1 В тот день воспела Девора и Варак, сын Авиноамов, сими словами:

2 Израиль отмщен, народ показал рвение; прославьте Господа!

3 Слушайте, цари, внимайте, вельможи: я Господу, я пою, бряцаю Господу Богу Израилеву.

4 Когда выходил Ты, Господи, от Сеира, когда шел с поля Едомского,тогда земля тряслась, и небо капало, и облака проливали воду;

5 горы таяли от лица Господа, даже этот Синай от лица Господа Бога Израилева.

6 Во дни Самегара, сына Анафова, во дни Иаили, были пусты дороги, и ходившие прежде путями прямыми ходили тогда окольнымидорогами.

7 Не стало обитателей в селениях уИзраиля, не стало, доколе не восстала я, Девора, доколене восстала я, мать в Израиле.

10 Ездящие на ослицах белых, сидящие на коврах и ходящие по дороге, пойте песнь!

11 Среди голосов собирающих стада при колодезях, там да воспоют хвалу Господу, хвалу вождям Израиля! Тогда выступил ко вратам народ Господень.

12 Воспряни, воспряни, Девора! воспряни, воспряни! воспой песнь! Восстань, Варак! и веди пленников твоих, сын Авиноамов!

13 Тогда немногим из сильных подчинил Он народ; Господь подчинил мнехрабрых.

14 От Ефрема пришли укоренившиеся в земле Амалика; за тобою Вениамин, среди народа твоего; от Махира шли начальники, и от Завулона владеющие тростью писца.

15 И князья Иссахаровы с Деворою, и Иссахар так же, как Варак, бросился в долину пеший. В племенах Рувимовых большое разногласие.

18 Завулон – народ, обрекший душу свою на смерть, и Неффалим – навысотах поля.

19 Пришли цари, сразились, тогда сразились цари Ханаанские в Фанаахе у вод Мегиддонских, но не получили нимало серебра.

20 С неба сражались, звезды с путей своих сражались с Сисарою.

21 Поток Киссон увлек их, Поток Кедумим, Поток Киссон. Попирай, душа моя, силу!

22 Тогда ломались копыта конские от побега, от побега сильных его.

23 Прокляните Мероз, говорит Ангел Господень, прокляните, прокляните жителей его за то, что не пришли на помощь Господу, на помощь Господу с храбрыми.

24 Да будет благословенна между женами Иаиль, жена Хевера Кенеянина, между женами в шатрах да будет благословенна!

29 Умные из ее женщин отвечают ей, и сама она отвечает на слова свои:

30 верно, они нашли, делят добычу, по девице, по две девицы на каждого воина, в добычу полученная разноцветная одежда Сисаре, полученная в добычуразноцветная одежда, вышитая с обеих сторон, снятая с плеч пленника.

31 Так да погибнут все враги Твои, Господи! Любящие же Его да будут как солнце, восходящее во всей силе своей! – И покоилась земля сорок лет.

Exploring the Meaning of Judges 5

Judges 5: The Song of Deborah.

This chapter is a song of victory, describing the events of Judges 4 in poetic and exuberant language. Throughout, there is a sense of exhorting the people to turn to the Lord and praise Him for the victory. Singing this kind of song was a customary way for Israel to rejoice after a major victory.

The spiritual meaning of singing has to do with our overall joy and affection for spiritual things: joy for what is true, for the Word, and for everything about the Lord. Affection is not merely knowing spiritual truths; it is our heart’s response to them, which goes far beyond words.

This is why the lyrics of sacred songs such as Judges Chapter 5 are very eloquent and passionate. They are not simply an account of what took place, but more an outburst of praise and gratitude in recounting the story. We experience the same inner ‘music’ when our heart feels a deep spiritual affection, and is stirred up with praise to the Lord. Just as Deborah and Barak sang after a battle, our songs of gratitude will generally be felt after the Lord delivers us from a period of temptation during regeneration (see Swedenborg’s work, Arcana Caelestia 8265).

The song itself frequently acknowledges the Lord’s part in Israel’s victory:

In verse 4: “Lord, when you went out from Seir, when you marched from the field of Edom.”

In verse 11: “There they shall recount the righteous acts of the Lord for his villagers in Israel.”

And in verse 13: “Then the Lord came down for me against the mighty.”

These references serve to remind us that everything is the Lord’s doing. We must do what is good as though our actions make the difference, but we are to affirm that the Lord brings about all that is good. This acknowledgement allows us to act from free will, while still understanding the spiritual truth that all goodness comes from the Lord (Arcana Caelestia 9193).

This is emphasized through the song whenever Deborah praises her own actions, as well as those of Barak and Jael. For example:

In verse 7: “Village life ceased in Israel until I, Deborah, arose, a mother in Israel.”

In verse 12: “Awake, awake, Deborah! Awake, awake, sing a song! Arise, Barak, and lead your captives away, O son of Abinoam!”

And in verses 24-27, when Jael receives full praise for her actions.

Another theme in the song is a lament over those tribes which did not come to the aid of Israel, although only Issachar and Zebulun were called to battle. A town called Meroz is roundly cursed for failing to help. The name ‘Meroz’ comes from a verb meaning “to withdraw” or “to hide” (see Swedenborg’s work, Heaven and Hell 18). This lament reminds us that our intentions to serve the Lord and to fight our spiritual battles can be hindered by our own divided wills.

18. The reason the Lord's divine nature in heaven is love is that love is what is receptive of every heavenly quality - that is, of peace, intelligence, wisdom, and happiness. Love is receptive of everything that is in harmony with it. It longs for such things, it seeks them out, it absorbs them spontaneously because it has the constant purpose of uniting itself with them and being enriched by them. 1 People actually recognize this fact, since the love within them surveys memory, so to speak, and draws out from it the items that agree with it. It gathers these together and arranges them within and beneath itself - within itself so that it may possess them and beneath itself so that they may serve it. It discards and eradicates, though, the items that do not agree with it.

I have been able to see very clearly that love has a full, intrinsic ability to accept elements of truth that suit it and has also a desire of uniting them to itself. This has become clear from observing people who have been transported into heaven. Even people who were simple folk in this world have arrived at angelic wisdom and heavenly happiness in the company of angels. This was because they loved what is good and true for the sake of what is good and true. They had grafted these qualities into their lives and had thereby become capable of accepting heaven and all its indescribable riches.

People caught up in love for themselves and for the world, however, have no such receptive ability. They turn away from such things, discard them, and at their first touch or inflow try to escape them. They ally themselves with people in hell who are caught up in loves like their own.

There were some spirits who doubted that love was so full and wanted to know whether this was really true. In order that they might find out, they were let into a state of heavenly love with all obstacles removed and were brought forward a considerable distance to an angelic heaven. They talked with me from there and told me that they felt deeper happiness than words could express, sorrowing that they would have to return to their former state. Other people as well have been raised into heaven, and the deeper or higher they have been taken, the deeper and higher they have penetrated into intelligence and wisdom, becoming able to grasp things that were incomprehensible to them before. We can see from this that the love that

emanates from the Lord is open to heaven and all its riches.
