1 τη μωαβ ουτως ειπεν κυριος ουαι επι ναβαυ οτι ωλετο ελημφθη καριαθαιμ ησχυνθη αμαθ και ηττηθη

2 ουκ εστιν ετι ιατρεια μωαβ αγαυριαμα εν εσεβων ελογισαντο επ' αυτην κακα εκοψαμεν αυτην απο εθνους και παυσιν παυσεται οπισθεν σου βαδιειται μαχαιρα

3 οτι φωνη κεκραγοτων εξ ωρωναιμ ολεθρος και συντριμμα μεγα

4 συνετριβη μωαβ αναγγειλατε εις ζογορα

5 οτι επλησθη αλαωθ εν κλαυθμω αναβησεται κλαιων εν οδω ωρωναιμ κραυγην συντριμματος ηκουσατε

6 φευγετε και σωσατε τας ψυχας υμων και εσεσθε ωσπερ ονος αγριος εν ερημω

7 επειδη επεποιθεις εν οχυρωμασιν σου και συ συλλημφθηση και εξελευσεται χαμως εν αποικια οι ιερεις αυτου και οι αρχοντες αυτου αμα

8 και ηξει ολεθρος επι πασαν πολιν και πολις ου μη σωθη και απολειται ο αυλων και εξολεθρευθησεται η πεδινη καθως ειπεν κυριος

9 δοτε σημεια τη μωαβ οτι αφη αναφθησεται και πασαι αι πολεις αυτης εις αβατον εσονται ποθεν ενοικος αυτη

10 επικαταρατος ο ποιων τα εργα κυριου αμελως εξαιρων μαχαιραν αυτου αφ' αιματος

11 ανεπαυσατο μωαβ εκ παιδαριου και πεποιθως ην επι τη δοξη αυτου ουκ ενεχεεν εξ αγγειου εις αγγειον και εις αποικισμον ουκ ωχετο δια τουτο εστη γευμα αυτου εν αυτω και οσμη αυτου ουκ εξελιπεν

12 δια τουτο ιδου ημεραι ερχονται φησιν κυριος και αποστελω αυτω κλινοντας και κλινουσιν αυτον και τα σκευη αυτου λεπτυνουσιν και τα κερατα αυτου συγκοψουσιν

13 και καταισχυνθησεται μωαβ απο χαμως ωσπερ κατησχυνθη οικος ισραηλ απο βαιθηλ ελπιδος αυτων πεποιθοτες επ' αυτοις

14 πως ερειτε ισχυροι εσμεν και ανθρωπος ισχυων εις τα πολεμικα

15 ωλετο μωαβ πολις αυτου και εκλεκτοι νεανισκοι αυτου κατεβησαν εις σφαγην

16 εγγυς ημερα μωαβ ελθειν και πονηρια αυτου ταχεια σφοδρα

17 κινησατε αυτω παντες κυκλοθεν αυτου παντες ειδοτες ονομα αυτου ειπατε πως συνετριβη βακτηρια ευκλεης ραβδος μεγαλωματος

18 καταβηθι απο δοξης και καθισον εν υγρασια καθημενη δαιβων εκτριβητε οτι ωλετο μωαβ ανεβη εις σε λυμαινομενος οχυρωμα σου

19 εφ' οδου στηθι και επιδε καθημενη εν αροηρ και ερωτησον φευγοντα και σωζομενον και ειπον τι εγενετο

20 κατησχυνθη μωαβ οτι συνετριβη ολολυξον και κεκραξον αναγγειλον εν αρνων οτι ωλετο μωαβ

21 και κρισις ερχεται εις γην του μισωρ επι χαιλων και επι ιασσα και επι μωφαθ

22 και επι δαιβων και επι ναβαυ και επ' οικον δεβλαθαιμ

23 και επι καριαθαιμ και επ' οικον γαμωλ και επ' οικον μαων

24 και επι καριωθ και επι βοσορ και επι πασας τας πολεις μωαβ τας πορρω και τας εγγυς

