1 Из голубой же, пурпуровой и червленой шерсти сделали они служебные одежды, для служения во святилище; также сделали священные одежды Аарону, какповелел Господь Моисею.

2 И сделал ефод из золота, из голубой, пурпуровой и червленой шерсти и из крученого виссона;

3 и разбили они золото в листы и вытянули нити, чтобы воткать их между голубыми, пурпуровыми, червлеными и виссонными нитями , искусною работою.

4 И сделали у него нарамники связывающие; на обоих концах своих он был связан.

5 И пояс ефода, который поверх его, одинаковой с ним работы, сделан был из золота, из голубой, пурпуровой и червленой шерсти и крученого виссона, как повелел Господь Моисею.

6 И обделали камни ониксовые, вставив их в золотые гнезда и вырезав на них имена сынов Израилевых, как вырезывают на печати;

7 и положил он их на нарамники ефода, в память сынов Израилевых, как повелел Господь Моисею.

8 И сделал наперсник искусною работою, такою же работою, как ефод, иззолота, из голубой, пурпуровой и червленой шерсти и из крученого виссона;

9 он был четыреугольный; двойной сделали они наперсник в пядень длиною и в пядень шириною, двойной он был;

10 и вставили в него в четыре ряда камни. Рядом: рубин, топаз, изумруд, – это первый ряд;

11 во втором ряду: карбункул, сапфир и алмаз;

12 в третьем ряду: яхонт, агат и аметист;

13 в четвертом ряду: хризолит, оникс и яспис; и вставлены они в золотых гнездах.

14 Камней было по числу имен сынов Израилевых: двенадцать было их, по числу имен их, ина каждом из них вырезано было, как на печати, по одному имени, для двенадцати колен.

15 К наперснику сделали толстые цепочки витою работою из чистогозолота;

16 и сделали два золотых гнезда и два золотых кольца и прикрепили два кольца к двум концам наперсника;

17 и вдели обе плетеные цепочки из золота в два кольца по концам наперсника,

18 а два конца двух цепочек прикрепили к двум гнездам и прикрепили их к нарамникам ефода с лицевой стороны его;

19 еще сделали два кольца золотых и прикрепили к двум другим концам наперсника, на той стороне, которая находится к ефоду внутрь;

20 и еще сделали два кольца золотых и прикрепили их к двум нарамникам ефода снизу, с лицевой стороны его, у соединения егонад поясом ефода;

21 и прикрепили наперсник кольцами его к кольцам ефода посредством шнура из голубой шерсти , чтобы он был над поясом ефода, и чтобы не отставал наперсник от ефода, как повелел Господь Моисею.

22 И сделал верхнюю ризу к ефоду, тканую, всю из голубой шерсти ,

23 и среди верхней ризы отверстие, как отверстие у брони, и вокруг него обшивку, чтобы не дралось;

24 по подолу верхней ризы сделали они яблоки из голубой, пурпуровой и червленой шерсти ;

25 и сделали позвонки из чистого золота и повесили позвонки между яблоками по подолу верхней ризы кругом;

26 позвонок и яблоко, позвонок и яблоко, по подолу верхней ризы кругом для служения, как повелел Господь Моисею.

27 И сделали для Аарона и для сыновей его хитоны из виссона, тканые,

28 и кидар из виссона, и головные повязки из виссона, и нижнее льняное платье из крученого виссона,

29 и пояс из крученого виссона и из голубой, пурпуровой и червленой шерсти , узорчатой работы, как повелел Господь Моисею.

30 И сделали полированную дощечку, диадиму святыни, из чистого золота, и начертали на ней письмена, как вырезывают на печати: Святыня Господня;

31 и прикрепили к ней шнур из голубой шерсти , чтобы привязать ее к кидару сверху, как повелел Господь Моисею.

32 Так кончена была вся работа для скинии собрания; и сделали сыны Израилевы все: как повелел Господь Моисею, так исделали.

33 И принесли к Моисею скинию, покров и все принадлежности ее, крючки ее, брусья ее, шесты ее, столбы ее и подножия ее,

34 покров из кож бараньих красных и покров из кож синих и завесу закрывающую,

35 ковчег откровения и шесты его, и крышку,

36 стол со всеми принадлежностями его и хлебы предложения,

37 светильник из чистого золота, лампады его, лампады расставленные на нем и все принадлежности его, и елей для освещения,

38 золотой жертвенник и елей помазания, и благовония для курения, и завесу ко входу в скинию,

39 жертвенник медный и медную решетку к нему, шесты его и все принадлежности его, умывальник и подножие его,

40 завесы двора, столбы и подножия, завесу к воротам двора, веревки и колья и все вещи, принадлежащие к служению в скинии собрания,

41 одежды служебные для служения во святилище, священные одежды Аарону священнику и одежды сыновьям его для священнодействия.

42 Как повелел Господь Моисею, так и сделали сыны Израилевы все сииработы.

43 И увидел Моисей всю работу, и вот они сделали ее: как повелел Господь, так и сделали. И благословил их Моисей.

