth against falsity; for the spiritual Church represented by 'Joseph' is constantly under attack, but the Lord is constantly protecting it. This explains why in the Word all that makes up that Church is compared to a city with a wall, rampart, gates, and bars; and attacks made on the city describe attacks made on truth by falsities. Hence it also is that 'a city' means matters of doctrine, 402, 2268, 2449, 2712, 2943, 3216, 4492, 4493, and 'a wall' the truths of faith that serve to defend, or in the contrary sense falsities that serve to destroy. The first meaning - the truths of faith that serve to defend - may be seen in Isaiah,

Ours is a strong city; He will establish salvation for walls and rampart. Open the gates, so that the righteous nation that keeps faith may enter in. Isaiah 26:1-2.

In the same prophet,

You will call your walls Salvation, and your gates Praise. Isaiah 60:18.

In the same prophet,

Behold, I have engraved you upon [My] hands, your walls are continually before Me. Isaiah 49:16

'Walls' stands for the truths of faith. In the same prophet,

Upon your walls, O Jerusalem, I have placed watchmen, all day and night they will not be silent, calling Jehovah to mind. Isaiah 62:6.

Here the meaning is similar. In Jeremiah,

Thus said Jehovah, the God of Israel, 1 I will convert the weapons of war with which you are fighting with the king of Babel, besieging you outside the wall; I Myself will fight with you with an outstretched hand. Jeremiah 21:4-5.

In the same prophet,

Jehovah thought to destroy the wall of the daughter of Zion, He caused rampart and wall to mourn; they will languish together. Her gates have sunk into the earth, He has destroyed and broken in pieces her bars. Lamentations 2:8-9.

In Ezekiel,

The sons of Arvad, and your army, were on your walls round about, and the Gammadim were in your towers; they hung their shields on your walls round about and they made perfect your beauty. Ezekiel 27:11.

This refers to Tyre, which means cognitions of good and truth.

[3] The fact that such things are meant by a city and its walls becomes perfectly clear from the description of the holy Jerusalem coming down out of heaven, as seen by John. From every detail of the description it is evident that a new Church is meant by that city; and by its wall is meant Divine Truth going forth from the Lord. The city is depicted in John as follows,

The holy Jerusalem coming down from heaven, having a wall great and high, having twelve gates - the wall of the city had twelve foundations, and in them the names of the twelve apostles of the Lamb. He who talked to me measured the city and its gates, and its wall. Its wall was a hundred and forty-four cubits, which is the measure of a man, that is, of an angel. The structure of the wall was jasper, and the city pure gold, like pure glass. The foundations of the wall of the city were adorned with every precious stone. Revelation 21:10, 12, 14, 15, 17-19.

[4] The fact that 'the wall' means Divine Truth going forth from the Lord, and from this means the truth of faith coming out of the good of charity, is evident from the details regarding the wall that are mentioned in that description, such as the detail that the wall had twelve foundations, and in them were the names of the twelve apostles of the Lamb; for 'twelve means all, 3272, 3858, 3913, and 'the wall and its foundations' the truths of faith - much the same as is meant by 'the twelve apostles', 3488, 3858 (end), 6397. Then there is the detail that the wall was a hundred and forty-four cubits high, much the same being meant by that number as by twelve, which is all, since it is the product of twelve multiplied by twelve. And since that number used in reference to the wall means all truths and goods of faith, the expression 'which is the measure of a man, that is, of an angel' is added. Other details that are given are that the structure of the wall was jasper, and that its foundations were adorned with every precious stone; for 'jasper' and 'precious stones' mean the truths of faith, 114.

[5] The meaning of 'wall' in the contrary sense - falsities that serve to destroy - is evident from the following places: In Isaiah,

A day of tumult in the valley of vision. The Lord Jehovih Zebaoth has destroyed the wall, so that there is a shout towards the mountain. For Elam bore the quiver with chariots of men (homo), [and] horsemen. The horsemen surely positioned themselves right at the gate. Isaiah 22:5-7.

In the same prophet,

The defence-work of your walls providing refuge 2 He will pull down, cast down, lay flat on the ground, 3 right down into the dust. Isaiah 25:12.

In Jeremiah,

Go up onto its walls and throw down. Jeremiah 5:10.

In the same prophet,

I will kindle a fire in the wall of Damascus, which will consume the palaces of Benhadad. Jeremiah 49:27.

In the same prophet,

Raise a standard against the walls of Babel, keep watch, post watchmen. Jeremiah 51:12.

In Ezekiel,

They will overturn the walls of Tyre, and destroy her towers, and I will scrape her dust from her and make her a bare rock. Ezekiel 16:4, 8-9, 11.

