4873. '[And he said'] What is the pledge that I am to give you?' means that which made it certain. This is clear from the meaning of 'the pledge' as that which served to make it a certainty, dealt with immediately above in 4872. This meaning - that which made it certain - is also evident from what follows next regarding the pledge that was given.
