¹ ครั้งนั้นพระวิญญาณทรงนำพระเยซูเข้าไปในถิ่นทุรกันดาร เพื่อพญามารจะได้มาทดลอง

² และเมื่อพระองค์ทรงอดพระกระยาหารสี่สิบวันสี่สิบคืนแล้ว ภายหลังพระองค์ก็ทรงอยากพระกระยาหาร

³ เมื่อผู้ทดลองมาหาพระองค์ มันก็ทูลว่า "ถ้าท่านเป็นพระบุตรของพระเจ้า จงสั่งก้อนหินเหล่านี้ให้กลายเป็นพระกระยาหาร"

⁴ ฝ่ายพระองค์ตรัสตอบว่า "มีพระคัมภีร์เขียนไว้ว่า `มนุษย์จะบำรุงชีวิตด้วยอาหารสิ่งเดียวหามิได้ แต่บำรุงด้วยพระวจนะทุกคำซึ่งออกมาจากพระโอษฐ์ของพระเจ้า'"

⁵ แล้วพญามารก็นำพระองค์ไปยังนครบริสุทธิ์ และให้พระองค์ประทับที่ยอดหลังคาพระวิหาร

⁶ แล้วทูลพระองค์ว่า "ถ้าท่านเป็นพระบุตรของพระเจ้า จงโจนลงไปเถิด เพราะพระคัมภีร์มีเขียนไว้ว่า `พระองค์จะรับสั่งให้เหล่าทูตสวรรค์ของพระองค์รักษาท่าน และเหล่าทูตสวรรค์จะเอามือประคองชูท่านไว้ เกรงว่าในเวลาหนึ่งเวลาใดเท้าของท่านจะกระแทกหิน'"

⁷ พระเยซูจึงตรัสตอบมันว่า "พระคัมภีร์มีเขียนไว้อีกว่า `อย่าทดลององค์พระผู้เป็นเจ้าผู้เป็นพระเจ้าของท่าน'"

⁸ อีกครั้งหนึ่งพญามารได้นำพระองค์ขึ้นไปบนภูเขาอันสูงยิ่งนัก และได้แสดงบรรดาราชอาณาจักรในโลก ทั้งความรุ่งเรืองของราชอาณาจักรเหล่านั้นให้พระองค์ทอดพระเนตร

⁹ แล้วได้ทูลพระองค์ว่า "ถ้าท่านจะกราบลงนมัสการเรา เราจะให้สิ่งทั้งปวงเหล่านี้แก่ท่าน"

¹⁰ พระเยซูจึงตรัสตอบมันว่า "อ้ายซาตาน จงไปเสียให้พ้น เพราะพระคัมภีร์มีเขียนไว้ว่า `จงนมัสการองค์พระผู้เป็นเจ้าผู้เป็นพระเจ้าของท่าน และปรนนิบัติพระองค์แต่ผู้เดียว'"

¹¹ แล้วพญามารจึงละพระองค์ไป และดูเถิด มีเหล่าทูตสวรรค์มาปรนนิบัติพระองค์

¹² ครั้นพระเยซูทรงได้ยินว่ายอห์นถูกจำไว้แล้ว พระองค์ก็เสด็จไปยังแคว้นกาลิลี

¹³ แล้วย้ายที่ประทับจากเมืองนาซาเร็ธ พระองค์เสด็จไปอยู่ที่เมืองคาเปอรนาอุม ซึ่งอยู่ริมทะเลสาบที่เขตคนเศบูลลุนและนัฟทาลี

¹⁴ เพื่อจะสำเร็จตามพระวจนะซึ่งตรัสไว้โดยอิสยาห์ศาสดาพยากรณ์ว่า

¹⁵ `แคว้นเศบูลลุนและแคว้นนัฟทาลีทางข้างทะเลฟากแม่น้ำจอร์แดนข้างโน้น คือกาลิลีแห่งบรรดาประชาชาติ

¹⁶ ประชาชนผู้นั่งอยู่ในความมืดได้เห็นความสว่างยิ่งใหญ่ และผู้ที่นั่งอยู่ในแดนและเงาแห่งความตาย ก็มีความสว่างขึ้นส่องถึงเขาแล้ว'

¹⁷ ตั้งแต่นั้นมาพระเยซูได้ทรงตั้งต้นประกาศว่า "จงกลับใจเสียใหม่ เพราะว่าอาณาจักรแห่งสวรรค์มาใกล้แล้ว"

¹⁸ ขณะที่พระเยซูทรงดำเนินอยู่ตามชายทะเลกาลิลี ก็ทอดพระเนตรเห็นพี่น้องสองคน คือซีโมนที่เรียกว่าเปโตร กับอันดรูว์น้องชาย กำลังทอดอวนอยู่ที่ทะเลสาบ เพราะเขาเป็นชาวประมง

¹⁹ พระองค์ตรัสกับเขาว่า "จงตามเรามาเถิด และเราจะตั้งท่านให้เป็นผู้หาคนดั่งหาปลา"

