¹ "มาเถิด ให้เรากลับไปหาพระเยโฮวาห์ เพราะว่าพระองค์ทรงฉีก และจะทรงรักษาเราให้หาย พระองค์ทรงโบยตี และจะทรงพันบาดแผลให้แก่เรา

² อีกสองวันพระองค์จะทรงฟื้นฟูเราขึ้นใหม่ พอถึงวันที่สามจะทรงยกเราขึ้น เพื่อเราจะดำรงชีวิตอยู่ในสายพระเนตรของพระองค์

³ แล้วเราก็จะรู้ถ้าเราพยายามรู้จักพระเยโฮวาห์ การที่พระองค์เสด็จออกก็เตรียมไว้ดุจยามเช้า พระองค์จะเสด็จมาหาเราอย่างห่าฝน ดังฝนชุกปลายฤดูกับต้นฤดูที่รดพื้นแผ่นดิน"

⁴ โอ เอฟราอิมเอ๋ย เราจะทำอะไรกับเจ้าดี โอ ยูดาห์เอ๋ย เราจะทำอะไรกับเจ้าหนอ ความดีของเจ้าเหมือนเมฆในยามเช้า เหมือนอย่างน้ำค้างที่หายไปแต่เช้าตรู่

⁵ ฉะนี้ เราจึงให้ผู้พยากรณ์แกะสลักเขา เราประหารเขาเสียด้วยคำพูดจากปากของเรา การพิพากษาต่อเจ้าก็ออกไปอย่างแสงสว่าง

⁶ เพราะเราประสงค์ความเมตตาไม่ประสงค์เครื่องสัตวบูชา เราประสงค์ความรู้ในพระเจ้ายิ่งกว่าเครื่องเผาบูชา

⁷ แต่พวกเขาดังมนุษย์ได้ละเมิดพันธสัญญา ที่นั่นเขาทรยศต่อเรา

⁸ กิเลอาดเป็นเมืองของคนกระทำความชั่วช้า และเปรอะเปื้อนไปด้วยโลหิต

⁹ อย่างเหล่าโจรซุ่มคอยดักคนฉันใด พวกปุโรหิตก็ซุ่มคอยฉันนั้น เขายินยอมกระทำฆาตกรรมตามทาง เขาทำการลามก

¹⁰ เราเห็นสิ่งน่าสยดสยองในวงศ์วานอิสราเอล การเล่นชู้ของเอฟราอิมก็อยู่ที่นั่น อิสราเอลเป็นมลทิน

¹¹ โอ ยูดาห์เอ๋ย เจ้าก็เหมือนกันด้วยฤดูเกี่ยวก็กำหนดไว้ให้เจ้าแล้ว เมื่อเราจะให้ประชาชนของเรากลับสู่สภาพเดิมจากการเป็นเชลย

⁵ เรานี่แหละที่คุ้นเคยกับเจ้าที่ในถิ่นทุรกันดาร ในแผ่นดินที่กันดารน้ำ

² "Speak to the children of Israel, and take of them rods, one for each fathers' house, of all their princes according to their fathers' houses, twelve rods: write every man's name on his rod.

³ You shall write Aaron's name on the rod of Levi; for there shall be one rod for each head of their fathers' houses.

⁴ You shall lay them up in the Tent of Meeting before the testimony, where I meet with you.

⁵ It shall happen, that the rod of the man whom I shall choose shall bud: and I will make to cease from me the murmurings of the children of Israel, which they murmur against you."

⁶ Moses spoke to the children of Israel; and all their princes gave him rods, for each prince one, according to their fathers' houses, even twelve rods: and the rod of Aaron was among their rods.

⁷ Moses laid up the rods before Yahweh in the tent of the testimony.

⁸ It happened on the next day, that Moses went into the tent of the testimony; and behold, the rod of Aaron for the house of Levi was budded, and put forth buds, and produced blossoms, and bore ripe almonds.

⁹ Moses brought out all the rods from before Yahweh to all the children of Israel: and they looked, and took every man his rod.

¹⁰ Yahweh said to Moses, "Put back the rod of Aaron before the testimony, to be kept for a token against the children of rebellion; that you may make an end of their murmurings against me, that they not die."