25 κατεαχθη κερας μωαβ και το επιχειρον αυτου συνετριβη

26 μεθυσατε αυτον οτι επι κυριον εμεγαλυνθη και επικρουσει μωαβ εν χειρι αυτου και εσται εις γελωτα και αυτος

27 και ει μη εις γελοιασμον ην σοι ισραηλ ει εν κλοπαις σου ευρεθη οτι επολεμεις αυτον

28 κατελιπον τας πολεις και ωκησαν εν πετραις οι κατοικουντες μωαβ εγενηθησαν ως περιστεραι νοσσευουσαι εν πετραις στοματι βοθυνου

29 ηκουσα υβριν μωαβ υβρισεν λιαν υβριν αυτου και υπερηφανιαν αυτου και υψωθη η καρδια αυτου

30 εγω δε εγνων εργα αυτου ουχι το ικανον αυτου ουχ ουτως εποιησεν

31 δια τουτο επι μωαβ ολολυζετε παντοθεν βοησατε επ' ανδρας κιραδας αυχμου

32 ως κλαυθμον ιαζηρ αποκλαυσομαι σοι αμπελος σεβημα κληματα σου διηλθεν θαλασσαν ιαζηρ ηψαντο επι οπωραν σου επι τρυγηταις σου ολεθρος επεπεσεν

33 συνεψησθη χαρμοσυνη και ευφροσυνη εκ της μωαβιτιδος και οινος ην επι ληνοις σου πρωι ουκ επατησαν ουδε δειλης ουκ εποιησαν αιδαδ

34 απο κραυγης εσεβων εως ελεαλη αι πολεις αυτων εδωκαν φωνην αυτων απο ζογορ εως ωρωναιμ και αγλαθ-σαλισια οτι και το υδωρ νεβριμ εις κατακαυμα εσται

35 και απολω τον μωαβ φησιν κυριος αναβαινοντα επι βωμον και θυμιωντα θεοις αυτου

36 δια τουτο καρδια μου μωαβ ωσπερ αυλοι βομβησουσιν καρδια μου επ' ανθρωπους κιραδας ωσπερ αυλος βομβησει δια τουτο α περιεποιησατο απωλετο απο ανθρωπου

37 πασαν κεφαλην εν παντι τοπω ξυρησονται και πας πωγων ξυρηθησεται και πασαι χειρες κοψονται και επι πασης οσφυος σακκος

38 και επι παντων των δωματων μωαβ και επι πλατειαις αυτης οτι συνετριψα τον μωαβ φησιν κυριος ως αγγειον ου ουκ εστιν χρεια αυτου

39 πως κατηλλαξεν πως εστρεψεν νωτον μωαβ ησχυνθη και εγενετο μωαβ εις γελωτα και εγκοτημα πασιν τοις κυκλω αυτης

40 οτι ουτως ειπεν κυριος

41 ελημφθη ακκαριωθ και τα οχυρωματα συνελημφθη

42 και απολειται μωαβ απο οχλου οτι επι τον κυριον εμεγαλυνθη

43 παγις και φοβος και βοθυνος επι σοι καθημενος μωαβ

44 ο φευγων απο προσωπου του φοβου εμπεσειται εις τον βοθυνον και ο αναβαινων εκ του βοθυνου συλλημφθησεται εν τη παγιδι οτι επαξω ταυτα επι μωαβ εν ενιαυτω επισκεψεως αυτης

9496. 'And you shall make poles of shittim wood' means power derived from this. This is clear from the meaning of 'poles' as the power which truth from good possesses, dealt with below; and from the meaning of 'shittim wood' as the good of merit that is the Lord's alone, dealt with above in 9472, 9486. Here it must now be stated what it was that enabled the ark and the dwelling-place to represent heaven, and at the same time the rim of the ark to represent a border, the corners firmness, the rings the joining of good to truth, and the poles power. It has been shown that the whole natural system, thus every single thing existing in true order there, is representative of the Lord's kingdom, that is, of heaven and heavenly realities present there, 9280. It has also been shown that the whole of heaven resembles a human being, and that for this reason heaven has been called the Grand Man, 9276 (end). From this it now follows that all objects which serve to represent heavenly realities correlate with the human form, and that they carry spiritual meanings according to their similarity to that form.

