1 Y SIENDO Abram de edad de noventa y nueve años, aparecióle Jehová, y le dijo: Yo soy el Dios Todopoderoso; anda delante de mí, y sé perfecto.

2 Y pondré mi pacto entre mí y ti, y multiplicarte he mucho en gran manera.

3 Entonces Abram cayó sobre su rostro, y Dios habló con él diciendo:

4 Yo, he aquí mi pacto contigo: Serás padre de muchedumbre de gentes:

5 Y no se llamará más tu nombre Abram, sino que será tu nombre Abraham, porque te he puesto por padre de muchedumbre de gentes.

6 Y multiplicarte he mucho en gran manera, y te pondré en gentes, y reyes saldrán de ti.

7 Y estableceré mi pacto entre mí y ti, y tu simiente después de ti en sus generaciones, por alianza perpetua, para serte á ti por Dios, y á tu simiente después de ti.

8 Y te daré á ti, y á tu simiente después de ti, la tierra de tus peregrinaciones, toda la tierra de Canaán en heredad perpetua; y seré el Dios de ellos.

9 Dijo de nuevo Dios á Abraham: Tú empero guardarás mi pacto, tú y tu simiente después de ti por sus generaciones.

10 Este será mi pacto, que guardaréis entre mí y vosotros y tu simiente después de ti: Será circuncidado todo varón de entre vosotros.

11 Circuncidaréis, pues, la carne de vuestro prepucio, y será por señal del pacto entre mí y vosotros.

12 Y de edad de ocho días será circuncidado todo varón entre vosotros por vuestras generaciones: el nacido en casa, y el comprado á dinero de cualquier extranjero, que no fuere de tu simiente.

13 Debe ser circuncidado el nacido en tu casa, y el comprado por tu dinero: y estará mi pacto en vuestra carne para alianza perpetua.

14 Y el varón incircunciso que no hubiere circuncidado la carne de su prepucio, aquella persona será borrada de su pueblo; ha violado mi pacto.

15 Dijo también Dios á Abraham: A Sarai tu mujer no la llamarás Sarai, mas Sara será su nombre.

16 Y bendecirla he, y también te daré de ella hijo; sí, la bendeciré, y vendrá á ser madre de naciones; reyes de pueblos serán de ella.

17 Entonces Abraham cayó sobre su rostro, y rióse, y dijo en su corazón: ¿A hombre de cien años ha de nacer hijo? ¿y Sara, ya de noventa años, ha de parir?

18 Y dijo Abraham á Dios: Ojalá Ismael viva delante de ti.

19 Y respondió Dios: Ciertamente Sara tu mujer te parirá un hijo, y llamarás su nombre Isaac; y confirmaré mi pacto con él por alianza perpetua para su simiente después de él.

20 Y en cuanto á Ismael, también te he oído: he aquí que le bendeciré, y le haré fructificar y multiplicar mucho en gran manera: doce príncipes engendrará, y ponerlo he por gran gente.

21 Mas yo estableceré mi pacto con Isaac, al cual te parirá Sara por este tiempo el año siguiente.

22 Y acabó de hablar con él, y subió Dios de con Abraham.

23 Entonces tomó Abraham á Ismael su hijo, y á todos los siervos nacidos en su casa, y á todos los comprados por su dinero, á todo varón entre los domésticos de la casa de Abraham, y circuncidó la carne del prepucio de ellos en aquel mismo día, como Dios le

24 Era Abraham de edad de noventa y nueve años cuando circuncidó la carne de su prepucio.

25 E Ismael su hijo era de trece años cuando fué circuncidada la carne de su prepucio.

26 En el mismo día fué circuncidado Abraham é Ismael su hijo.

27 Y todos los varones de su casa, el siervo nacido en casa, y el comprado por dinero del extranjero, fueron circuncidados con él.