9688. 'The work of an embroiderer' means things that belong to factual knowledge. This is clear from the meaning of 'the work of an embroiderer', or embroidery, as factual knowledge. A large number of places in the Word speak of that which has been embroidered and of embroidery, and in every case factual knowledge is meant by it. The reason for this goes back to representatives in the next life; there garments embroidered in various ways are seen, and by these garments truths on the level of factual knowledge are meant.

[2] Truths on the level of factual knowledge differ from those on the level of the understanding in the same way as outward things differ from inward ones, or as the natural level with a person differs from the spiritual. Facts serve the understanding as objects from which it may deduce truths; for the power of understanding is the internal or spiritual man's power of sight, and known facts are its objects in the external or natural man. These facts are meant by 'the work of an embroiderer' whereas that power of understanding is meant by 'the work of a designer', 9598, for designing is a function of the understanding, and embroidering a function of the knowledge and skill employed by the understanding. This explains why the objects within the dwelling-place, which were signs meaning inner realities, were the work of a designer, such as the curtains that formed it, verse 1, and the veil between the holy place and the holy of holies, verse 31. But the objects which were signs meaning outer realities were the work of an embroiderer, such as the screen in place of a tent door, and the screen in place of a gate of the court, Exodus 38:18, and also the girdle, Exodus 39:29, 'the girdle' being what is external linking everything internal, 'the court' being the lowest part of heaven, and 'the tent door' the place where there is an exit from the middle heaven into the lowest.

[3] The fact that 'embroidery' and that which has been 'embroidered' mean factual knowledge belonging to the external or natural man is clear from the following places in the Word: In Ezekiel,

Fine linen with embroidery from Egypt was your sail; violet and purple from the islands of Elishah was your covering. Syria was your merchant by reason of the multitude of your handiworks; [they exchanged for your wares] chrysoprase and purple, and embroidered work, and fine linen. The merchants of Sheba [came] with balls of violet and with embroidered work. Ezekiel 27:7, 16, 24.

This refers to Tyre, by which those in possession of cognitions or knowledge of truth and good are meant, and in the abstract sense those cognitions themselves, 1201. 'Fine linen with embroidery' means truth on the level of factual knowledge, for 'fine linen' means truth from a celestial origin, 5319, 9469, and 'embroidery' is factual knowledge. This also is the reason why it says that it came from Egypt - for 'Egypt' means factual knowledge, 1164, 1165, 1186, 1462, 2588, 4749, 4964, 4966, 5700, 5702, 6004, 6015, 6125, 6651, 6679, 6683, 6692, 6750, 7779 (end), 9391 - and also from Syria and from Sheba, since cognitions of truth and good are meant by 'Syria', 1232, 1234, 3051, 3249, 3664, 3680, 4112, and in like manner by 'Sheba', 1171, 3240. Cognitions of truth and good constitute the Church's factual knowledge. Anybody endowed with the ability to think intelligently and weigh things up can see that in these verses from Ezekiel one should not understand embroidery, fine linen, violet, or purple, but that these commodities mean things such as are worthy of mention in the Word, namely spiritual realities that belong to heaven and the Church.

[4] In the same prophet,

All the princes of the sea will step down from upon their thrones, and will cast away their robes and will strip off their embroidered garments. They will clothe themselves with tremblings. Ezekiel 26:16.

This too refers to Tyre. 'The princes of the sea' are the first and foremost known facts, which are called dogmas, 'princes' meaning things which are first and foremost, see 1482, 2089, 5044, and 'the sea' factual knowledge in general 28, 2850. 'Robes' are external truths, 'embroidered' are truths on the level of factual knowledge, which too are external ones. For the meaning of 'garments' as truths, 2576, 4545, 4763, 5248, 5319, 5954, 6914, 6917, 6918, 9093, 9158, 9212, 9216.

[5] In the same prophet,

I clothed you with embroidered cloth, and shod you with badger; I swathed you in fine linen and covered you with silk. Thus were you adorned with gold and silver; and your garments were fine linen, silk, and embroidered cloth. But you took your embroidered garments and covered the images, with which you committed whoredom. 1 Ezekiel 16:10, 13, 18.

This refers to Jerusalem, by which the Church is meant. 'Embroidered garments' stands for truths on the level of factual knowledge. 'Covering the images, with which she committed whoredom' stands for giving strength to falsities, for 'committing whoredom' means perverting truths by bringing them into contact with falsities or with evils. Is there anyone who cannot see that since these verses describe Jerusalem 'fine linen, silk, and embroidered cloth' are not used to mean fine linen, silk, and embroidered cloth? Yet what they really mean the Christian world does not seek to know, because it supposes that heavenly and spiritual matters in the Word reside in its literal sense; the more internal contents of the Word it calls mystical, but has no interest in them.

[6] In the same prophet,

A great eagle with great wings, with long pinions, full of feathers, 2 which had embroidery ... Ezekiel 17:3.

This refers to the house of Israel, which means the spiritual Church; and this Church is called 'an eagle' by virtue of its perception of truth, 3901, 8764, 'which had embroidery' standing for its possession of factual knowledge. In David,

All glorious is the king's daughter within, in her clothing with gold interweavings; in an embroidered [robe] she will be led to the king. Psalms 45:13-14.