402. 'A city that was built' means all doctrinal or heretical teaching founded on that heresy. This is clear from the Word wherever the name of any city occurs. In the Word 'city' never means a city but something doctrinal or else something heretical. For angels are totally ignorant of what a city is or what the name of any city is. They never do nor can have any city in mind, for their ideas are of spiritual and celestial things, as shown already. Their perception is solely of what is meant spiritually by cities, and the names of them. For example, by the Holy City, which is also called the Holy Jerusalem, they understand nothing other than the Lord's kingdom in general, or as it exists with each individual who has the Lord's kingdom within him. And the city of Zion or Mount Zion they understand in a similar way, the latter being the celestial degree of faith, the former the spiritual.

[2] And the celestial and spiritual itself is also described by cities, palaces, houses, walls, the foundations of walls, ramparts, gates, bars, and by the temple at the centre, as in Ezekiel 48, and in Revelation 21:15-end. In Revelation 21:2, 10, it is called 'the Holy Jerusalem'; in Jeremiah 31:38 ['the city for Jehovah']; in David, Psalms 46:4, 'the city of God, the holy place of the dwellings of the Most High'; and in Ezekiel 48:35, it is called 'the city, Jehovah is there'. And in Isaiah,

The sons of the foreigner will build up your walls. They will bend down to the soles of your feet, all who disapprove of you, and they will call you the City of Jehovah, the Zion of the Holy One of Israel. Isaiah 60:10, 14.

In Zechariah,

Jerusalem [will be called] the city of truth, and Mount Zion the mountain of holiness. Zechariah 8:3

Here 'city of truth', which is Jerusalem, means the spiritual things of faith, and 'the holy mountain', which is Zion, the celestial things of faith. And whereas the celestial and spiritual things of faith were represented by a city, so all matters of doctrine were meant by the cities of Judah and Israel, each one, when mentioned by name, meaning some specific point of doctrine, though exactly which nobody can know except from the internal sense.

[3] As cities meant matters of doctrine, cities also meant heretical ideas, each one when mentioned by name meaning some specific heretical idea. But at this point solely the consideration that in general a city means doctrinal teaching or else heretical may be established from the following places:

[4] In Isaiah,

On that day there will be five cities in the land of Egypt which speak in the lip of Canaan and swear to Jehovah Zebaoth. One of these will be called the city Heres. Isaiah 19:18.

This refers to man's knowledge of spiritual and celestial things at the time of the Lord's Coming. In the same prophet,

Full of tumults, a tumultuous city, an exultant city. Isaiah 22:1, 2.

This refers to 'the valley of vision', which is delusion. In Jeremiah,

The cities of the south are shut up, with none opening them. Jeremiah 13:10.

This refers to people who are in 'the south', that is, who dwell in the light of truth, but blot it out. In the same prophet,

Jehovah thought to destroy the wall of the daughter of Zion. He causes rampart and wall to mourn; they have languished together. Her gates have sunk into the ground, He has destroyed and broken in pieces her bars. Lamentations 2:8-9.

Here anyone may see that nothing else is meant by 'wall, rampart, gates and bars' than matters of doctrine.

[5] Similarly in Isaiah,

This song will be sung in the land of Judah, Ours is a strong city, salvation will establish walls and a rampart. Open the gates that the righteous nation that keeps faith may enter in. Isaiah 26:1-2.

In the same prophet,

I will exalt You, I will confess Your name. You have made the city into a heap, the fortified city into a ruin; let not a palace of aliens be built of the city for ever. Therefore a strong people will honour You, the city of terrifying nations will fear You. Isaiah 25:1-3.

Nor does this refer to any actual city. In Balaam's prophecy,

Edom will be an inheritance, and out of Jacob one will have dominion, and he will accomplish the destruction of the remnant of the city. Numbers 24:18-19.

Here anyone may see that 'the city' does not mean an actual city. In Isaiah,

The city of hollowness has been broken down, every house has been shut up so that none may enter in. There is an outcry in the streets over the wine. Isaiah 24:10-11.

Here 'city of hollowness' stands for hollowness of doctrine. In this and other places 'streets' means the things that constitute a city, namely falsities or truths. In John,

When the seventh angel poured out his bowl the great city was split into three parts and the cities of the nations fell. Revelation 16:17, 19.

That 'a great city' means something heretical, as do 'the cities of the nations', may be clear to anyone. The explanation is also given in Revelation 17:18 that the great city means the woman whom John saw, 'the woman', as shown already, being a Church of that nature.