2116. That 'were circumcised by him' means that they were made righteous by the Lord becomes clear from the representation and consequently from the meaning of 'being circumcised' as being purified, dealt with above in 2039. 'Being circumcised by him' - that is, by Abraham - was also a representative act, that is to say, an act of being purified and so of being made righteous by the Lord. As regards righteousness however, the position is not as people commonly suppose. They imagine that all evils and sins are washed away and completely abolished when people become believers, even if they become such only in their last hour before they die, no matter whether they have committed evil and disgraceful actions throughout the whole course of their lives. I have been fully informed however that not even the smallest evil a person has thought and carried out during his lifetime is washed away and completely abolished, but that everything remains right down to the smallest detail.

[2] The truth of the matter is that in the case of people who have thought and practiced acts of hatred, revenge, cruelty, and adultery, and so have not led charitable lives, the life they have acquired in so doing awaits them after death. Indeed every single facet of that life awaits them and gradually reappears. This for them is the source of torment in hell. But in the case of people who have led lives of love to the Lord and of charity towards the neighbour all their evils of life await them also; but these are moderated by the goods which they have received from the Lord through the life of charity during their lifetime, and in this condition they are raised up into heaven. Indeed they are withheld from the evils which they have with them so that these do not show themselves. People in the next life who doubt that they have evils with them because they do not show themselves are brought back into those evils until they know that it really is so. After that they are raised once more into heaven.

[3] This then is what being made righteous entails, for in this way people come to acknowledge not their own righteousness but the Lord's. When people say that those are saved who have faith, they are saying something that is true; but in the Word nothing else is meant by faith than love to the Lord and charity towards the neighbour, and so a life that is derived from those loves. Matters of doctrine and established beliefs do not constitute faith yet are part of faith, for these, each and every one, exist to the end that a person may become such as they teach. This becomes quite clear from the Lord's words about all the Law and all the Prophets, that is, the doctrine of faith in its entirety., consisting in love to God and love towards the neighbour, Matthew 22:35-40; Mark 12:28-35. The fact that no other kind of faith which is truly faith can possibly, exist has been shown in Volume One, in 30-38, 379, 389, 724, 809, 896, 904, 916, 989, 1017, 1076, 1077, 1121, 1158, 1162, 1176, 1258, 1285, 1316, 1608, 1798, 1799, 1834, 1843, 1844, and that heaven itself consists in love to the Lord and in mutual love, in 537, 547, 553, 1112, 2057.

1843. That 'your seed will be strangers' means that charity and faith will be scarce is clear from the meaning of 'strange' and from the meaning of 'seed'. 'Strange' means not born in the land, thus not recognized as a native of it, and therefore looked upon as foreign. But 'seed' means charity and its attendant faith, as shown already in 255, 1025, and above at verse 3. Since that which is looked upon as foreign is called 'strange' and foreign describes what is not within the land or of the land, that which is scarce is consequently meant. The meaning here therefore is that charity and its attendant faith, meant by 'seed', will be scarce. It is the time just before the close - when there is 'great darkness', or falsities - that is the subject; at this time the seed will be 'strangers', that is, charity and faith, will be scarce.

[2] The fact that faith would be scarce in the last times was foretold by the Lord when He described the close of the age, in Matthew 24:4-end; Mark 13:3-end; Luke 21:7-end. Everything that is stated in these places implies that in those times charity and faith will be scarce, and that at length there will not be any at all. Something similar was foretold through John in the Book of Revelation, and also occurs many times in the Prophets, besides what appears in the historical sections of the Word.

[3] But by the faith that is going to perish in the last times nothing other than charity is meant. No other faith can possibly exist, except faith that is grounded in charity. The person who has no charity is incapable of possessing any faith at all, charity being the soil in which faith is implanted, its heart from which it derives its being and life. The ancients for this reason compared love and charity to the heart, and faith to the lungs, both of which lie inside the breast. That comparison is also a perfect simile; for to imagine a life of faith without charity is like imagining life from the lungs alone without the heart, which is an impossibility, as may become clear to anyone. The ancients therefore used to call all things that belonged to charity those of the heart, and all that belonged to faith devoid of charity those of the lips alone, that is, of the lungs passing by means of breath into speech. From this came the sayings of old about the need for goods and truths to go forth from the heart.
