That this signifies that this evil must by no means be appropriated, but be cast out, is evident from the signification of “to be eaten,” as being to be appropriated and conjoined (see n. 2187, 2343, 3168, 3513, 3596, 3832, 4745, 5643, 8001); consequently “not to be eaten” denotes not to be appropriated, but to be cast out, for the reason that it is such evil as destroys the truth and the good of faith of the church; and from the signification of “flesh,” as being the good of celestial love, and in the opposite sense the evil of the love of self (n. 3813, 7850, 8409, 8431).
