Herren är själv kärlek, uttryckt i form av visdom i sig. Kärlek är alltså Hans väsen, Hans inre. Vishet - den kärleksfulla förståelsen för hur man kan omsätta kärlek till handling - är lite mer extern, vilket ger kärlek ett sätt att uttrycka sig.

När Bibeln talar om "Jehova" representerar den den inre kärleken som är Herrens väsen. Den kärleken är en, hel och fullständig i sig, och Jehova är också en, ett namn som endast tillämpas på Herren. Visdom uttrycks emellertid i en mängd olika tankar och idéer, vad skrifterna gemensamt kallar gudomlig sanning. Det finns också många imaginära gudar, och ibland kan änglar och människor kallas gudar (Herren sa att Moses skulle vara som en gud för Aron). Så när Bibeln kallar Herren "Gud" hänvisar det i de flesta fall till gudomlig sanning.

I andra fall har "Gud" hänvisning till det som kallas den gudomliga människan. Fallet där är detta:

Som människor kan vi inte engagera Herren direkt som gudomlig kärlek. Det är för kraftfullt och för rent. Istället måste vi närma oss Honom genom att förstå Honom genom gudomlig sanning. Den gudomliga sanningen är alltså Herren i mänsklig form, en form vi kan närma oss och förstå. Således används "Gud" också med hänvisning till denna mänskliga aspekt, eftersom det är ett uttryck för sanning.

391. The fact that people under the influence of falsity and evil are afraid of everybody else can be recognized best of all from evil spirits in the next life. Those who have divested themselves of all charity are wanderers and fugitives. If, wherever they go, they come to any communities, the people there perceive their character the moment they are approaching. The perceptivity existing in the next life is such that these communities not only drive those intruders away, but also punish them severely. Indeed their intention is to kill them if possible. So very great is the pleasure which the evil find in punishing and torturing one another that their greatest delight consists in doing so. And what is an arcanum still, the cause lies in falsity and evil themselves, for what anyone wishes upon another recoils upon himself. In fact falsity and evil carry within themselves the punishment of falsity and evil, and consequently the fear of punishment.