[2] From this it is now evident how the ark can come to mean heaven where the Lord is, the rim on it to mean a border, the sides to mean good to which truth must be joined, the corners to mean firmness, the rings to mean the actual joining together, and the poles to mean power. For the poles resemble a person's arms and therefore also have a similar meaning to the arms; the rings resemble the ginglymi or sockets where the arms are linked to the breast; the corners resemble the actual protrusions where that link is made; the sides resemble the chest cavity or thorax, and the rim resembles the [shoulder-]girdle which forms a border for it. From this it becomes clear that power is meant by 'poles', as it is by 'arms' (for the meaning of 'arms' and 'hands' as power, see 878, 4931-4937, 5327, 5328, 6292, 6947, 7188, 7189, 7205, 7518, 7673, 8050, 8153, 8281, 9025, 9133); and that the same thing is meant by 'the sides' as by the chest or thorax of the body, namely good, since the chest contains the heart and lungs, and 'the heart' means celestial good and 'the lungs' spiritual good, 3883-3896, 9300. From all this it is evident that by 'rings' the same thing is meant as by ginglymi or joints which join the chest to the shoulders, and the shoulders to the arms, namely the joining of good to truth, and that firmness is meant by 'the corners', for the strength of the body is exerted there, and the body is equipped with strength and power through the arms. From all this one may recognize how it comes about that natural objects which are inanimate can represent the same realities as ones that are animate, that is, as parts of the human body. That is to say, it comes about because heaven resembles a human being, and the things present in heaven resemble those that exist in the human being, as may be seen from what has been shown at great length regarding the correspondence of the human being with the Grand Man or heaven. [3] Just as the poles which were used to carry the ark meant power, so did the poles or bars which were used to secure the gates of cities, as is clear from the following places: In Hosea,

The sword falls on its cities, and consumes its bars. Hosea 11:6.

'The sword' stands for truth battling against falsity, 'cities' for matters of doctrine, and 'bars' for power. In Isaiah,

For your sake I have sent to Babel, and I will break down all the bars. Isaiah 43:14.

In Jeremiah,

The mighty ones of Babel are seated in strongholds; their power has been destroyed. 1 Its bars have been broken. Jeremiah 51:30.

In Amos,

I will break the bar of Damascus. Amos 1:5.

In Isaiah,

I will break in pieces the gates of bronze and cut asunder the bars of iron. Isaiah 45:2.

Similar words occur in David, Psalms 107:16. In Jeremiah,

It has no gates or bars; they dwell alone. Jeremiah 49:31.

In Ezekiel,

They all dwell without a wall; 2 they do not have bars and gates. Ezekiel 38:11.

In Jeremiah,

Her gates have sunk into the earth, He has destroyed and broken in pieces her bars. Lamentations 2:9.

In David,

Praise your God, O Zion! For He strengthens the bars of your gates. Psalms 147:12-13.

In these places matters of doctrine are meant by 'cities', 2449, 2712, 3216, 4492, 4493, firmness and protection by 'gates', and the power which belongs to truth derived from good by 'bars'. The fact that all power belongs to truth, but to truth that is derived from good, see 6344, 6423, 8200, 8304, 9133, 9327, 9410.

7188. 'For with a strong hand he will send them away' means that with all their strength and power they will flee from them. This is clear from the meaning of 'a strong hand' as all the strength and power (for the meaning of 'hand' as power, see 878, 3387, 4931, 5327, 5318, 6947, 7011); and from the meaning of 'sending them away' as fleeing from them. The implications of this are that when punishments deter those belonging to hell from carrying out evil they at length refrain from molestation; they wish to leave those they have been molesting and to flee. Yet because the one and only delight of their life consists in carrying out what is evil and molesting they are unable to refrain unless they summon up all their strength and power to remove themselves. For since that which is the delight of any person's life is at the centre of his love it is at the centre of his life, and he is carried away; it is irresistible unless the unpleasantness of punishment weighs more heavily with him than the delight of carrying out evil. This is the reason for the punishments that the evil suffer in the next life.