²⁰ เขาทั้งสองได้ละอวนตามพระองค์ไปทันที

²¹ ครั้นพระองค์เสด็จต่อไป ก็ทอดพระเนตรเห็นพี่น้องอีกสองคน คือยากอบบุตรชายเศเบดีกับยอห์นน้องชายของเขา กำลังชุนอวนอยู่ในเรือกับเศเบดีบิดาของเขา พระองค์ได้ทรงเรียกเขา

²² ในทันใดนั้นเขาทั้งสองก็ละเรือและลาบิดาของเขาตามพระองค์ไป

²³ พระเยซูได้เสด็จไปทั่วแคว้นกาลิลี ทรงสั่งสอนในธรรมศาลาของเขา ทรงประกาศข่าวประเสริฐแห่งอาณาจักร และทรงรักษาโรคภัยไข้เจ็บทุกอย่างของชาวเมืองให้หาย

²⁴ กิตติศัพท์ของพระองค์ก็เลื่องลือไปทั่วประเทศซีเรีย เขาจึงพาบรรดาคนป่วยเป็นโรคต่างๆ คนที่ทนทุกข์เวทนา คนผีเข้า คนเป็นลมบ้าหมู และคนเป็นอัมพาตมาหาพระองค์ พระองค์ก็ทรงรักษาเขาให้หาย

²⁵ และมีคนหมู่ใหญ่มาจากแคว้นกาลิลี และแคว้นทศบุรี และกรุงเยรูซาเล็ม และแคว้นยูเดีย และแม่น้ำจอร์แดนฟากข้างโน้น ติดตามพระองค์ไป

¹ Give thanks to Yahweh, for he is good, for his loving kindness endures forever.

² Let the redeemed by Yahweh say so, whom he has redeemed from the hand of the adversary,

³ And gathered out of the lands, from the east and from the west, from the north and from the south.

⁴ They wandered in the wilderness in a desert way. They found no city to live in.

⁵ Hungry and thirsty, their soul fainted in them.

⁶ Then they cried to Yahweh in their trouble, and he delivered them out of their distresses,

⁷ he led them also by a straight way, that they might go to a city to live in.

⁸ Let them praise Yahweh for his loving kindness, for his wonderful works to the children of men!

⁹ For he satisfies the longing soul. He fills the hungry soul with good.

¹⁰ Some sat in darkness and in the shadow of death, being bound in affliction and iron,

¹¹ because they rebelled against the words of God, and condemned the counsel of the Most High.

¹² Therefore he brought down their heart with labor. They fell down, and there was none to help.

¹³ Then they cried to Yahweh in their trouble, and he saved them out of their distresses.

¹⁴ He brought them out of darkness and the shadow of death, and broke their bonds in sunder.

¹⁵ Let them praise Yahweh for his loving kindness, for his wonderful works to the children of men!

¹⁶ For he has broken the gates of brass, and cut through bars of iron.

¹⁷ Fools are afflicted because of their disobedience, and because of their iniquities.

¹⁸ Their soul abhors all kinds of food. They draw near to the gates of death.

¹⁹ Then they cry to Yahweh in their trouble, he saves them out of their distresses.

²⁰ He sends his word, and heals them, and delivers them from their graves.

²¹ Let them praise Yahweh for his loving kindness, for his wonderful works to the children of men!

²² Let them offer the sacrifices of thanksgiving, and declare his works with singing.

²³ Those who go down to the sea in ships, who do business in great waters;

²⁴ These see Yahweh's works, and his wonders in the deep.

²⁵ For he commands, and raises the stormy wind, which lifts up its waves.

²⁶ They mount up to the sky; they go down again to the depths. Their soul melts away because of trouble.

²⁷ They reel back and forth, and stagger like a drunken man, and are at their wits' end.

²⁸ Then they cry to Yahweh in their trouble, and he brings them out of their distress.

²⁹ He makes the storm a calm, so that its waves are still.

³⁰ Then they are glad because it is calm, so he brings them to their desired haven.

³¹ Let them praise Yahweh for his loving kindness, for his wonderful works for the children of men!

³² Let them exalt him also in the assembly of the people, and praise him in the seat of the elders.

³³ He turns rivers into a desert, water springs into a thirsty ground,

³⁴ and a fruitful land into a salt waste, for the wickedness of those who dwell in it.

³⁵ He turns a desert into a pool of water, and a dry land into water springs.

³⁶ There he makes the hungry live, that they may prepare a city to live in,

³⁷ sow fields, plant vineyards, and reap the fruits of increase.

³⁸ He blesses them also, so that they are multiplied greatly. He doesn't allow their livestock to decrease.

³⁹ Again, they are diminished and bowed down through oppression, trouble, and sorrow.

⁴⁰ He pours contempt on princes, and causes them to wander in a trackless waste.

⁴¹ Yet he lifts the needy out of their affliction, and increases their families like a flock.

⁴² The upright will see it, and be glad. All the wicked will shut their mouths.

⁴³ Whoever is wise will pay attention to these things. They will consider the loving kindnesses of Yahweh. A Song. A Psalm by David.
