1 και εγενετο τα ορια φυλης ιουδα κατα δημους αυτων απο των οριων της ιδουμαιας απο της ερημου σιν εως καδης προς λιβα

2 και εγενηθη αυτων τα ορια απο λιβος εως μερους της θαλασσης της αλυκης απο της λοφιας της φερουσης επι λιβα

3 και διαπορευεται απεναντι της προσαναβασεως ακραβιν και εκπεριπορευεται σεννα και αναβαινει απο λιβος επι καδης βαρνη και εκπορευεται ασωρων και προσαναβαινει εις αδδαρα και περιπορευεται την κατα δυσμας καδης

4 και πορευεται επι ασεμωνα και διεκβαλει εως φαραγγος αιγυπτου και εσται αυτου η διεξοδος των οριων επι την θαλασσαν τουτο εστιν αυτων ορια απο λιβος

5 και τα ορια απο ανατολων πασα η θαλασσα η αλυκη εως του ιορδανου και τα ορια αυτων απο βορρα και απο της λοφιας της θαλασσης και απο του μερους του ιορδανου

6 επιβαινει τα ορια επι βαιθαγλα και παραπορευεται απο βορρα επι βαιθαραβα και προσαναβαινει τα ορια επι λιθον βαιων υιου ρουβην

7 και προσαναβαινει τα ορια επι το τεταρτον της φαραγγος αχωρ και καταβαινει επι γαλγαλ η εστιν απεναντι της προσβασεως αδδαμιν η εστιν κατα λιβα τη φαραγγι και διεκβαλει επι το υδωρ πηγης ηλιου και εσται αυτου η διεξοδος πηγη ρωγηλ

8 και αναβαινει τα ορια εις φαραγγα ονομ επι νωτου ιεβους απο λιβος αυτη εστιν ιερουσαλημ και διεκβαλλει τα ορια επι κορυφην ορους η εστιν κατα προσωπον φαραγγος ονομ προς θαλασσης η εστιν εκ μερους γης ραφαιν επι βορρα

9 και διεκβαλλει το οριον απο κορυφης του ορους επι πηγην υδατος ναφθω και διεκβαλλει εις το ορος εφρων και εξαξει το οριον εις βααλ αυτη εστιν πολις ιαριμ

10 και περιελευσεται οριον απο βααλ επι θαλασσαν και παρελευσεται εις ορος ασσαρες επι νωτου πολιν ιαριμ απο βορρα αυτη εστιν χασλων και καταβησεται επι πολιν ηλιου και παρελευσεται επι λιβα

11 και διεκβαλει το οριον κατα νωτου ακκαρων επι βορραν και διεκβαλει τα ορια εις σακχαρωνα και παρελευσεται ορος της βαλα και διεκβαλει επι ιαβνηλ και εσται η διεξοδος των οριων επι θαλασσαν

12 και τα ορια αυτων απο θαλασσης η θαλασσα η μεγαλη οριει ταυτα τα ορια υιων ιουδα κυκλω κατα δημους αυτων

13 και τω χαλεβ υιω ιεφοννη εδωκεν μεριδα εν μεσω υιων ιουδα δια προσταγματος του θεου και εδωκεν αυτω ιησους την πολιν αρβοκ μητροπολιν ενακ αυτη εστιν χεβρων

14 και εξωλεθρευσεν εκειθεν χαλεβ υιος ιεφοννη τους τρεις υιους ενακ τον σουσι και τον θολμι και τον αχιμα

15 και ανεβη εκειθεν χαλεβ επι τους κατοικουντας δαβιρ το δε ονομα δαβιρ ην το προτερον πολις γραμματων

16 και ειπεν χαλεβ ος εαν λαβη και εκκοψη την πολιν των γραμματων και κυριευση αυτης δωσω αυτω την αχσαν θυγατερα μου εις γυναικα

17 και ελαβεν αυτην γοθονιηλ υιος κενεζ αδελφος χαλεβ ο νεωτερος και εδωκεν αυτω την αχσαν θυγατερα αυτου αυτω γυναικα

18 και εγενετο εν τω εισπορευεσθαι αυτην και συνεβουλευσατο αυτω λεγουσα αιτησομαι τον πατερα μου αγρον και εβοησεν εκ του ονου και ειπεν αυτη χαλεβ τι εστιν σοι

19 και ειπεν αυτω δος μοι ευλογιαν οτι εις γην ναγεβ δεδωκας με δος μοι την γολαθμαιν και εδωκεν αυτη χαλεβ την γολαθμαιν την ανω και την γολαθμαιν την κατω