'The king's daughter' stands for an affection for truth, 'an embroidered [robe]' for factual knowledge of truth. In the Book of Judges,

Will they not divide the spoil, ... the spoil of colours for Sisera, the spoil of colours of embroidered work, embroiderers' colour - on the necks of the spoil? 3 Judges 5:30.

In this verse, which is part of the Song of Deborah and Barak, 'embroidered [work]' stands for factual knowledge belonging to the natural man.

6125. 'In exchange for horses' means factual knowledge supplied from the understanding. This is clear from the meaning of 'horses' as ideas forming the understanding, dealt with in 2760-2762, 3217, 5321; and since they are spoken of in connection with Egypt, which means factual knowledge, 'horses' here are factual knowledge supplied from the understanding. But what factual knowledge supplied from the understanding is must be stated. There is an understanding part and there is a will part in the human mind, and these are situated not only in his internal man but also in his external. The human understanding is developing and growing from early childhood through to manhood, and it consists in a discernment of things gained from experience and formal knowledge, also a discernment of causes from effects as well as of consequences from a chain of causes. Thus the understanding part consists in a comprehension and perception of such things as are part of everyday life, public and private. An inflowing of light from heaven brings it into existence, and for that reason everyone's understanding is capable of being made more perfect. Understanding is given to everyone in accordance with his effort to make use of what he knows, in accordance with the life he leads, and in accordance with his individual character; no one lacks it provided he is of sound mind. A person is given it to the end that he may have freedom of choice, that is, have the freedom to choose good or evil. Unless he possesses an understanding like the one just described, he has no power of his own to make that choice; thus nothing could possibly be made his own.

[2] In addition to this it should be recognized that the understanding part of a person's mind is that which receives what is spiritual, so that it is the recipient of spiritual truth and good. For no good at all, that is, no charity, nor any truth at all, that is, any faith, can be instilled into anyone if he does not have that understanding part; but they are instilled in the measure that he does have it. This also explains why a person is not regenerated by the Lord until adult life when he does possess an understanding. Till then the good of love and the truth of faith fall like seed into utterly infertile soil. But once a person has been regenerated his understanding serves the function of enabling him to see and perceive what good is and from this what truth is. For the understanding converts things belonging to the superior light of heaven into those belonging to the inferior light of the natural world, as a consequence of which the former are then seen within the latter in the same way as a person's inner affections are seen in his face when it lacks all pretence. And because the understanding serves that function, many places in the Word where the spiritual side of the Church is referred to refer also to its power of understanding, a matter which will in the Lord's Divine mercy be dealt with elsewhere.

[3] From all this one may now see what is meant by factual knowledge supplied from the understanding, namely known facts which lend support to the things a person grasps and perceives with his understanding, whether those things are bad or good. Such facts are what are meant in the Word by 'horses from Egypt', as in Isaiah,

Woe to those who go down into Egypt for help, and rely on horses and trust in chariots because they are many, and on horsemen because they are extremely strong, but do not look to the Holy One of Israel and do not seek Jehovah. For Egypt is man (homo), not God; and his horses are flesh, not spirit. Isaiah 31:1, 3.

'Horses from Egypt' stands for factual knowledge supplied from a perverted understanding.

[4] In Ezekiel,

He rebelled against him by sending his ambassadors to Egypt, that ha might give him horses and many people. Will he prosper? Will he who does this be rescued? Ezekiel 17:15.

'Horses from Egypt' again stands for factual knowledge supplied from a perverted understanding, which knowledge is resorted to in matters of faith, though there is no belief in the Word, that is, in the Lord, apart from what that knowledge provides. Thus no belief ever comes to exist, for within a perverted understanding a negative attitude reigns.

[5] The destruction which such factual knowledge underwent is represented by the drowning of Pharaoh's horses and chariots in the Sea Suph; and since that knowledge is meant by 'horses' and false matters of doctrine by 'chariots', his horses and chariots are mentioned so many times in the description of that event, see Exodus 14:17-18, 27, 26, 28. And the Song of Moses and Miriam consequently contains these words,

Pharaoh's horse went, also his chariot, also his horsemen, into the sea; but Jehovah made the waters of the sea come back over them. Sing to Jehovah, for He has highly exalted Himself; He has thrown the horse and its rider into the sea. Exodus 15:19, 21.

[6] Similar factual knowledge is also meant by the things required before-hand for a king over Israel, in Moses,

If they desire a king, from among their brothers shall a king be set over them. Only let him not multiply horses for himself nor lead the people back into Egypt in order to multiply horses. Deuteronomy 17:15-16.

'A king' represented the Lord as regards Divine Truth, 1672, 1728, 2015, 2069, 3009, 3670, 4575, 4581, 4789, 4966, 5044, 5068, thus as regards intelligence since this comes, when it is genuine, from Divine Truth. The need for intelligence to be acquired through the Word, which is Divine Truth, and not through factual knowledge taken from one's own understanding is meant by the injunction that the king should not multiply horses or lead the people back into Egypt in order to multiply horses.