20 αυτη η κληρονομια φυλης υιων ιουδα

21 εγενηθησαν δε αι πολεις αυτων πολις πρωτη φυλης υιων ιουδα εφ' οριων εδωμ επι της ερημου καιβαισελεηλ και αρα και ασωρ

22 και ικαμ και ρεγμα και αρουηλ

23 και καδης και ασοριωναιν

24 και μαιναμ και βαλμαιναν και αι κωμαι αυτων

25 και αι πολεις ασερων αυτη ασωρ

26 και σην και σαλμαα και μωλαδα

27 και σερι και βαιφαλαδ

28 και χολασεωλα και βηρσαβεε και αι κωμαι αυτων και αι επαυλεις αυτων

60 καριαθβααλ αυτη η πολις ιαριμ και σωθηβα πολεις δυο και αι επαυλεις αυτων

62 και ναφλαζων και αι πολεις σαδωμ και ανκαδης πολεις επτα και αι κωμαι αυτων

63 και ο ιεβουσαιος κατωκει εν ιερουσαλημ και ουκ ηδυνασθησαν οι υιοι ιουδα απολεσαι αυτους και κατωκησαν οι ιεβουσαιοι εν ιερουσαλημ εως της ημερας εκεινης

349. Sealed out of every tribe of Israel. This symbolizes the heaven and Lord's church formed from those people.

A tribe symbolizes religion as regards goodness of life, and every tribe symbolizes the church in respect to every good of love and every truth springing from that good, which produces goodness of life. For there are two elements which form the church: the goodness of love and doctrinal truth. The marriage of these two constitutes the church. The twelve tribes of Israel represented and so symbolized the church with respect to that marriage, and each tribe represented and so symbolized some universal truth accompanying goodness or some goodness accompanying truth present in that marriage.

But what each tribe symbolized has not been revealed previously to anyone, nor could it have been revealed, lest an ill-connected exposition profane the holiness that lies within these things when joined together, since their symbolism depends on their conjunction.

[2] They have one symbolism in the order in which they are listed according to their births (Genesis 29, 30, 35:18). The order there is: Reuben, Simeon, Levi, Judah, Dan, Naphtali, Gad, Asher, Issachar, Zebulun, Joseph, Benjamin.

They have another symbolism in the order in which they are listed when they went into Egypt, namely, Reuben, Simeon, Levi, Judah, Issachar, Zebulun, Gad, Asher, Joseph, Benjamin, Dan, Naphtali (Genesis 46:8-25).

Still another symbolism in the order in which they were blessed by their father Israel, namely, Reuben, Simeon, Levi, Judah, Zebulun, Issachar, Dan, Gad, Asher, Naphtali, Joseph, Benjamin (Genesis 49).

Still another symbolism in the order in which they were blessed by Moses, namely, Reuben, Judah, Levi, Benjamin, Joseph, Ephraim, Manasseh, Zebulun, Gad, Dan, Naphtali, Asher (Deuteronomy 33) - Ephraim and Manasseh being listed there, and not Simeon or Issachar.

[3] Still another symbolism in the order in which they encamped and set out, namely, the tribes of Judah, Issachar and Zebulun on the east side, the tribes of Reuben, Simeon and Gad on the south side, the tribes of Ephraim, Manasseh and Benjamin on the west side, and the tribes of Dan, Asher and Naphtali on the north side, with the tribe of Levi in the middle (Numbers 2:1-34).

And still another symbolism in the order in which they are listed elsewhere, as in Genesis 35:23-26, Numbers 1:5-16; 7:1-89; 13:4-15; 26:5-57; 34:17-28, Deuteronomy 27:12-13, Joshua 15; 16; 17; 18; 19, Ezekiel 48:1-35.

Consequently, when Balaam saw Israel dwelling according to their tribes, he said, "How good are your tents, O Jacob, and your tabernacles, O Israel" (Numbers 24:1-4ff.).

[4] On the breastpiece of judgment, namely, the Urim and Thummim, containing twelve precious stones according to the names of the children of Israel (Exodus 28:15-21), the symbolism of the tribes in their arrangement depended on the inquiry to which they provided a response.

But what they symbolized in the order in which they are mentioned here in the book of Revelation, which is still another order, will be told in what follows.

Tribes symbolize religion, and the twelve tribes the church and everything pertaining to it, because "tribe" and "scepter" are, in Hebrew, the same word, 1 and a scepter means a kingdom, and the Lord's kingdom is heaven and the church.

1 The second lot came out for Simeon, even for the tribe of the children of Simeon according to their families. Their inheritance was in the midst of the inheritance of the children of Judah.

2 They had for their inheritance Beersheba (or Sheba), Moladah,

3 Hazar Shual, Balah, Ezem,

4 Eltolad, Bethul, Hormah,

5 Ziklag, Beth Marcaboth, Hazar Susah,

6 Beth Lebaoth, and Sharuhen; thirteen cities with their villages;

7 Ain, Rimmon, Ether, and Ashan; four cities with their villages;

8 and all the villages that were around these cities to Baalath Beer, Ramah of the South. This is the inheritance of the tribe of the children of Simeon according to their families.

9 Out of the part of the children of Judah was the inheritance of the children of Simeon; for the portion of the children of Judah was too much for them. Therefore the children of Simeon had inheritance in the midst of their inheritance.

10 The third lot came up for the children of Zebulun according to their families. The border of their inheritance was to Sarid.

11 Their border went up westward, even to Maralah, and reached to Dabbesheth. It reached to the brook that is before Jokneam.

12 It turned from Sarid eastward toward the sunrise to the border of Chisloth Tabor. It went out to Daberath, and went up to Japhia.

13 From there it passed along eastward to Gath Hepher, to Ethkazin; and it went out at Rimmon which stretches to Neah.

14 The border turned around it on the north to Hannathon; and it ended at the valley of Iphtah El;

15 Kattath, Nahalal, Shimron, Idalah, and Bethlehem: twelve cities with their villages.

16 This is the inheritance of the children of Zebulun according to their families, these cities with their villages.

17 The fourth lot came out for Issachar, even for the children of Issachar according to their families.

18 Their border was to Jezreel, Chesulloth, Shunem,

19 Hapharaim, Shion, Anaharath,

20 Rabbith, Kishion, Ebez,

21 Remeth, Engannim, En Haddah, and Beth Pazzez.

22 The border reached to Tabor, Shahazumah, and Beth Shemesh. Their border ended at the Jordan: sixteen cities with their villages.

23 This is the inheritance of the tribe of the children of Issachar according to their families, the cities with their villages.

24 The fifth lot came out for the tribe of the children of Asher according to their families.

25 Their border was Helkath, Hali, Beten, Achshaph,

26 Allammelech, Amad, Mishal. It reached to Carmel westward, and to Shihorlibnath.

27 It turned toward the sunrise to Beth Dagon, and reached to Zebulun, and to the valley of Iphtah El northward to Beth Emek and Neiel. It went out to Cabul on the left hand,

28 and Ebron, Rehob, Hammon, and Kanah, even to great Sidon.

29 The border turned to Ramah, to the fortified city of Tyre; and the border turned to Hosah. It ended at the sea by the region of Achzib;

30 Ummah also, and Aphek, and Rehob: twenty-two cities with their villages.

31 This is the inheritance of the tribe of the children of Asher according to their families, these cities with their villages.

32 The sixth lot came out for the children of Naphtali, even for the children of Naphtali according to their families.

33 Their border was from Heleph, from the oak in Zaanannim, Adaminekeb, and Jabneel, to Lakkum. It ended at the Jordan.

34 The border turned westward to Aznoth Tabor, and went out from there to Hukkok. It reached to Zebulun on the south, and reached to Asher on the west, and to Judah at the Jordan toward the sunrise.

35 The fortified cities were Ziddim, Zer, Hammath, Rakkath, Chinnereth,

36 Adamah, Ramah, Hazor,

37 Kedesh, Edrei, En Hazor,

38 Iron, Migdal El, Horem, Beth Anath, and Beth Shemesh; nineteen cities with their villages.

39 This is the inheritance of the tribe of the children of Naphtali according to their families, the cities with their villages.

40 The seventh lot came out for the tribe of the children of Dan according to their families.

41 The border of their inheritance was Zorah, Eshtaol, Irshemesh,

42 Shaalabbin, Aijalon, Ithlah,

43 Elon, Timnah, Ekron,

44 Eltekeh, Gibbethon, Baalath,

45 Jehud, Bene Berak, Gath Rimmon,

46 Me Jarkon, and Rakkon, with the border over against Joppa.

47 The border of the children of Dan went out beyond them; for the children of Dan went up and fought against Leshem, and took it, and struck it with the edge of the sword, and possessed it, and lived therein, and called Leshem, Dan, after the name of Dan their father.

48 This is the inheritance of the tribe of the children of Dan according to their families, these cities with their villages.

49 So they made an end of distributing the land for inheritance by its borders. The children of Israel gave an inheritance to Joshua the son of Nun in the midst of them.

50 According to the commandment of Yahweh, they gave him the city which he asked, even Timnathserah in the hill country of Ephraim; and he built the city, and lived there.

51 These are the inheritances, which Eleazar the priest, Joshua the son of Nun, and the heads of the fathers' houses of the tribes of the children of Israel, distributed for inheritance by lot in Shiloh before Yahweh, at the door of the Tent of Meeting. So they made an end of dividing the land.
